MIDDLE name...

My fiance and I are having our first child together and we are set on the name Braxton. My family and I are happy with it despite what some people might think. It's actually similar to my fiancés name as well as the county where his family originated from. And I personally just think it sounds very strong, masculine, and modern, but also hope others wouldnt judge someone based on a name. However, I originally came on here to get help with a middle name that might go with it. I never done this before but I just assumed women would be more supportive and would want to help build confidence in other pregnant women in stead of tearing them down. Therefore, I was looking for help making up my mind, as well as some fresh (serious) ideas. Some names I picked (Giovanni after my grandfather), others my mother in law (hence Emerson). Thanks for any advice I can actually get on the middle name...And just for the record I'd like to say in advance I kindly disagree with any negitive feeback on my son's first name (I think I heard enough and got the point), but cannot be persuade otherwise. Thanks for your time!

Re: MIDDLE name...

  • I like all of your middle names so much more than Braxton! Just curious, are you or your fiance Italian? If you are I like Giovanni, if not I say Alexander.
  • My grandmother was 100% Italian. My fiance and I are both about a 3rd.

Nathaniel and Alexander are great names! I love love love Nathaniel! Wouldn't you consider Braxton as a middle name if you really must use it? It's just not on the same level as the others.

  • There's no reason to be rude, if you all don't like the name why bother responding. Do you just like to make people feel bad?!
  • Hicks was my first thought too but seriously, Braxton is not good. All of your middle names are solid though. Nathaniel Giovanni would be a cool name. I like Alexander Cole also.
  • I didn't think Braxton Hicks until someone said it, and now that's all I can think...but I voted for Giovanni because I love when the mn honors a relative. Braxton Giovanni or Giovanni Braxton are both nice.
  • Telling someone they don't like a name isn't rude. Braxton will remind all mothers of hicks and plenty of other people too. It just lacks so much in comparison to all the middle names.

  • Saying Hicks was just rude. She was not being serious therefore not helpful at all. There are so many names I don't agree with but I don't go out of my way to make a nick name, which to me is making fun of and childish. I came here for help on the MIDDLE name. Obviously a bunch pregnant women would know about braxton hicks but honestly notveveryone. My fiance didn't and he has 2 other kids.
  • I was fine with not liking it, obviously not everyone's going to like every name but the hicks comment was just uncalled for. I'm sorry but I just personally wouldn't make someone feel indifferent about a name they choice for their child.

Also I would find things like that helpful before hand vs after using said name

  • No one is getting out of shape lol. I cam
  • I came asking about a middle name for my child. I'm sorry I thought this was a bunch a women that were here to support and be helpful to one one another. I guess I shouldn't just assume people wouldn't be negative.
  • And of course it comes to a bunch of pregnant women's minds, so I guess I just shouldn't of asked on here. Thanks
  • That's fine I guess I was wrong. I just thought people would comment on the names I asked about not a name I'm already set on. It's just I felt like saying Hicks when I asked for a middle name was just making about my son's name. And I'm not oblivious to the fact that there's braxton hicks but lots of names can be associated with other things and I didn't think it was that big of a deal to people. If someone can let me know how to delete this I gladly will. Maybe I can just do a poll without giving the first name. I just thought it be better if people knew what it was going with obviously.
  • And that's fine but for one it's not what I asked about and 2 just saying Hicks is not a serious option.

It doesn't just come to pregnant women's minds. Shortly after I was done high school (and I didn't have a baby until I was 33) a girl I knew (not friends, just knew) had a baby boy. She named him Braxton. My BFF and I both thought it was weird because the only association with that name was Braxton Hicks. I have heard the name several times since (again, all before having my son) and that's the first thing that jumps to mind.

ETA thought I quoted OP saying of course it would come to pregnant people's minds. Guess I didn't. Don't know how to add a quote once I've already posted.

Not pregnant, and I think of Toni and Hicks.

  • FWIW I had a student named Braxton. Great kid! I was not pregnant but as soon as I saw his name on my roster I thought 1) Braxton Hicks and 2) why would his mother name him that? I understand you were only asking the middle name, but it's a Baby Names board so you're going to get opinions on all things name related. This is what people you meet in real life will think. Better to know now while you still have a chance to change it. The name stands out even more because you have some really good middle name choices. If you're set on Braxton, I like Alexander.

  • But why is it so horrible if someone thinks that at first anyway. I would hope once they got to met my child they would get past that. And no not everyone that's associates that with hicks has been or are pregnant but believe it or not there is a lot of people who don't automatically think of that either or would bother them. I just don't understand though why it had to go off topic. I asked about the middle name and this has turned into a debate about the name I already explained from the beginning I was set on.
  • I understand I guess I really don't care than what others think. My fiance and I agree on it and our families liked it even when when I asked them about the hicks thing bc I knew it would be brought up. Honestly more than half didn't know what I was talking about. I just am disappointed everyone focused on that than helping me with the middle name. I would really like to delete this now it just giving me anxiety, instead of helping me out. Thanks for everyone's input. I apologize for any misunderstanding.
  • I think Braxton Troy Evans sounds really good together. Also, haters gonna hate. Braxton is just as good as any boy name out there. :)
  • Braxton isn't a great choice period. Very trendy. Screams born in 2015. I don't think it will age well. How about Bradley?
  • Maybe Toni? Maybe Toni Braxton?
  • I love Bradley but we wanted something a lil different though and I honestly didn't know it was so trendy especially if it's this bad.
  • Actually another person just commented Hicks with no other critique, just to stir the pot in my opinion. I never said it bothers me that people think that, I just thought it was unnecessary when I didn't ask about that name and I just get a Hicks comment. I just honestly didn't know I'd get this hate, I'm pregnant with my first and was happy about having a name picked out, but now I have people bashing it, so sorry it's a little disheartening. I just thought I would get people's opinion on the middle name, plus i thought other pregnant women would be more supportive or at least more empathetic. But like you said lots of names can be associated with different things, so why is this one so horrible. I actually know some one who's daughter is Summer and son is Tyson (weird you said those) and I thought they were cute, it didn't matter to me what they could be associated with. My stepson is Noah and of course I thought ark right away but he made the name his own. Jackson, a million things come to mind but I still like the name.
  • I love Bradley but we wanted something a lil different though and I honestly didn't know it was so trendy especially if it's this bad.
    Ooh! Numbers time!

Bradley is actually less popular then Braxton and has been for since 09. Both names have been in the top 200 for that time as well. Braxton is trending up while Bradley is trending down. 2300 boys were named Bradley last year, 3300 boys were named Braxton.

Now then, historically Bradley is a more common name, and from 1960 to 1997 was in the top 100. Braxton meanwhile has been gaining more usage, first breaking into the top 1000 in 85. Bradley has a name is fairly timeless. He could be a kid, a young professional or a grandfather, you can't Timestamp his name. Braxton though, is going to be more likely to be relegated to this generation. It has rare usage before the 80's, and even then wasn't super common until the 2000's. Basically it looks like you took the name from Braxton family values. Also keep in mind the rise of the Jaxons. Similar sounding, and overused. This also isn't the first time we've seen this name on here, I'm pretty sure each and every one of the BMB's has at least one or two.

If you are set on this name because it's "different" then well, its not. Bradley is the less popular name, and it doesn't have the associations Braxton has.

I just honestly never meet a Braxton but know a few Brads. And my fiance and I had to look up Braxton family values, I don't have cable and never heard of this show. I remember Toni Braxton but I thought she was a good songer.
  • And FYI for those who said it wasn't even a name. Braxton hicks were actually named after the doctor who described them while working with pregnant women.

Braxton wasnt his first name though. He was Dr. John Braxton Hicks. It was originally a surname (per behindthename, which my stupid phone won't let me cut and paste)

Edit: typos, and to say I like the flow of Braxton Cole the best of your choices. Of all the names listed, my favorite combo is Nathaniel Braxton

  • Braxton is a surname, not a first name.

  • Respectfully OP, I think the person who said Hicks was basically the first to say what a lot of people were thinking. That's something that is usually a great benefit of this board; you get a good idea of an unbiased opinion from a sample of people.

And of course you don't know any Braxtons but you know several Brads. Braxton is right on trendy with the recent surge in popularity in the surname trend.
