Gas pain in 5 week old...what worked for you?

The last few days my little one has had really bad gas. She kicks her legs and her face turns red and she will start to cry. Once she passes gas she is a happy baby. However, it seems like the gas is getting more frequent. I can usually get her to burp in the middle of feedings but at the end she doesn't burp. I have tried the baby gas drops a few times and it seems like they are hit or miss as to whether or not they work. I was going to try gripe water but was wondering if these are things I should get an okay for from her pediatrician first? Thoughts? What have you all done to help baby with gas? I read somewhere that gas production symptoms peak at 4-6 weeks then decrease...anyone experience that?

Re: Gas pain in 5 week old...what worked for you?

  • Our little guy had BAD gas at 3-4 weeks. After he hit 5 weeks, it seems like it isn't so bad. He also doesn't really burp for me. I do give gas drops and gripe water. I know the gas drops help. Try giving the gas drops before every feeding instead of after the feeding.

  • Gripe water but if you're breastfeeding it may be a reaction to what you eat and you may need to eliminate foods from your diet. Something else that seemed to help me in the past was taking a probiotic (acidophilus). I took one after every meal and I don't recall my son every having gas and burping him was super easy for me
  • Gripe water didn't work for me. We did oval drops and also probiotics.
  • We've been using bio gaia drops, you have to use them for a few days for them to work (we're on day 5 and DS seems a lot better). It says if you're want to continue after 21 days consult the doctor. I'm going to ask at my appointment on Thursday what the doctor wants me to do.
  • My son is very gassy as well. Ive found that doing tummy time helps a lot! Also laying him on his back and pushing his knees up to his chest. I am ordering the 'wind' a frida baby product to see if that will help too! But I can't say anything about it yet because I haven't tried it.
  • We are having the same issue! It's really bad and I feel horrible bc there's not much I can do for him...nothing seems to be working. Lo had his 1month today and the doctor said to start using Gerber soothe drops or any type of probiotic. Gripe water and gas drops did not work for us! Hope your lo feels better soon
  • Gripe water and Dr. Brown's bottles! Cleared up within days!
  • Gripe water and BiogGaia
  • My LO is 8 weeks and still has this issue occasionally but has gotten better with a few bad days here and there.
She started at 4-5 weeks with gas pain. Gripe water twice a day (although not convinced it works) and gas drops which I feel helped and works within 5 mins (although she continues to be gassy only passes it a bit easier with the drops)
If you are formula feeding try switching (I started on enfamil then similac sensitive and now similac organic because sensitive made it worse lol)
Also we tummy massages and bicycle her legs with every diaper change - I use coconut or almond oil and made circles around her belly button. It seems to help a little in between feeds too.
I hear it gets better by 3 months ... Here's to hoping that's true!
  • Called the advice nurse about this and she said for the gas drops to really work they have to be given with every feeding but no more than 12 times a day. My little guy eats about every 3 hours so that would be 8 times a day he gets the drops and with the consistency it has worked wonders.
