We bought a regular crib and didn't struggle at all to switch my 2 and a half year old to a twin with rails we purchased at target for $20 she hasn't fallen out and doesn't realize she can get out in her own and still calls me to get her like she is in the crib. I personally think a toddler bed is a waste of time and then what 3 year old needs a full size bed. A toddler bed is another transition and a gimmicky system, I realize everyone does things different but it seemed like a waste to me, and your paying the extra money for a headboard and footboard
