August 2015 Moms

Itchy breasts while breastfeeding?

Hey ladies! I'm originally a September mom (EDD early September), but I've popped in the August board here and there :) . I ended up being induced at 38 weeks for gestational hypertension and had my little man on August 23rd :x :D . So now I'm officially an August mom! :)

Anyways, I'm exclusively breastfeeding and noticed my breasts itch (like the inside of my breasts, maybe from the flow of milk through my ducks??) almost every time I nurse my son. It's not uncomfortable or painful. Just kind of like a tingling itch throughout my breasts? Just wondering if anyone else experiences this? I thought it was pretty strange! Thanks in advance. Congrats on all the beautiful August babies!!! :)

Re: Itchy breasts while breastfeeding?

  • hi! I was supposed to be an august momma, but our little man came at 37+1 in july. I'm breastfeeding as well, and I've noticed the itchy sensation, too. I guess it's normal :)

  • Mine itch after...not really tingling like you are describing though. Just flat out itching when im done. Part of me thinks its the stretch marks I can feel but can see on my boobs, but no clue why they only itch after feeding.

mine itch after for a while, too. and my nipples have started to burn when it's time for him to eat. such a weird body!!
  • Mine do the same thing! I think maybe it has to do with blood flow?
  • I had exactly what you were experiencing for the first 2 weeks or so. I am now 3 1/2 weeks postpartum and do not notice it itching anymore.
  • Mine don't really itch, but they definitely do tingle when nursing.  I assume is just the juices flowing?

Occasionally when I nurse in the cradle position, DD will take her hand and kind of massage my breast.  If her nails are on the longer side that does result in an itching sensation.  But it's from her tiny little fingers gently scratching me!
  • I tingle currently but the itchiness is definitely a thing. People report itchy underarms too - guess it's the baby tickling nerves that send an itchy message to your brain?
  • Could it be your let down? I don't feel mine, but I know lots of women describe it as a tingly feeling....
  • I get an itching sensation that starts in my breasts and spreads all the way up my neck. It itches forever after nursing, too. I haven't noticed if I get a rash or anything yet, but I know if this keeps up too much more I'm personally going to be calling my doctor to see if I'm having some sort of reaction to breastfeeding hormones or something.

Granted, I did get weird, unexplainable rashes all during my pregnancy, too. I have a lot of allergies and skin sensitivities, so it wouldn't surprise me if the hormones I'm now producing are bothering me.

Just know that there's almost always more than one reason you could be experiencing what you're experiencing. Hopefully your itch will go away on it's own over time!
  • Not sure why but lately I have the super itchy feeling too. It only happens when LO is nursing and only in the breast that she is using. Mine happens at all times during the feeding and not just in the beginning during a letdown. Idk why.
  • Check baby's tongue for signs of possible thrush. We're getting through a bout of thrush right now, it causes the nipples to burn and/or itch.
  • No itching here, but one morning while particularly engorged, I was getting DS to latch (he doesn't like when I let go of my boob right away) I could feel the milk flowing through me. It was very strange.
