Rice Cereal/ Solids question

I know there are a few discussions about solids but I couldn't quite find the answer I was looking for so I apologize for another thread!

My LO is a little over 4 months and the doctor wants us to start solids- starting with rice cereal.  Exactly how much rice cereal do I need to mix with her formula and how many times should she be getting the rice cereal each day?  Any advice is helpful and appreciated, thanks so much!

I bought an oat cereal for my LO and it has instructions on the back similar to what his doc told me. It says something like mix 1tbsp cereal with 3tbsp breast milk/formula so it has a runny consistency. My doc said to start it only once per day for a week (in the morning so if he reacts poorly to it with a tummy ache or whatever) that he won't have trouble going to sleep that night. Honestly, my LO is so not into solid foods yet though that I haven't bothered implementing this. I've tried once or twice every weekend since we got cleared to try it but it's a no go so far.
  • There's been a lot of talk about the levels or arsenic in rice lately. Our pedi said to do oatmeal cereal instead. We bought beech nut brand cause it said it was GMO free. It said to start with a tablespoon and mix to a desired thickness with formula or breast milk. I think to start the consistency of applesauce is pretty good. We did this for like a week but it tasted horrible and my son hated it so we just started mixing the cereal with either applesauce (no sugar) squash or sweet potato. That's all we've tried so far and I make the purées myself. He loves sweet potato the best!
    Hope this helps!

  • I got the rice cereal and the first few day I did what the instructions on the box said ( like 1tbls of cereal per 3tbls of formula) but after a few days a just kinda put it in without measuring. I make it kinda soupy and microwave it for about 5 seconds. It almost makes it jelly like. I give it to her at around 8 or 9 ( feeding right before bed) now I started w vegetables for lunch. Around 11am I give her 4oz of formula and after she eats that I give her a first stage baby food.
  • For the first feeding start with 1TBSP cereal and mix it with formula. BM to the consistency you like. We started at once a day the first week, then added in our first food (applesauce) and now we are up to 2x a day with cereal and our food of the week at each feeding. But my son is big, so he is hungry!
