Would you call the doctor? (maybe tmi)

Hi Ladies :)

I am almost 5 weeks pregnant with my second kiddo.  I've been cramping quite a bit (mild not horrible), have low back pain, and today had a teeny tiny bit of brown discharge.  We had a tough first pregnancy, so I imagine I am just super paranoid, but wondered if anyone else has experienced this.  I know the cramping is fairly common, but the discharge seemed concerning.  Would you call your doctor or wait for your first appointment?

Thanks so much all :)

  • I think a lot of things are common in pregnancy, but if you don't feel at ease then call your doc.  They probably won't be able to do anything except run blood draws this early though.

  • I had the exact same thing last night. The spotting and cramping eased up overnight, but they had me go in today for blood work. I have to go back on Friday for a follow-up. I was high risk for my first pregnancy, so the doctor might have been quicker to do labs. Still, if nothing else, it's peace of mind! I would call.

Personally, I wouldn't call. I know my OB would tell me that those things sound normal and to only call if I begin bleeding red blood. Even then, he wouldn't allow me to come in urgently unless I was filling a pad in an hour. Brown discharge sounds better than brown/red blood and remember that brown=old. Brown discharge is quite normal during the first trimester; your body is just trying to get rid of old stuff. Try not to worry about it too much!
  • Any time someone asks this question, my answer is yes. Call your doctor. That's what they're there for. You and your doctor will be able to make the best decisions for your baby.

The symptoms you mentioned above are fairly common first tri symptoms, but if they're unusual for you, call your doctor. Everyone is different and every pregnancy is different, but if you're concerned, call your doctor.

  • If you have any concern, you should call.  They get tons of these calls, and will let you know if there is cause for concern.  You won't feel relieved until you get an answer.

  • I had the same thing a few days ago! This is my first pregnancy. I called my doctor, and she sent me in for a beta. Two days later, I had to go in for another beta to make sure my HCG levels doubled, and they did! She wants me to continue to test HCG until it reaches 3,000... but said I have nothing to worry about, my levels are doubling appropriately. Definitely call your doctor, if I hadn't, I would still be worried sick about it! :)
  • Did you call?

  • If you are having any uneasy feelings about it, I would go to the doctor just to ease the mind. However, brown = old blood. Generally nothing to worry about this early.
  • If the spotting is brown and scant, it is fairly common. I spotted from about 5 weeks to 13 weeks with my first pregnancy (dd is now almost 4 years old), and I've experienced some spotting with this one as well. They say as long as the spotting is brown and in minimal amounts it's nothing to worry about.
  • Thank you all so much for the advice.  I really appreciate it :)  It's good to know I am not alone with these symptoms.  It didn't happen during  my first pregnancy, so I wasn't expecting it.

I ended up calling my doctor's office.  They said it was pretty normal, and offered to conduct the beta test if I wanted to put my mind at ease. I had the first on Friday, and have to go in again on Monday...should have the overall results on Tuesday.  Thank you smd for suggesting :)
  • I call for everything. Always.
