Is staying indoors bad for baby?

Winter is here! And I rarely leave the house because of the cold I don't drive so all trips means LO is in his buggy so I worry he will get cold on route to places. Is it bad that we stay Indoors sometimes nearly a week straight for baby development? When did you start going to a play group with baby? I'm worrying that keeping him indoors isn't helping him.

Re: Is staying indoors bad for baby?

  • My son is almost 4 months and I always find that when we have been out even if its just to the shops he sleeps better at night. I think it is important for their development to get different stimulus. As long as they are wrapped up warm with layers then thats fine plus the fresh air is good for baby and mum xxx

  • When it's really cold outside, I put baby in a carrier instead of the stroller. Then she gets my body heat too. I wear my husband's jacket around both of us to keep the heat in.
  • I think it's bad for me! I go stir crazy.  I have to walk my older DD to school and back every day, the baby has to come with us, so he gets at least two 30 minute round trip walks a day on the weekdays and on the weekends he usually goes to church and runs an errand with one of us. I also just wrap him in a blanket and sit on our front stop with him to kill time.

  • There is no such thing as catching a cold from the cooler temps. The germs still have to be present to get them, and they actually cultivate more readily in enclosed spaces. The only caveat with cool temps is, you immune systems weaken when your body temp decreases, but i'm guessing you aren't taking your baby out in just his diaper. Dress him to keep him warm.
My son loves going outside, no matter the weather. We actually joked that we were screwed come winter because the only way to soothe him when he wigged out was to take him outside. Just dress him accordingly and limit his exposure to extreme temps. Use a buggy cover.
