Hey ladies so I'm thinking of dying my hair tomorrow & I was wondering if it's safe I'm 17 weeks along
I asked 2 doctors one said its totally fine after 12 weeks the other one said she wouldn't recommend it till after pregnacy

If two doctors told you it was totally fine I would go with that. You should trust your doctor over people on an internet forum...

ETA: I just reread your post, I see one doctor said it was fine and the other didn't. Are they both OBs? Both my doctors said it was fine and I think that is generally what most say now.

FWIW, most people think it's generally safe throughout pregnancy to color your hair. There are very little chemicals that would be absorbed by you through that process and it would be very unlikely that any chemicals would get to the fetus.
  • Here is a thread discussing that topic

my old doctor said absolutely not, but she also didn't want me to use a tiny dot of zit cream that had salicylic acid in it, and i did that anyhow. if you had a doctor tell you that it was safer tp wait until after pregnancy, and you are still looking around for a random person on the internet to tell you that it will be fine, then just go ahead and do it. i'm of the mindset that it is *probably* okay, but even though i eat raw sushi and occasionally use my zit cream, this is one of those things i just would err on the safe side about. we all have our different "things" we aren't comfy with, and chemicals that will be sitting on my head for longer than 30 seconds while i breathe those stinky fumes is mine - i wouldn't do it, which is why my perm looks like shit right now

  • My doctor didn't recommend dyeing until after first trimester. I know other women have dyed their hair and no problem and a hairdresser to that worked and dyed her hair while pregnant. Me I'm just avoiding it. Never can be too safe is the way I look at it.
  • Hi. Fyi you should learn how to use the search function. If one doc said yes and one said no, just make up your mind which one you feel comfortable following. I dyed my hair at like 12 weeks but it was ombré so it was only the ends of my hair.

  • I waited til second tri -- just got highlights instead, then the dye doesn't touch your scalp! Or you could do semi-permanent / ammonia free if you're worried.
  • i dyed my hair in first tri (should have waited til second tri, but i didnt know) & everything was fine. i was told dying is okay in the second tri, but you shouldn't bleach your hair at all during pregnancy.
  • I didn't know I was pregnant until literally one week after bleaching my hair (blonde and have to kill the roots). I was almost out of the first trimester. I recently got my hair done again and noticed it tingles my scalp a little bit more than usual and my hair took the bleach much quicker, but I was safe about it. Dye in open air spaces with ventilation and you'll be fine.
  • I died my hair yesterday with ammonia - free dye. I feel good, but it came out darker than expected.

Ive dyed mine three times now
  • My sister died her hair several times during her pregnancy. I dont touch my hair at all. To everyone their own personal choice. I did some research and dye is unsafe if it is absorbed through your skin. If you decide to do it be very careful and in a well ventilated area. I personally don't even trim my hair during pregnancy. But then again that is my personal choice after doing research. :-B

Do you mind sharing your research that compelled you to not get your hair trimmed during pregnancy. Maybe you read something that I didn't but that I should be aware of. Thanks!

I'm not seeing where not trimming your hair is even logical. I mean, if you're wanting it to grow ok but not trimming because of it affecting the baby? That's not really adding up to me. :-/

Agreed... If anything I'm more compelled to get my hair cut right now because a) I find it so relaxing (mainly the hair washing bit) and b) I'll be hard pressed to find the time when the baby is here (took me forever to get a trim after DD was born... By that time it was a full on cut!).

  • The main concern here is hair dying. Hair dyeing and hair length are two separate research papers.

For the hair length trimming is just a side note. The research was compiled in a different language, just mainly talking about different cultural backgrounds. No there is nothing harmful to the baby about it. It's just a preference in hair length. And at the salon they did tell me that pregnancy has an effect on your hair and offered to do a deep hair treatment after the pregnancy.

I used that side note to paint a picture of how extreme "I don't touch my hair". Sorry if it confused some of you.
  • It's another one of those decisions you have to make on your own. There is no black and white answer. I didnt dye with my first two but I have gone crazy gray since then and I have really dark almost black hair so there wasn't an option that would just let me go natural without it looking awful. I did find a salon that uses less harmful chemicals from a special line but it still smells so I'm sure it's not perfect.
