3rd Trimester

Cholestasis

Has anyone been diagnosed with Cholestasis of Pregnancy? My doctor is pretty certain I have this condition but have a few more blood draws to confirm (I guess it doesn't show up in blood work right away). Anyway, everything on the internet is terrifying - I should never have googled itchy hands in pregnancy! Just looking for someone who has experienced this or is currently. How big of a concern is it? If you had it in a previous pregnancy, was everything ok in the end?

Re: Cholestasis

  • My sister had it with her twins, it made her terribly uncomfortable, but if you have it they'll treat it and it'll go away when they deliver. They took her via csection about a month early, even though the twins were happy where they were, because that's the only way to get rid of it. But all three of them were safe, and your doctor will take good care of you! Good luck- and stop Googling!!!!

  • I had it with my daughter. I was induced at 37 weeks and she is completely fine. I am now just waiting to develop it again. The itching had me in tears some nights, but it went away less than 24 hours after delivery.
  • I am a nurse for an OB/GYN and we take it very seriously. They will want you monitored more frequently with labs and BPPs, just to ensure you and baby are safe! The outcome is usually fine with the proper monitoring. Good luck!
  • I've had it in 4 pregnancies. It is very serious but best to catch it early for monitoring and medication. My babies all were fine but I was induced early with 3 of them (one didn't wait for the induction and came on his own).
