No bloodwork at 1st Appt?

Hey all,
I had my first ob/gyn appointment on Friday and was expecting them to take my blood to confirm my pregnancy and/or check my nutrients. They didn't mention it. Is this normal? Did your doctor take your blood? I guess I was expecting some sort of "confirmation" of pregnancy, but didn't get one.

Thanks :)

  • It's pretty normal. A lot of offices won't even see you before 8-10 weeks. I will be 9 weeks (on wednesday) at my first appointment and my OB will do a dating ultrasound then.

  • This is my second pregnancy but the first time at my 8 week appt they didn't do blood work at all. I had missed two periods by then, they went over family history and all that and told me what to expect, etc. seemed totally fine!
  • They gave me a urine test and a pap, blood work at 8 weeks:(

  • Glad to hear it's normal. They made me come to the first appointment before they would allow me to schedule my ultrasound. I thought the appointment was pointless. She asked if I had MS, I said no, she then proceeded to talk about MS for 10 minutes. She asked if I had questions, I said no, and that was that. Why that appointment was mandatory I have no idea..

  • I had my first appointment at 4w 5d and we did nothing but paperwork, iron check, urine, discussed if I planned to breastfeed, etc. I go back @ 8 weeks for the bloodwork, pap and ultrasound.
  • First Appt @ 6w2d- pap, urine, transvaginal ultrasound. No blood work- said they'll do that all at 10 weeks.

Basically confirmed I was pregnant- can't wait for more info at the next appointment!

  • I had my first appointment about a week ago (6 weeks) he just checked to make sure my cervix was nice and tight, had me pee in a cup and then we chatted about VBAC vs RCS options. Then scheduled my US for this week (7 weeks) and the "big appointment" for next week (8 weeks). We'll go over family history, order blood work, std check, etc. then.

  • When is your next appointment?  Are they doing bloodwork then?  If they do bloodwork in the 8-10 week mark, I would think this could be normal procedures for them.  If they aren't even doing it at your next appointment, I would find that odd...

  • I had bloodwork & an ultrasound at my appointment at 6+2. Weird...
  • yesterday was my first and I only got a urine test and pap. My ultrasound is in 2 weeks.

  • My blood work isn't until my 11/12 week appointment. First one was just pee and test for positive and give me the basic info and hospital info for where I'll deliver. They'll check for heartbeat at the next appointment too, no ultrasound until 20 weeks!

I guess it depends on your risk factors? I got a full blood panel, but my age (36), history, and implantation bleeding made my doctor consider me a threatened miscarriage.

  • I won't have my first appt until 12 weeks.
  • Thank goodness for this thread.  I had my first appointment two weeks ago and they took blood and urine.  Confirmed pregnancy, but the blood was only basic bloodwork to confirm no STD's present, white blood cell count and my TSH.  I have Hashimoto Thyroiditis and despite being on synthroid had still jumped to 4.15, super worried about that part.  Anyway, I thought it was really odd they didn't check progesterone or hcg levels as part of the blood work.  Transvaginal u/s tomorrow to verify heartbeat then next appointment at 10 weeks.  FTM here so all of this is a bit confusing and it's nice to see people with similar situations so I don't feel totally crazy.
  • Huh. The variation is interesting. I had my first appt today at 6w3d and I had blood work and peed in a cup after talking to the doc. No pap, no U/S.

It's on Monday. I need to call and ask what their procedures are. She mentioned that we would do an ultrasound and talk about my diet, but didn't say anything about blood work. I actually barely tolerate my blood being taken, so I didn't bring it up... But I really should have.

  • @samsonator I hate having my blood taken too...maybe by the end of this pregnancy thing we will be pros! I hope your doctor sheds some light on their procedures. I'm also trying to decide what I need to ask and what they will tell me on their own.
  • Hmmmm. Interesting.... I use a naturopathic doctor but she does use and prescribe regular medications. She also performs a good amount of testing to check your health. When I got my positive I came in a week or so later and got my blood draw and we went over the results. She checked hcg levels as well as vitamin levels to make sure I wasn't deficient or over dosing on the prenatals/iron/vitamin d. She currently has me on progesterone because mine is naturally low.
  • Last pregnancy, I had blood work and Doppler at first appointment. This one, weight, pee in a cup, and bp. Ultrasound scheduled for 8 weeks and blood work scheduled for the week after. I guess every dr does it a little differently.
