Cloth Diaper Check-In

Re: Cloth Diaper Check-In

  • In the beginning we plan to just use disposable wipes because from various showers, I've been given probably 1,500 wipes. We'll see once those run out

Good to know that cloth wipes aren't always magically anti-diaper-rash. @oxley09 I looked up the Grovia wipes. They LOOK soft! I read somewhere to use 100% cotton and these are mostly polyester. Anybody know why or whether this is important?

Maybe because cotton is thought to be more absorbent? I really don't know, because I've seen people recommend hemp, bamboo, polyester, cotton, terry cloth and just about everything except tulle. ;) These wipes are thick, just the right size for a wipe container, soft, and had really good reviews on Amazon. I don't have any experience with them just yet, but they seemed like a good shot! And it is really interesting how baby butts can be so different when it comes to rashes! Our last child would break out from her diapers and coconut oil was the only thing that helped. This time I have coconut oil and a tube of Honest Company Healing Balm ready to go!

@urby87 EBF and CD two kiddos and until you start solids it really does just dissolve! You can rinse a bit if you prefer though ;)
  • We just have designated wash cloths as wipes for DD and an all natural bum spray. You wet the wash cloth with warm water and spritz the bum with the spray once and give it a wipe. If she has a poop we use regular disposable wipes. DD has extremely sensitive skin and very prone to diaper rash that this seems to work the best with us.

I have bumgenius cloth wipes and spray solution which I'll use for DD if she has a poop diaper and then just water (maybe coconut oil mixed in too -not sure yet) if she's just wet. We have babyganics diaper cream but I want to check out Earth Angel as well.

Edit: cut off for some reason

For some reason earth mama angel baby rash cream gave my daughter a rash. As did coconut oil!

Bummer!  I always hear such good things about EMAB...
I know! And I loved the nipple cream for myself. But it made her butt worse!

I also learned not to wipe for pee unless she was really soaked. Added more moisture isn't good and urine is sterile anyway.

One thing that sort of goes along the lines of not wiping for a lightly-peed-in diaper is whether or not to spray poopy ones if LO is exclusively breastfed...  I've heard/read this is fine because EBF poop is water soluble, but the idea of putting poop straight into my washing machine where all of my other clothes get washed kind of squicks me out.  Any ST+ CD mamas who also EBF and have experience on this front?

It really does dissolve and you don't need to worry about it if you're EBF. You can rinse if you want. But it's pretty much just colored liquid anyway.
  • I am using mostly prefolds. I hand knit wool diaper covers and just need to Lanolize them. All the prep washing is done. I also bought two all in one overnights and some pocket diapers with bamboo inserts from Kawaii.
  • We're planning on starting out with sposies, but I really want to switch to cloth once we're out of the newborn stage. I LOVED them when the little one I babysat last year was switched to them while I was watching her. They weren't what I was expecting at all - and the poor girl had such sensitive skin that her issues were cleared up within two weeks of the switch.

Question for STM's on the go - do you just keep a wetbag in your diaper bag when on short daytrips? How many inserts do you typically keep on you for your peace of mind? I know that the second part is probably easier once you know your kids pattern, but I can see myself being that person that has like 6 with me for a quick trip to the mall!
  • Another question. What diaper cream do you use? I know I can use pretty much any cream if I use a paper liner, too, but are there any creams that I don't need to worry about a paper liner as well? (Preferably that isn't too terribly expensive)

    @rachswi I use CJs Butter!
  • @urby87 we rinsed cloth diapers in our utility sink up until starting solids. I just didn't quite feel comfortable with throwing poop in the wash even though it rinses out easily.

I had 2 small wet bags I kept in the diaper bag.
I usually had 2-3 pre folds with me and would always have a disposable or 2. I also kept a bag in the car with some and an extra change of clothes I case I got low.
  • Have any of you ladies attempted making your own cd? I watched a few videos and tutorials last night and it seems fairly simple and very cost effective.
I'm by no means a great seamstress but I'm getting better and might give a few of the simpler designs a try.
    Any experience?

I'm a seamstress and a quilter, and I have NO interest in sewing cloth diapers!  Most of the time when I make something it's for one of several reasons - either I can make it better for cheaper (think mass produced in China kind of thing), I want something custom or in a particular color/style/pattern, or because I simply enjoy it.  Cloth diapers doesn't fall into any of those categories for me personally.  ;) Why fix what's not broken?

I will say that there are a ton of cute patterns and tutorials out there, and if it strikes your fancy go ahead and give it a shot and then let us know how it goes!

Yes, definitely plan on carry a wet bag or two!  I'm planning on packing 2 covers and 2-4 inserts depending on how long we'll be out (we're using Best Bottoms).  It definitely depends on your baby and the length of the trip.  And like a previous poster - I would so strongly recommend keeping some diapers (cloth or disposable) with a set of clothes i your car for emergencies.  I can't tell you how many times we had more than one explosion of either spit up or poo and were away from home.  No one wants to have to rush to the nearest Target with a naked crying baby.  BEEN THERE.

You are quite the seamstress! Your work is beautiful :)
I've found some simple patterns that would put the cost of each diaper at maybe a couple bucks. I found a bunch of flannel at a thrift store in great shape and would use that, otherwise I just need elastic and would probably use terry cloth as a soaker.
So I might give it a shot! I'll let you know if I do :)
  • You're so sweet @MercyC1130!  Yes, please let me know how it goes!  A couple bucks for a diaper is WAY better than what we're paying for new Best Bottoms - nearly $17 for each one!  If I thought I could do a better job or improve on it somehow, I might try it, but right now that sounds like a lot of work.  ;)
  • @itstheblackwidowbaby I have 2 large wet bags for home and 2 smaller ones for our diaper bag on the go. I always pack for a diaper change every 2 hours plus one extra incase of a poop in between changes, for when we are out and about. DD is almost 2 and I think I packed more when she was smaller. I usually have disposable wipes and some wash cloths with the bum spray also and at least one extra outfit.
  • So I've been doing a mix of CDing and using up the NB disposables we have left. Little girl is under 6 pounds still and I thought it would be difficult to use cloth on her at this size but it hasn't been too bad actually!
I've been using some tots bots bamboozles (amazing at this stage) a few WAHM brand fitteds, WAHM pockets, and my AppleCheeks size 1's.

It's been great so far. I've got like 10 ish disposables left at the moment and won't buy anymore.

    YCSWU
  • We're using bumgenius free time and all eco AIOs. So cute! We found flushable liners that my sister recommended so we don't have the sprayer. If we need to, we'll use honest company or babyganics for disposables at first.
  • I looked up reviews and their website, but wanted to see if you ladies had any experience with this brand; Alva baby?
They are incredibly inexpensive, with mixed reviews though most seem good. I found some on Craigslist, 12 diapers and inserts for 90$. They are "like new", washed and prepped but apparently never worn. At that price they could at least be back up diapers I'm thinking...
Any of you ladies experience with these?
  • Anyone planning to use a cloth diaper service ? My neighbor told me that is what she is using and she loves it.
They bring clean ones, pick up the dirty ones... She did not remember the price though (really?)

From what I understand, most cloth diaper services end up costing about the same as disposable diapers...
  • Oh sure, I looked at the TinyTots pricing and it is like 1000$ for the year (20$ the week) I am not thinking about pricing, only about the LO. That's why I am wondering, since I was planning to use disposable. If I can pay the same price for something better for her, that makes sense.

We did for the first 10 months with my daughter. It was $100 a month. We liked it but felt like we could do it ourselves. They only provided white covers they we had to rent to so bought our own. Then we spent about $150 and bought our own prefolds.
Sure washing is time consuming some days but it's not bad.
It was nice to just put the dirty ones outside and it's a great alternative to disposables. Now that we own all the covers and prefolds it's easier to wash them ourselves though.

Oh okay. Wasn't sure if you were already on the CD train or if you were thinking of hopping on. I've heard good things about CD services (we aren't using one because we can't justify the cost), but I know cloth diapers tend to have fewer blowouts and is a greener option. But they aren't quite as absorbent as disposable so you may have to change them more often (not that it matters if you're getting the diapers delivered to you anyway). Honestly, the idea of having diapers delivered to you sounds nice because it's one less thing to think about/coupon to clip/errand to run, etc.
  • Thanks for the replies !
We have some disposable for the beginning, so we will see how it goes and maybe switch to that service when she changes size or we run out, and I will talk about it with my mom when she is here (I already sent her a few links) she was kind of telling me it was a huge undertaking laundry wise and if we could afford disposable she would not recommend trying CD, so will see what she says of that. I did not know it existed until yesterday lol

Your mom may not realize what cloth diapers are now either. I know a lot of people still have the rectangular prefolds in mind when they think of cloth diapers rather than the nice fitted diapers they are now. There's no way we would do cloth diapers if they weren't the fitted, well-shaped thing they are now. I wouldn't want to mess with safety pins and such.

cloth diapers have come a long way since your mom was using them! I am on my 3rd (due any day) and I have cloth diapered both of my kiddos no I plan to cloth diaper this one! Prefolds especially are SO easy to wash! I do diaper laundry every 3 days and then I forget about it! I have used pocket diapers, all in ones, etc and in my mind prefolds and covers are absolutely the easiest!!
  • They have come a long way since your mom used them! We are bad and usually did laundry every 4 days and once she got a little bigger, sometimes 5. 3 is usually recommend. It was a number of washes per load of diapers so that's easy to use turn the washer back on with the same load in it to lee rincing them.

But yeah a service is a very good option if you still want the benefits with out the work.

    Oookay,so!
I think my stash, for now, is complete! I'm super dork excited and want to share, but also want experienced opinions! I am completely new to this and had to build my stash on a tiiight budget, but how do you think this sounds? Do you think this will be a good start or do you recommend any other diapers, brands, or styles?

I purchased all One-Size. How did one size work out for any of you? I'm afraid of fitting issues..
If baby doesn't fit in them at first though, I have disposables for now...

They are all pockets and AIOs. Does anyone really prefer the prefolds/covers to these, to the point where they highly recommend throwing some in the mix?
    6 Bumgenius.
    1 Cutey baby
    3 Thirsties
    1 Rumparooz
    1 Charlie Banana
    10 Coolababy
13 what I think are Alva
    43 assorted inserts

I somehow forgot to look up reviews on the Coolababy, and bought them off craigslist new.
I think I had them confused with the cutey baby and thought I was getting a great deal. I did get a good deal price wise, but they apparently aren't that awesome of a diaper. I hope they work out for me... any of you experience with them?

At the least they can be at-home back up diapers if worse comes to worse? Or should I try and throw some of them on craigslist again and settle for less quantity, more quality?.. Even without those though, I think it's a pretty good size stash.. I just think it's more realistic for me that I might sometimes need three days for laundry!

I know it's kind of a hodge podge assortment I have, but I would just read reviews as I saw them on sale and snag them if I like what I read!

I also made two wet bags. I used old vinyl table cloth as the inside liner, and sturdy, but easy to wash/dry fabric as outside. I'll probably make another though because one was accidentally to small and it will probably just stay in my car.

Thanks in advance for any insight! :)

We're doing a diaper service because we live in an apartment with shared coin laundry, and washing cloth would not be reasonable for us. My mom is the opposite of yours, she loved cloth diapering me and offered to help pay for the service as a shower gift! Our local service is prefolds and covers, and costs about what you were quoted. I'm really excited to try it! We have a small pack of newborn disposables for the first few days, but we'll probably do both assuming the XS size thirsties covers fit. I love that it's less wasteful and hopefully will be kinder to baby's skin.

Eventually when we get a house (hopefully in the spring) I'll probably switch to all-in-ones and wash them myself, assuming we like the first 6 months of CD.

@MercyC1130 - As far as the number of diapers, that looks good, and having a variety of different kinds is always a good idea because what works for one baby/family may not work for another.  I will say, though, that you may want to reconsider having only OS diapers in your stash.  I can tell a pretty big difference between the sizing on a OS and a NB diaper (see photo below).  There is no way our LO will fit into a OS diaper any time soon; right now she's too small even for NBs (we've had to buy preemie sposies to get through the first couple of weeks).  NB diapers usually also have a fit feature that keeps them from rubbing the umbilical stump, which is certainly not a necessity, but it's nice.  They may not be in the NBs very long, but unless you have a pretty big baby, you'll probably be glad you had them in the long run.

Ooh yeah, big size difference. The umbilical cord room too is a nice add on too.. I think I'll definitely keep my eye out but we did get a bunch of nb disposables in case baby gets here before. Since I pointed out to SO that we'll be able to save them for the next kid, lol, he's a little more excited and a decent little collection of them?
  • This thread is awesome!

We are moving into a new house in mid-December and I'm now considering cloth. (It would NOT have worked at my current house - the washer/dryer situation is a disaster, they are tiny Euro units and it takes like 2 hours just to dry a small load of normal cotton t-shirts.) The woman who lives in the house now was showing me her cloth dipes and explaining all the various kinds, and it was a little overwhelming but also really helpful to see it in person.

I think I would definitely hold off until after the newborn phase. For people who have done this or have done more research, what are the biggest pros for the prefold kind versus the all-in-one and/or pocket kinds? For people who use all-in-one, did you actually use all the buttons to make them smaller, etc? It seemed like that would make them bulky and/or cause leakage, but of course I haven't tried them.

I'm considering buying some of her used "equipment" and she seemed to favor the AIO and pockets, but I'm curious about the advantages of pre-folds.

I prefer my prefolds just because they have a trimmer fit than my pocket diapers. The other great thing about prefolds and covers is that they're fairly cheap compared to AIOs and pockets and you can reuse covers so you don't have to have as many. My son is 4 weeks old and we just switched over to cloth. His covers fit perfectly but his pocket diapers are still way too bulky to use. YouTube is a great resource for seeing different fits and styles.
  • So we were talking about this in the newborn diapers thread and I thought I'd resurrect the CD thread.

Zeke is probably big enough for his cloth diapers now (not sure exactly how big he is but I'm pretty sure he's over 8 lbs now and that's the starting weight for my bumgenius AIO)... The problem is he has some issues with his umbilical cord. It came off slowly leaving a red mark and dr Google indicated he had an umbilical granuloma. We go tomorrow to the real doctor to find out what we can do. Anyone know if we can still use cloth diapers if the umbilical cord isn't completely healed? Or do we just need to keep waiting?
  • I think somewhere on this thread this was touched on, but I might have it mixed up with somewhere else I was reading.
No experience, but from what I was told was that unless it's a NB size cloth diaper, they can be irritating on their cord spot. It probably depends on your baby though and how their body is and how the diaper fits them.

  • I started using my Bumgenius 4.0 pocket diapers and I love them! I've been reading up on care and came across something that I wanted to ask you CD experts about. I read that I can reuse the covers if they aren't wet or soiled. I assumed I'd have to wash the covers after each use and not sure how they don't get wet or soiled, but I'm on diaper #2 so I have minimal experience. Thoughts?

I have kawaii pocket diapers and honestly I have never not had to wash it after use.

I do have a few prefolds.that I use on laundry days and that cover I have been able to wash and use for a second time.

Covers for prefolds can be reused, I don't think pockets can be. I use thirsties and prefolds and reuse the covers unless they get soiled.
