Honestly I find it to be a very douchey name on an adult and hearing it on a kid I think the parents were trying to find something they felt sounded cool and awesome. Then I think of top gun and internally roll my eyes.
Not sure I would describe any name as douchey, but sure. So you have met an adult with the name maverick then? Anybody else?
You probably shouldn't ask for opinions here if they are going to offend you. I'm sure you anticipated that Maverick wouldn't be too popular. This is the second post I've seen about it in as many weeks, and I'll say to you what I said to that poster...please don't. This is not a name that an adult can grow into. I can see it being "cute" on a little boy until he's 4, after that it would become less and less so until he's an adult and left questioning why he doesn't have a normal name. If anything, use it for a middle or as a nickname for something else.
Not offended at all. People really either love it or hate it I've found. Although to beg someone not to use a name is a tad extreme (unless it's like Adolf or something). I just saw that it's now in the top 200 baby boy names of 2014, so obviously more and more people are using it. Was just curious if anybody knew many Mavericks? Very unpopular on this stream obviously I appreciate the posts though!
I like the nickname Mav. When I hear the name it just sounds like a nicer sounding Frederick style name, and I like the "independent" meaning of it. But I think I'm in the minority on that one too, at least on this forum
Thank you so much for posting Zimger. I was hoping to connect with someone who has actual experience with the name. I obviously like it a lot. Have you or your son had any issues with the name?
I know of two little boys with that name. Both dad's are high school football coaches so to me it screams "I want my kid to have a cool name for when he's famous in sports one day!" But just my opinion.
I knew a guy named maverick in college. It was a nickname (his real name was unrelated -- maybe Peter?) but it was years before I found out it wasn't his given name. As an 18 year old, I did think the name was pretty cool. This guy pulled it off and he was a really nice too. But I personally wouldn't name my kid maverick, especially as a given name.

To defend the douchey comment, I can see where she's coming from. Because it seems like a jock/frat guy nickname for someone trying to be cool (so yeah kind of douchey). I couldn't imagine it as a proper name for a person. I don't know anyone with that name. If it was a good name, you would probably hear it more. If you love it, I agree with using as a middle name. If he loves it, he can use it when he's older.

Her son is an "Angel baby" and didn't grow up with the name.
I knew a Maverick once. His mother didn't like him and his father was killed in combat. He was a troubled soul but had a good heart. We met when I was on assignment doing research for the field I'm in. I didn't like him much at first, thought he was super cocky and arrogant but then he grew on me. Unfortunately his best friend died while we were dating and we almost broke up. Thank god we were able to work through those issues. I really like the name.

My little one passed. However, the boys that I know that have grown up with the name have no problems with it. It's really not that unusual where we live. No issues in school or finding work.
I went to school with a maverick. and I know a girl I went to school with also named her son maverick. I like the name quite a bit actually. I'm definitely considering it.
It makes me think of Top Gun. Haha. But the name is not all that bad. So what if people have an association? They won't once he is called that by name for a while.
