Afraid baby boy's name is now too feminine

Since both of these names have been given to girls with celeb parents lately, i'm afraid our baby boy's name is going to sound too feminine. What are your thoughts on August James?

Re: Afraid baby boy's name is now too feminine

  • Ya no. August isn't feminine.

It's in the 200's for male and not even in the top 1000 for female

  • August James definitely sounds masculine to me. I would assume that's a boys name. I know people are using James for girls now, but I've only heard August as a boys' name.
  • It sounds fine to me, but if you're really worried you could make his full name Augustus or Augustine and call him August.

  • I think it's OK. I've never heard of August on a girl and its common enough on boys that most people will consider it masculine. I understand your worry though. We gave DS a name that some people consider feminine and I didn't think it bothered me because I'd always known it as a masculine name and there are so many "unisex" names now.

Then we met a little girl in our town with the same name over the weekend. She's 7 and it's a small town. Now I'm worried that everyone in town is going to consider it a feminine name because she is likely the first association they'll have with this name. And it's honestly making me question our choice, even though I didn't think it would bother me. I just feel like this is the first thought people will have when DS introduces himself in the future and I wonder what he will think about that and how many comments he'll get. I would never give my daughter a masculine name for this reason so I worry I downplayed how "feminine" this name has gotten for DS.

I would look on the SSA list and see if August is actually used for girls. Think about whether or not it would bother you to meet a girl August. If it doesnt, then go for it! It's a great name. If it does, I would keep looking.
  • I think it's a boys name. I'm a teacher and I have an August, but he goes by Auggie. LOVE that kid.

  • I would never think that August is a girl. I am wondering if you were worried about James? I wouldn't worry about James being used on females, because celebrities are an odd bunch. It may gain some steam with people who are celebrity obsessed and think it is an "amazing" trend....but not enough for me to ever think that James was a female name.

  • August is for sure all boy. James is having its moment as a ~trendy~ girl name, but I think it will probably fade out. Go for August James if you love it!

  • No it is a very masculine name. Go for it.
  • Love August. It was almost my baby boys middle name, but we went with James instead. It is not feminine at all and honestly I think it's ridiculous someone would name a little girl such a masculine name.
  • I know 3 August's and they are adorable little boys.
  • When I hear August I think boy.
