Re: UO Thursday

  • I love Valentines Day because it's my dad's birthday. SO and I will exchange small things....mostly silly. I think I got him a snow shovel this past year. We both agree that it should be a big deal if we want it to be but we usually just go about normal business.

    Ooh I remembered!

I REFUSE to convert my pregnancy progress to months for people. For one, I can't quickly do the math because I only track in weeks. Second (and maybe bc I'm a PGAL) but every week to me feels like a milestone. There's no fun in saying I'm 3.5 months, it sounds so early.. then you have to say the same progress point 4 weeks in a row? No thanks. I like that every Weds I'm a new week and baby is a new fruit

I'm opposite, I'm in between 17-18 and I say almost 4&1/2. To me it's easier than weeks and everyone always asks so I have to convert to weeks in my head. But it's funny cuz I feel like saying months makes me feel further than weeks. Although I still enjoy referencing a new fruit weekly.
    :D
My whole pregnancy was weeks, but once DD turned 3 months, I used months and half months. It was confusing when I told people she was 46 1/2 weeks.

When I lived in Ohio, they celebrated Sweetest Day. It was like a Valentine's Day for the guys. I had never heard of it before I lived there and don't know if it's celebrated anywhere else, but I thought it was really lame.

UO: I hate reality TV. It makes me sad.

Most of the reality TV doesn't do it for it me. I do have a few guilty pleasures though. What's your guilty pleasure Claire Bear? ;)

@ccoleeman It's called Naloxone and you're right, pharmacists can now legally dispense it without a prescription. DH is a pharmacist and is a little concerned that it's going to give addicts a false sense of security, but it's better than nothing until the epidemic is under control. Ohio is so bad with heroin and prescription drug abuse. I believe the number of OD deaths is now close to, or past, car accidents. I'm in central Ohio... Good to see another Buckeye on here! There's a few of us on this BMB!

  • UO: here goes nothing..

People that become pregnant unexpectedly, such as I did, and quit school piss me off. If you have absolutely no other option but to quit and work to support yourself and your LO then I am fine, but girls that drop out of school before they even ATTEMPT to go while having a child make me sick. I have a FULL time schedule where I will be at school Monday-Friday three of those days till 10 at night. It will be difficult, but isn't that life?
  • @SummerOH and @ccoleman I'm an Ohio girl here too! Born and raised in east Columbus, and now living on the Southeast side in the suburbs. Pretty cool to have other Ohioans on the board!

Whaaaat that's not bad TV I love both of those shows.
  • @SummerOH Wow. It seems crazy to me that Naloxone is OTC there. (I work in a pharmacy as well.) Does your DH dispense much of it?

@lemasted and @ccoleman I'm also from Ohio! I was born in Coulmbus, but moved to GA about 15 years ago. A bunch of my family still lives there. I can't wait for football to start again. Go Bucks!

I'm a little late to this but: I tried to not use pacis. But I had two babies at the same time. When you have two babies at the same time you give them anything that makes them happy in the first 6-8 weeks. Pacis made them happy. And then we were kind of stuck with them. They just use them in cribs and car seats now. Hoping to wean before new baby comes. They'll be 20 months then.
  • I hate New Year's Eve. Hate it. I don't want to stay up with a bunch of drunk strangers celebrating changing the calendar, never saw the point. I like to think that this year I actually have something to look forward to around NYE ;)
  • UO: I literally hate bacon. Nobody gets me, or they look at me like I'm an alien from mars. Its greasy and too salty. Just, I can't. [-(

@KaraEpp16 Haha I was about to say the same thing! My dad is also a Valentine Baby! All my Valentine's Day memories are celebrating his birthday so it's a happy day to me. :) I think DH secretly loves it because I never expect to do anything since the day is all about my dad in my mind.

    @RepeatPostPolice - From 5 pages ago...

I was reading up on pacifiers yesterday because I was feeling like this too. Mayoclinic talks about pros and cons. It seems that between 4 weeks (once babies are nursing peoperly) and about 6 months or so, pacifiers appear to reduce the risk of SIDs. I was pretty surprised there were any benefits other than having peace and quiet.

The second thing I found interesting is that for air travel children and adults can clear their ears by forced swollowing and yawning. Pacifiers apparently help babies do the same.

They have some tips to avoid having babies that rely on pacifiers full time and to avoid ending up with 3 year old pacifier users.
  • @nanamp sorry I just saw this. :)
I don't want to make an ass of myself by talking about SIDS without having properly researched it again (I knew it 2 yrs ago when DD was born!), but regarding my opinion on pacis:

I think pacifiers are more intended to be a soother, but the rec I had seen on them was not to let infants use them after 6 mos because the attachment to it starts to develop and it can be very difficult for them to give it up and find other methods of self-soothing. Hence why you sometimes see toddlers with them.
It also depends on the baby. My DD only took the paci once. She didn't like it. It could be her personality, it could be because we were BFing. I don't know for sure. For air travel, I just nursed her as we were taking off and she never had a problem with the pressure changes.
I don't care if other people use them, but I don't see them as a necessity. :)

  • Also late:

When my SIL and BIL came out to visit MIL bought diapers, hoarded bottles, bought clothes she wanted him to wear while he was out. Pretty much everything baby. She was given a brand new pack and play and a ton of bottles and she's keeping it all for her for when our son is over there... I guess I think it's weird when grandmas are over obsessive and want to buy and keep everything. I know she means well but it's just weird to me. Our child is not half yours to need all that stuff.
  • @Love4littlethings24 MIL watched DD while I was working, and has one of the toys from the extra playmat she bought for her house hanging from the rearview mirror in her car. I'm like, I get it, you love your grandbaby but that is over the top, imo.
  • @RepeatPostPolice seriously it's just over the top in my opinion. It's making me already feel the need to be mama bear over this child. It's like they didn't get enough baby years or something. Get a cat lady.
  • MIL did a lot of things that just rubbed me the wrong way and pushed me into mama bear mode so fast and hard I'm surprised I didn't actually growl at her sometimes.
I wish I could give you some sage advice on ignoring it or whatever but I just never figured out how to get past it. It's hurt our relationship from my perspective. Sad to say, but in some ways it's a relief that we live so far away now.

I volunteer for Recovery Resources in Ohio which deals with mental illness and addiction; the heroin epidemic is out of control. However, there was a recent bill passed in Ohio that will allow OTC purchase of a "drug" (can't remember the name offhand) that you can administer to someone having an overdose that sends them into acute withdrawal, it's absolutely lifesaving and is non-addictive.
Doesn't solve the problem but it'll prevent deaths. The drug issue isn't something to society can arrest it's way out of, prisons are NOT mental health institutions but they're basically treated as such.

So many people close to me have battled and even overcome mental illness and addiction. It's amazing to see someone become the best version of themselves once they're free of it.

    Anyway I have 2 UOs.
    1. I hate when people play the anxiety card. Especially if they start a sentence with "I have anxiety about ___" . No, you don't. Anxiety is a legit mental health issue. You don't get to pick what gives you anxiety. You either have DIAGNOSED anxiety or you are feeling ANXIOUS about something. It's ok to be anxious about something. It's not ok to claim a disorder to get your way.
Also, anxious and impatient are not synonymous. I get anxious about test results. I get impatient in traffic.

    2. ....I had a second one that had been on my mind all day and I have forgotten it TWICE because PREGNANCY BRAAAAIN. Son of a b.

THIS TIMES A MILLION. I have been actually diagnosed with anxiety disorder. Nothing irritates me more than people who claim to have "anxiety" about situations that 1. Are usually completely controllable and 2. Are things that NORMAL to be anxious about. Sorry that you get freaked out because you don't know what you're going to do because I dunno, your rent is due and you don't have a way to pay it. Make a plan. But I get anxiety attacks sometimes literally for no reason. Do you sit in your room and hyperventilate over nothing? No? Okay.

Off my soap box. Mental illness awareness is very important to me. Lol
