Crawling?

Uh, when are babies supposed to start crawling? Mine is full-on scooting across the room, so I can no longer just put her on a play mat and watch from afar while I fold clothes or whatever. Isn't that absurdly early? 19 weeks?!
I have no idea how to baby proof my house! I thought I had months to research. Suggestions or how to start?

Re: Crawling?

  • Buy a childproofing kit and some baby gates!  If she's not pulling up to stand you're likely good for objects on tables for a while.  Or, just get a play pen for now for her to play on her mat in.
  • In my experience it's early but I'm just one person! Oh my goodness, scooting across the room! My advice would be to let your LO show you what she wants to get into before you invest in a bunch of unneeded childproofing stuff. It's not like you'd leave her unattended at this age. But for sure outlet covers and cupboard childproofing wherever you store your chemicals.

  • I feel like it's early, but mine is trying like hell to crawl. She has figured out what to do with her legs, but not her hands so hers is a scoot as well. Sometimes she drags her face when she scoots forward so we really have to watch her to try to keep her on her mat/blanket. She also barrel rolls both ways and scoots herself on her back. We call her our squirmy little wormy.
  • I think it's a little early, but my son scoots himself too! He gets up on his knees and pushes his head up, if he could figure out his arms he would be crawling!
  • I don't think they typically start crawling until 6 months but my LO has figured out how to turn himself and scoot when he's on his back. I think he could do it on his stomach if he could work the arms. I was cooking and DH called me to the living room the other day because DS got himself up against the TV stand.
  • My daughter is 21 weeks today...has been up on hands and knees for about 2 weeks. My guess is that she will be crawling within the month. She can definitely move herself and scoot around now.
