Weight Gain?

Has anyone else already gained more the average number of 3-4 lbs recommended for the first trimester? I was a healthy weight when I became pregnant and I've already gained about 7 lbs. I did quit smoking and quit my medications which can cause an increase in appetite but I'm starting to freak out and I'm starting to get down on myself about it. Am I alone on this??

Re: Weight Gain?

  • I've been dealing with pretty severe bloating since starting IVF meds at the end of June, but lately I'm sensing that my added bulk is more than just gas and water weight. I'll know for sure during my next appointment when I'm weighed, but I've had to stop working out and am seeing and feeling the effects. I had to stop exercising during the stim cycle of IVF and after the embryo transfer was told to do only moderate, low-impact exercise, and from that I put on 4 or 5 lbs. Prior to IVF I used to run long distances several days a week and worked out pretty intensively, so I've been dismayed at losing muscle tone over the past couple of months and getting increasingly bloated in the abdominal area. I was thrilled when my OB gave me the green light to start running again and doing Pilates, but then this past week I started bleeding and was told by my OB that I needed bed rest and could not resume exercise until she advises otherwise. I know I'm falling out of shape and already am not fitting into any of my clothes. I'm afraid to see what the actual number will be as far as my weight gain. It's most important to me to have a healthy baby, and there's no question I'll do whatever it takes, but it's still rough to see what's happening to my body. All my research in the past few years of ttc convinced me that exercise during pregnancy is healthy for both Mum and baby, and I thought I would be able to be much more active.

  • I'm up seven pounds at only six weeks. All I can stomach are carbs, and I'm too sick to work out. A pretty huge part of me is freaking out, but it helps to know that I've gone from obese to ideal bmi before, and I can do it again.
I will be asking my ob for a referral to a nutritionist, though.
  • I've gained just over 5, and I'm just at 10 weeks. Before I got pregnant I didn't eat carbs very much, but now it's all I can stomach, so I'm pretty sure that and the bloat are responsible. Eh. It is what it is. Now that I'm starting to be able to stomach veggies again I'll go back to some big salads for lunch which will help a lot.

  • Glad I'm not alone. I've been trying to continue exercising when my energy level allows it but I just feel huge right now. It's pretty discouraging when I talk to other moms who say they didn't gain anything until the fourth month!
  • I was dieting and working out before I got pregnant, so now that that's stopped due to this amazing sickness, I'm up 4-5 pounds and have quite the stomach. Carbs are about all I can stomach right now as well. Glad to hear I'm not the only one.

  • Yeah I weighed myself the other day and I'm up TEN POUNDS. Praying some of it is water weight. I just eat all day every day because it's the only thing that keeps the nausea at bay. I'm still running, but now about 12 miles a week as compared to maybe 20+ miles a week before. It sucks, but I have to do what I have to do to function throughout the day... I work full-time and have a two-year-old at home!

  • I'm up 4 lbs which honestly shocks me. I would have expected to have gained much much more. I gained a total of 36 lbs during my first pregnancy and I started overweight in the first place. Being 5 foot 3 and 200 lbs was brutal. So this time, I'm starting 10 lbs heavier than last pregnancy and am a bit scared to go much over the 200 lb mark. I'm 26 lbs away from it now with 30 weeks to go. Yikes.
  • I've lost 2 lbs since my first appointment, but I started a little overweight. With my first I lost almost 10 lbs in the first trimester.

  • Nothing sounds good to eat at all ! I've lost 6 pounds I can't afford to loose and I'm only 9 weeks. Hopefully it gets better and the nausea subsides. With my first one (that I lost at 8 weeks )I had gained 6 pounds by 7 weeks but I think the progesterone supplement was the reason behind the weight gain. I'd gladly gain weight if I could only enjoy food again ! :-&
  • I haven't gained any, but I'm only 6 weeks and am still holding on to 20 lbs from my last 2 pregnancies.  I'm hoping the weight gain this time around is minimal.
  • Also wanted to add that I gained a lot of weight in the beginning for my last pregnancy too, but ended up gaining exactly the 30 recommended pounds. It did even out/slow down for me... just be sensible and eat healthy and you will be okay. I lost all 30 lbs by my 6 week PP check-up and started this pregnancy out about 25 lbs lighter than my last one. So try not to stress *too* much about it and just make good decisions! And know that one you feel better, you can focus more on eating healthfully again!
