Heart Palpitations

Im 15 1/2 weeks. Ive been having some chest pain and random heart palpitations. I had my vitals taken at work yesterday during an "episode" and my bp was 100/64 but my pulse was 138bpm. I feel dizzy when it happens and out of breath. Anyone else experience this? I was told to go to the ER by the obgyn nursing line but by the time i get there everything is fine. Anyone else experiencing stuff like this?

Re: Heart Palpitations

  • Yes I get these all the time. At my last appointment I told my doctor about them and she said it can happen with the increase of blood in our system. She said if it becomes bothersome that she will refer me to a cardiologist for meds to help them. She did say if I had actual chest pains and difficult breathing to go to the we immediately

  • Yes, Im glad i'm not the only one. I told my OBGYN and she sent me to my PCP for an EKG which was abnormal so they sent me to the ED and just like with you everything was fine when I got there so they didnt do anything. Now my OB is sending me to more specialists and for more testing, still don't know the problem though and it keeps happening for seemingly no reason.
  • I had these with my last pregnancy. I had to wear a heart monitor for 24 hours and also get an ultrasound of my heart and EKG. It's very normal and has to do with hormones and increased blood flow, but my doc wanted to rule out any possible heart problems before labor to be on the safe side. If you have pain associated with them, go to the ER.
  • I had the same thing. I was feeling it several times a day. I asked my doctor and she said my heart rate during these episodes was still in normal range and I should be okay. They went a way after a while, I don't get them at all anymore and I'm 19 weeks.
  • This happens to me due to panic attacks and severe anxiety. And it usually leads to me losing my breath, almost passing out and losing my vision and hearing for 15-30 mins in the event of a panic attack. The last time it happened my pulse was 156. The palpitations are a daily occurance that I am slowly learning to deal with. Learning how to calm myself down and focus was the only way. Sometimes even a shower where I have to shave, sitting and thinking about the future, and even grocery shopping will trigger them because it's too over stimulating for me.
  • Also I do get dizzy during my panic attacks and can't stand up or hold my head up.

They can be normal during pregnancy but seeing a cardiologist would be recommended. They can give you a 24hr holter monitor which will record any episodes in a 24hr period. Then they follow up with you and order additional testing if needed. I'd see if you can get referred and go that route, just to be safe.
  • I have had them a few times too and was told to go to the ER. They checked me out and said it's probably due to the increase in blood flow which effects everyone differently. They offered to do a CT scan of my heart but they didn't think it was necessary at this point. Don't worry too much... But be sure to take care of yourself. Drink lots of water and sit down if it happens.. I know you kind of have to when that happens anyways lol.

I deal with a pounding heart and palpitations daily. I do suffer from an anxiety disorder as well. I have gone to the ER so many times thinking I was having a heart attack. They say a panic/anxiety attack literally feels like you are having heart attack. I wore the holt monitor, had EKG's, and an echocardiogram and my heart is normal. But if you can, get checked out to put your mind at ease, that's the number 1 thing that helps!
  • It happened to me terribly with my first. .. heartrate above 170 for hours on end. Turns out I was very anemic aND needed extra iron.... easy fix.
    good luck!

I haven't had this but I am a cardiologist. While I am not in a position to give you an online opinion, I just wanted to pop in to suggest to get it checked out. A HR of 138 BpM is a tachycardia and through testing your doctors should be able to identify which type of arrhythmia it is. If your pulse is really that fast during the spells, I think it's a good idea to get it checked out.
  • I had them earlier in pregnancy, however I rarely have them now and I'm 25 weeks. I never asked my doctor about it, but researched it enough to know that it's completely normal. It definitely was very annoying when it would happen though!
