My first freak-out: insect killer

Hey!

So, I am usually not one to freak out over every little thing, but right now I'm a little worried. I'm living with my dad temporarily, and for the past couple days I've been smelling something weird in the room I'm using as an office. I finally asked my dad about it and it turns out he sprayed insect killer everywhere, so I've been inhaling it for the past 2-3 days. Yay.

Does anyone know if this is going to be a problem? Of course I'm going to ask my Dr at my appointment next week, but I thought I'd see if anyone had any insight here. I figure there's really nothing they can do anyway at this point, so I'm trying not to worry.

Ugh, and I'm so frustrated. Asked dad if he could please use his common sense and warn me in the future if he was going to do anything like this, and he basically told me nope, he's going to do whatever the hell he wants and I just need to deal with it. Couldn't even apologize. Of course, this is the same guy who let my mom labor, give birth, and bring her babies home by herself because he "had" to go to work, so I really shouldn't be surprised he gives zero effs about pregnant women. Grr....

Re: My first freak-out: insect killer

  • My understanding of the topic is that, since insect killers tend to attack the nervous system, significant exposure can increase the risk of neural tube defects while that's developing between weeks 3-8 in the first trimester. I'm not really sure what constitutes "significant" though I'd assume it would be worse if you were spraying it yourself or if it were on your skin through repeat exposures (like walking through corn stalks that had been sprayed maybe). My gut instinct is that you're probably fine, though I would personally be really pissed if I were in your position. If he's willing to share the brand of what he sprayed with you, you could call the company to ask about safety guidelines-- or ask your doctor.
