PSA: beware of tummy butter

For any ftm or those who don't have experience with stretch mark ointments ...

I currently have a terrible rash on my breasts and belly which I have found to be a result of introducing my skin to Palmer's Tummy Butter last Tuesday.
My rash started on Saturday and was very itchy and red. It has since become less itchy, but still very red and spread from the initial outburst.

When I looked it up on google, many women have had the same experience. It is very weird because the lotion worked just fine, but the tummy butter has a higher concentration of ingredients.

Save your self and avoid this product! I wouldn't wish this on anyone!

  • Oh no! I hope you get better! Have you tried taking Benedryl to help ease the symptoms?

  • Thank you for the warning!!! My friend just gave me that same product and luckily I haven't used it yet. Better safe than sorry, even if I may not get the same reaction. Not worth the additional discomfort.
I hope you feel better soon!
  • Lotion won't keep you from getting stretch marks anyhow. It's all genetics, baby. But at least it smells good and it does help with the itching at the end!
  • Thanks for the warning! Get better soon!
  • Hope you feel better soon! I second the Benedryl suggestion. Or, if you want uber-natural alternatives, rubbing the inside of a banana peel on itchy areas really cools down the itch (as long as you're not allergic to latex), and drinking warm lemon-water helps to cleanse your system. Washing with pine-tar soap or soaking in an oatmeal bath also help immensely with rashes. All are pregnancy-safe.

(We've been through this a few times in our household. DH and I both had horrible itchy rashes from poison ivy and PUPPP respectively when I was pregnant with DS).
  • Thanks everyone, yes I finally took a Benadryl after consulting with my ob. I didn't feel comfortable self diagnosing, but it is starting to go away. I will take another today and hopefully that will be the end of that!

As for the stretch marks, I was trying to prep my body because I am certainly predisposed to stretch marks. So just trying to soften the blow!

  • If you get them, they'll fade and soften considerably after you give birth. Hubby and I don't even notice mine anymore! Hope you feel better soon, girl.
  • Two things: I haven't had any issues with the Shea body butter from the body shop. You could also try buying your own pure Shea and mixing it with coconut oil. Then it is just two ingredients. You melt the coconut oil in the microwave then mix in the Shea.
  • Yikes. I hope it's better. I use Burts Bees Tummy Butter. I like it.

  • I've tried one of Palmer's other lotions without any issues. Sounds like you're just allergic to one of the ingredients.
  • I used Palmer's Tummy Butter last pregnancy and this pregnancy with no issues. It actually has great ingredients from a scientific perspective for "preventing" stretch marks (even though you can't really...but the ingredients in this product have been well studied and are among the best).  Anyway, everyone will react differently and people react to all sorts of things. Just because some people react adversely to this product doesn't mean everyone will.  I would do a patch test first if you're concerned. I am sorry this happened to you but I wanted to share my good experience.
