Any organic mom's and mom's-to-be here?

I am a FTM and just started researching the best organic baby products such as bath products, chem-free disposable diapers, etc and was just wondering if any mom's with experience buy organic for their babies, and if you're a FTM, do you plan to?

If so, what brands do you like and how far do you go as far as what you buy organically? I have even found organic baby sheets.. This is all new to me, any advice would be appreciated :)

Re: Any organic mom's and mom's-to-be here?

  • I buy organic food and most chemical free products such as method or seventh generation. My oldest who is now 8 was very sensitive to everything as a baby so we used and still use vanicreme soap and lotions for him and his brother since it's free of anything anyone could ever be allergic to. I would say buy what you can but don't go crazy about it. We did get an organic mattress for his crib and an organic mattress cover but most everything else was regular. I made a lot of their baby food. Do what feels right to you and as for diapers certain ones work at different times we switched brands a lot depending on what worked best for the stage they were at.
  • We do food, formula (when we need to supplement), cleaning products, bath products.  We didn't even try organic diapers because of the price and reviews - Pampers/Kirkland all the way here.

  • I have heard people like Honest Company diapers for "organic" diapers. The best, most organic and environmentally friendly thing to do for diapers is to buy previously owned cloth diapers. It will save you a TON of money as a friend I know got a shopping bag full of cloth diaper covers and inserts for $100, where as that many brand new will cost $400 or more. But, I personally cannot fathom the time and effort it must take to cloth diaper so I personally don't do it.

For wipes, these are pretty easy to make your own. If you search pinterest there's a bunch of pins on how to make them. Or you can use a damp wash cloth - but then you're doing lots of laundry like with cloth diapers, so totally your call on that.

If you end up needing formula, Costco has an organic formula available, its Vermont Organics.

I will say that a lot of the sunscreens that are organic or mineral based that are highly rated by the EWG end up being poorly rated by Consumer Reports because they don't block UVA (or UVB, can't remember, but it's whichever is the bigger issue concerning skin cancer). So in this case, the product that are supposed to be healthier for you are not a better product.

Lots of companies offer organic cotton baby clothes, sheets, and other textiles.

For soaps/lotions, I have heard a number of people like California Baby products which are available at Target.

  • We do organic milk, meat and most fruit and veggies. We're about 50/50 on organic skincare. A friend made the point that organic clothing, bedding, etc is unnecessary unless you are going to only dress yourself and home in organic fabrics, because baby will be all over your carpets, couches, and even cuddling next to your clothing. Yes, organic cotton is better for the environment, so support it when you can, but don't freak out if you can't afford it for everything.
  • Thanks everyone! I have been looking at Baby Burt's Bees line. I use their bath products myself so I'm hoping they'll work well for baby. Still not completely sure on diapers but Honest seems like a good choice

@SadiePantsR , that's a good point about the organic sheets. I guess I am more concerned about what will be put on the baby and will be absorbed into the skin

My SIL uses Earth's Best and loves them.  There was a thread here about the Honest Company that their diapers may not work great, but it seemed to depend on the baby.  I just wanted to offer up Earth's Best as an alternative.

Burt's Bees is awesome for baby body wash and lotion - neither of my boys had issues with them.  Amazon has combo packs on sale a lot.
