How would you spell it?

Hubby and I CANNOT agree on how to spell Kiera/Keira.

He says it should be Keira because of Keira Knightly, I say it's Kiera... which follows the basic rules of English grammar.

We both agree that "unique spelling" is not for us... we just can't agree on which Kiera/Keira is correct.

What is your opinion?

Kiera. The ei version is technically a misspelling.

Definitely ie-- otherwise she will go her whole life have to correct people when they spell it wrong.

Thank you for the input ladies. I've shown him this post, but he still thinks it should be "ei". We'll see in the end, but I'm going with "ie" lol.

I think it depends on the pronunciation. Do you want key-ER-a or KEY-ra? I think the first one should definitely be Kiera and the second one would be Keira (or Kira really).

ETA Keira Knightley pronounces it KEY-ra which I think should be Kira for simplicity sake.

Keira knightly has said her name is misspelled and her mom just didn't know how to spell it correctly so there's that to tell your husband

So not to complicate your life more but I believe Ciara is the Gaelic spelling. Kira is my personal fav though and Kira was one of our top 3.

If you're still set on the ie vs ei, go with the Kiera as I think the other girls know what they're talking about there

I would say it depends on how you want people to pronounce it.  Kiera looks like kee-AIR-a to me, and Keira looks like KAY-ra.  Neither one of them look like KEE-ra to me (that would be Kira).

English spelling rules don't seem to apply for a lot of names (eg Keith, Sheila). That being said, Kiera seems to be the most common spelling.

There are actually more exceptions to the 'i before e' rule than adherents.

They have actually stopped teaching the rule in UK schools as the Oxford English Dictionary actually has 923 words that have cie (against the rule) compared to 900 words that than cei (following the rule).
