HELP NEWLY DIAGNOSED WITH GD

I am currently 30 weeks pregnant and was at first informed after my 3hr test I did not have gd. Then after my visit 2 days ago they said I was in the borderline of having it. I am a very picky eater as it is, I only eat fruits (which now I have to cut way back), veggies, salads, chicken, fish, and yogurt. Not too big on breads though I do eat whole grain wraps as well. From my understanding as long as my 2hr post meal bg is normal than I am ok.. Is this correct? Also any inputs on snack ideas? I do prior to this text feel myself clearly crashing in between meals

  • There is a great discussion on this topic on the Sept board. It may not be your "home" board, but they are super helpful and can definitely provide you some answers! :)

  • My snacks were things like protein bars,  half an apple, half a banana, nuts, maybe deli turkey with cheese and crackers.

  • If they end up saying you have GD and wanting you to test through the day, then they'll want to know your numbers before and after meals.

Some people can control their GD with diet and exercise, and some people end up needing insulin. It's just that your insulin needs go up as you go further along and your pancreas can either keep up or it can't.

Daily exercise, drinking water and minimising caffeine are all good for controlling blood sugars (not to mention just healthy in general).

I snack on raw nuts, small portions of fruit, yoghurt, peanut butter or cheese on grainy/Low GI cracker. I try and have protein with my carbs. But also you can eat as much of a lot of veges as you want (green, salad type veges)

Everyone's body responds differently. I can eat somethings at lunchtime with no issues, but if I eat the same thing at dinner time it spiked my blood sugars. I can snack on fruit between meals, and have it with my breakfast, but if I have a piece of fruit as part of my carbs with lunch or dinner then that spikes my blood sugars.

So it is a bit of trial and error.

Do you eat other carbs like rice/pasta/sweet potato/baked beans/milk ?

My dietician has me eating 12 portions of carbs a day, which sounds like a lot but each portion is quite small. eg for lunch I might have 2 pieces of bread (2 portions) salad, tuna, and a glass of milk (1 portion). I have three meals of 3 carbs, and 3 snacks of 1 carb. So the carbs are spread through the day, and you shouldn't be starving or crashing between meals.

I'm sure you''ll end up getting lots of advice and support though if you end up tipping into the GD category. Also the high risk pregnancy board has a number of ladies with GD who are all very helpful.

    Best wishes.

  • I was diagnosed with GD at 24 weeks and I am now 33. It was a difficult transition at first but I will say that being on the GD diet has me feeling better than ever (even pre-pregnancy). I eat a lot salad, nuts, and cheeses. I can't eat any fruit in the morning as it spikes my sugar and I feel very bad afterward. In the beginning I felt starved between meals but I always keep nuts with me and I've started making smoothies at home so I can be sure they are appropriately balanced. In the past 2 weeks I've noticed that my sugars are a little higher then they were eating the same foods which my dr tells me is normal. I have started eating dinner a bit later and avoiding my bed time snack so my fasting sugars aren't too high in the morning. On a side note, I found a great recipe for a GD friendly cheesecake recipe, let me know if you want it. Good luck and I promise after a week or so it gets better on the diet! I have a ton more energy and have actually lost weight :)
