Avacodos

Hi this is a repeat from the March 2015 board but I thought I would ask it here too.

I gave my lo mashed avacodos mixed with breast milk yesterday. (First solid food other than cereal) As soon as he ate like 2 bites he threw it up. I chalked it up to the bottle he had just eaten+The new food was too much. Today I tried it again. I gave him it when he was in a good mood and it had been about an hour since he nursed. I barely got a little taste in his mouth and he threw up, a lot emptied his tummy . I'm just wondering if anyone else's lo did something similar with a new food? I'm not sure if he didn't like it so he made himself sick or if it was a reaction... I'm just going to go back to cereal for a few days and maybe try bananas or sweet potatoes next time. Felt so bad for him

Re: Avacodos

  • Maybe the texture or the chunks made him gag and maybe the gagging made him throw up?

  • I also replief to your March 15 post...
It doesn't seem like a reaction to me. DS1 is allergic to avocado and gets a rash from it. My kids went in phases with food. DS3 doesn't like something one day and loves it the next. Keep trying stuff.
  • Mine did the same thing at first. He wasn't used to solids in his mouth and would gag himself until he threw up. Once he got used to the new textures he stopped.

  • Thank you! It's good to hear he's not the only one. Hoping the next food goes better. I noticed yesterday he didn't even like his cereal... And he had been doing fine with it for 2 weeks. Hoping he does better on it again today. I wonder if he was associating it with the avacodos since I mixed it cold. Going to try warm today.
  • My LO is over 8 months old and we have been doing BLW for over a month and she still gags and throws up on food. She did today at lunch. Its a good sign because it prevents them from choking. My LO doesnt like avocado, have tried several times. Butternut squash was a huge hit, so you could try that! She also loved pears. They are both pretty bland and sweet and not too thick. When I started purees if they were not like liquid my LO would gag, but oddly enough was fine feeding herself sticks of food (BLW). I doubt its an allergy, as one of the posters above mentioned it usually will cause a rash. Try some other food, and go back to it a couple of weeks. Good luck! A few other foods that are good are carrots and sweet potatoes. My LO also doesn't like bananas, maybe its the mushiness? Lol.. who knows!
  • My son did this when we first tried avocados.  He wasn't a fan of the taste and would make himself throw up so that there was non of it left in his mouth.  Now he loves them...babies are fun!
