I go in tomorrow at 10 am for an induction. Any tips for meals before? Tonight, we're having a "Last Supper" as a family of two as this is our first child but curious about what I should eat tomorrow morning!
My last supper is tomorrow as my induction is Thursday lol so il be having the hottest and spiciest food I can just incase there's a little chance it helps bring my LO out just before! I'm thinking a Chinese banquet! As for what you eat before you go in I'm not sure I've just been told to make sure your full enough as I'm not sure how long you can go with out eating (specially if it's a long labour) I'm a FTM to so good luck
DH and I are planning on going to Applebee's before we head into the hospital tonight! I'm very much looking forward to it! This is also our first child.
The night before my induction I had steak and it was delicious! lol The doctor said I could have a small light meal that morning but we ended up running late so I didn't eat that morning.
My doc and my cousin (who is an anesthesiologist) warned me against having a big meal right before coming in so we are likely going to have our "last meal" the night before. My cousin said the reason against having a big meal right before is that some of their interventions are more dangerous to do (or things they can't do) if you have a full stomach....and with an induction, you never know which interventions might become necessary.
I wasn't induced, but I had a chicken salad and sweet potato fries for dinner the night my water broke around 4 p.m., then a bowl of ice cream that night right before it broke at 9:45 p.m. I didn't have my little guy until 11:29 a.m. the next morning ... I was starving! But I packed Gatorade to drink during labor and that was a life saver. I also didn't have any gas or poop during labor (at least that I know of), so in that respect I was glad I didn't have a huge meal right before!
Does anyone know how many hours before a scheduled induction one should have their last meal? I don't know have to show up until 7:30pm so was thinking 4/5pm light dinner?
I wasn't induced but with my last labor I had pizza and that was a mistake. I'd suggest something light but filling. Sometimes you vomit during labor. I did with the pizza and it was not fun. This time around I'll go with something a little less greasy and easy on the stomach haha
@aishachalita - I don't know if there is an exact guideline for how long but what my doc told me was that, for an uninduced labor, once you start having contractions, stay away from anything too heavy/greasy. For an induced labor, I think the same rule applies - it's not that you can't eat anything, it's just suggested that you eat something light and kind of bland (because like @beckygoetz93 noted, it tends to make a reappearance!). Both my doc and cousin said the best thing to do is bring things to nibble on (protein bars, trail mix) that give you a lot of bang for your buck (high energy but not a lot of food) and things like Gatorade to drink. As your labor progresses, you'll have a better idea of how you're handling it and whether certain interventions are going to be necessary/likely.
My cousin said there are few things worse as a maternity anesthesiologist than having to do an emergency C-section on someone who just ate a huge meal before coming in!
With DD, I had eggs, OJ, oatmeal with banana and yogurt. I wanted things that would be relatively gentle on my system, but still contain a lot of different nutrients, protein and calories. That is also pretty much what I ate for my first meal after her birth (nutrients, fiber and probiotics to help with that first poop, and oatmeal can also help with milk production).
I wasn't induced this time, but I had eaten granola and a banana for breakfast. I did well with that. With DD1 I had labored all night and DH took me to the hospital around 7, he offered to get me breakfast, but I felt miserable and didn't want anything. With DD2 I was only in false labor that night and had to be there at 6:30 for my induction, I skipped breakfast again because I just felt too yucky. I actually looked forward to my first meal! I stayed so sick with everyone that DH would get me whatever I wanted and bring it back to me after delivery! Zaxbys the first two times and a chicken quesadilla this time!
I'm a nurse and work on a medical-surgical floor, for surgery we have people stop eating at least 8 hours before OR time. OB is different though because we do need energy to labor.
Re: Last Meals before Induction??
Edited because it cut off my last sentence.

And like others have said its best in case you need an intervention.
