I started using my Bumgenius 4.0 pocket diapers and I love them! I've been reading up on care and came across something that I wanted to ask you CD experts about. I read that I can reuse the covers if they aren't wet or soiled. I assumed I'd have to wash the covers after each use and not sure how they don't get wet or soiled, but I'm on diaper #2 so I have minimal experience. Thoughts?
I have kawaii pocket diapers and honestly I have never not had to wash it after use.
I do have a few prefolds.that I use on laundry days and that cover I have been able to wash and use for a second time.
Covers for prefolds can be reused, I don't think pockets can be. I use thirsties and prefolds and reuse the covers unless they get soiled.
Ok thanks ladies! I was really confused how id be able to use the covers without washing so this makes sense!

I'm a first timer using pockets too, mostly bumgenius, but I have a big mix. @Ceridwen77 what more experienced moms have told me is that when they get tired of washing pocket diapers every time you change lo, is that you can use fleece or disposable liners, leave the absorbent part outside the pocket and use the liner in between the microfiber and their skin, then when you change then you just change the absorbent part and the liner and reuse the cover. I haven't tried this yet, just a suggestion, but I'd love to hear others weigh in on it.
How often do you all find you are changing your babies? I am using flips with the stay-dry inserts, and I feel like I am changing more often than with the disposables.

I feel like we're changing her all the time! I think we go through 10-12 diapers a day. We use pocket diapers with micro fiber inserts. However the first month when she didn't fit cloth we had to change her a lot also, it just seems like she HATES feeling any kind of moisture.
We check her every couple of hours (with the exception of her long stretch of sleep at night) and she is almost always dirty/wet when we check. I recently pulled the Lil Joeys from our stash and added our OS diapers and do laundry about every other day with approximately 22 diapers.
I guess our little man doesn't mind being wet/dirty and isn't a heavy wetter. We can go 3-4 hours before he needs a change. Usually I change him more like every 2-3 hours just for my own peace of mind but it he goes longer it doesn't bother him. I think we go through 6-8 diapers a day. We have 25, so I do laundry about every other day so we have enough dry diapers.
I'm pretty sure he pees more like 2+ times before I get to changing his diaper (mostly because the only way I know for sure if he's wet is by sticking my finger in his diaper)... Do I need to change him more often? Like I said, being wet doesn't seem to really bother him and the diaper can hold it...
Our LO doesn't seem to be bothered by wet diapers, either, which is why we check her frequently. Having their bum sitting in that wetness for extended periods can cause a host of problems, like rashes and possibly even ammonia burns. Eight seems like a pretty low number for one day for a baby this age.
Okay thanks. That's what I was thinking but wasn't sure. Do you have any tips for checking to see if they're wet? I miss that yellow line the disposables have lol
Thanks guys. Just making sure I was doing it right. Jane never complains about diapers, so I want to know I'm not over or under doing it. I've been changing every 2-2.5 hours during the day.
@rachswi I found this. Most of the article is saying peek or feel inside, but there is a section that describes what different fabric types feel like wet vs dry if you want to try mastering the squishing and poking the outside of the diaper method.
We just open her diaper up every couple of hours, and usually it needs to be changed. Some people say cloth diapers feel hard after they're wet, if that helps.
My thing is we have officially graduated from our newborn stash and are trying to trouble shoot her regular pockets; We've been having quite a few blowouts. Unfortunately we have a modge podge of brands- Bumkins, Ecoable Happy Endings, Bum genius and a ton of Alva babies with a few more oddities ( I just collected on the cheap throughout my pregnancy). This is biting me in the ass some now because not all of these keep to the same snap setting. Are you guys doing multiple inserts? I have both charcoal and microfiber (a few bamboo as well), do you guys have a preference?

We we also have a ton of different kinds, same story, bought on Craigslist as they were available. We've really only had a few blow outs and our girl is small so all the diapers are still on their smallest settings and I make sure they are snug around her legs (easier said than done since she has little chicken legs). We have only microfiber inserts and they have worked great, even with just one in each pocket. When you say they don't keep to the same snap settings, you mean each of the brands are different, or they are coming unsnapped? I don't unsnap mine when we wash them so they are always on the right "setting"
@bellie1223 trying to figure out what works and remember what that setting is for that brand has been is what I'm finding challenging. Solid point though, until we get fully in the swing of things I might try to leave one side snapped when I wash. The blowouts particularly happen for us on the overnight stretch- A lot of trial and error for us.
@Lolo427 yeah you know she has only recently (like in the last week) started sleeping longer than 3 hour stretches so that may be part of the reason we haven't had issues. I've heard that bamboo inserts are best for nighttime but don't know from experience.
Sorry if this has been discussed, I did a quick search and didn't get anything...I want to start using CD's as the main diaper but we live in an apartment without laundry facilities which makes it unrealistic as we don't want to go to the laundromat every other day ao we want to get a small portable washer for our apartment, I've been looking online for them but wanted to see if anyone on here had experience with them and had any recommendations? Thanks!
I wanted to post in case anyone else out there is struggling with diaper rash. I think I solved my problem.
Come to find out my LO had a yeast diaper rash. It was never completely healing because I wasn't treating it with the right medication. I started her on lotrimin cream and within 1 application there was marked improvement, and now after 2 days it's essentially gone.
I also learned that yeast lives through wash cycles in cloth diapers and I was probably infecting her again each time I put her back in cloth. A simple wash with bleach should take care if any yeast living on her diapers. Fingers crossed that I've figured this out and can happily go back to cloth once she's rash free for 48hrs.

Let us know how that goes. Hope it works out. Haven't dealt with that yet thankfully, but doesn't mean I won't!

We had this issue with my older daughter when she was tiny-- make sure you bleach everything her little bottom has been on! (Baby bath tub, blankets she was on for a chance to air out her bottom, etc. ) We also did a double rinse cycle of the diapers after beaching them to be sure the bleach was totally rinsed off before they were on her. Hope it works as well for you as it did for us!!

Oh I didn't think of bleaching the tub or her changing pad covers! I will definitely do that. Thanks.

We use bamboo one size pocket diapers and still haven't had any leaks to date. We change diapers evert time we feed
