I REALLY WANT A CIGARETTE

Re: I REALLY WANT A CIGARETTE

  • I quit smoking 20 years ago (after just a few years as a teen heavy-smoker).  I still crave it.

A few years back, I tried smoking "just one."  It knocked me to my knees with pleasure, and then it was all I could think about for a week.  I didn't give in, but it was close.  There really is no such thing as just one.

But you've made it through the first few days, the hardest part!!!!  Hooray for you!!!  You don't want to deal with that withdrawal again, so stay far, far away from that "just one cigarette."  It puts you back to square one, and you start over all over again.

Put other things in your mouth-- mints, candy, gum.  If you have free time, make your hands busy.  I did cross stitch.  Once you're a couple weeks out, and you can start to smell things again (really, smoking kills your sense of smell), go take a deep sniff of an old ashtray.  Realize that everything you own smells like that, and everyone you know thinks that you smell like that too.  Deep clean everything (baking soda is helpful).  Distance yourself from people who still smoke.

And don't listen to anyone who thinks this is easy.  It is incredibly hard.  And you should be so, so incredibly proud of yourself for every day you make it.

Seriously, I've done a lot of good things in my life, a lot of smart things.  The BEST choice I ever made was to quit smoking.  Hands down.
