Exercise dos and don'ts?!?

Hi everyone, I found out on Tues I am pregnant. Now I am worried if I should be moderating my exercise. I usually do power yoga, Pilates and swimming. Do you think it is ok to continue as normal in the first trimester?

Re: Exercise dos and don'ts?!?

  • Hi!  Congrats!  There is a post on this board labeled "Fit mama weekly check in" where some of this is discussed.  Check it out.  Your question is highly dependent upon how fit you were pre-pregnancy.  I would recommend you talk to your doctor about your fitness routine but my general research (Google) indicates that most of the things you did on a regular basis pre-pregnancy are fine in the first trimester (don't start a new fitness routine obviously if you just found out).  Don't get overheated, drink lots of water, eat back your workout calories, wear comfortable clothes while working out that aren't too restrictive, monitor your heart rate so that you can pass the "talk test" (i.e., can you engage in conversation during exercise without being out of breath), cool down and stretch appropriately and don't do activities that are high impact contact sports such as actual boxing, football, etc or where you are prone to fall.   I work out 6-7 days a week for anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour and a half doing a variety of things like spin, walk/jogging, elliptical, non-heated yoga, etc. and I plan on keeping it up during pregnancy.

  • Thank you so much for your reply. This is so helpful. You are so active! On a good week I will swim 3 times and do one yoga class so I will keep this up. I really appreciate your help
  • Welcome!  Good luck and a happy and healthy 9 months to you!
