I believe that pot should be leagal across the board. Legalize, tax, and regulate. The amount of revenue that Colorado alone has pulled in from it is astounding and they are putting it to good use in schools and bettering the state.
The real "war on drugs" should be targeting the insane amount of increasing meth labs, as that is a scary epidemic that is killing young people at record speed.

My hometown is having an epidemic with heroin right now. I've seen so many kids I've gone to school with fall into it and not many make it out. Two kids I went to school with died this week alone. It breaks my fricken heart. You don't know who is struggling with it. They should really legalize pot and then put the money into schools and better mental health/addiction facilities. Our country has gone too long putting bandaids on mental health issues with big pharma or ostracizing people with mental health issues/addictions.

    Edit:more words.
I couldn't agree more. My younger cousin went to a 90 day facility for heroin, it almost killed her. Most of the time, mental health problems go hand in hand with hardcore drug abuse and addiction. I wish people would remove their heads from their asses and see the bigger picture here.

It's become a hot topic for a lot of local politicians, now. So the issue is gaining acknowledgement - I know that there has been some head way in Mass with certain cities offering a get out of jail free card if you turn in your supply and ask for help. I know that it started with the "designer drugs".  Like oxy, vicodin and percocet - you can get the same low feeling from heroin and it's cheaper - so a lot of kids turn to that. I think that the D.A.R.E programs don't emphasize enough that you will ruin your life. It's more focused on just say no where as they should be teaching you that if you get caught and arrested for dealing/using it's hard to get a good job after you are clean and out of jail. It starts a vicious cycle of criminal behavior out of desperation for survival. Then, I feel like it sadly gets to..."Well, what is there to live for?"

I think you're right about the consequences of those choices not getting enough attention.
Have you ever seen the anti-smoking ads of the people with holes in their throat and such?
    Horrifying, but effective.

What the heck is Sip & See? An "official" party to meet the baby? Is this an extention of the Gender (AKA SEX) Reveal party?

Yes. I see it as, if you didn't get a shower thrown for you, you have one of these in hopes people bring you stuff. Nope, nms.
When my mom had my brother her mom hosted a baby holding party and invited her friends and ladies from her church (it was her first grandchild). There weren't gifts, it was literally for people to take turns holding the baby. You could kind of knock out a bunch of people meeting baby at once instead of dropping by at different times for weeks. I always thought that it was really sweet and assumed a sip and see was the same thing, but if it's a gift event then I wouldn't have one for sure. I wouldn't have one anyways in the winter, just seems like a bad idea.
  • I taught history and the 8th grade US history curriculum leaves out the revolutionary war! That's kind of important
    Ew.

I would love to be a history teacher. That's what I would do if I went to school - but the politics are ridiculous. I am proud of the teachers that do navigate in that kind of environment, though.

I hear you! Is it for a standardized test? Our math series has a test at the end of each topic where the kids have to fill in bubbles, but thankfully that's it.

I loved teaching while I was doing it. But all the political BS was too much for me to handle. I'm far to opinionated and the things schools ask teachers to do for the sake of looking good pissed me off

Our math and LA series both had them but that was four years ago and the district has since started having the kindergartners and first graders do computer-based standardized testing. Craziness

We've made such great moves on the anti tobacco campaign! It makes me feel like there is hope for other things. This generation coming up will probably never think to put a cigarette in their mouth. Maybe we need PSAs around here about the heroin use. ugh.
  • I hate Valentine's Day.  As a kid it was fine because everyone got cards from your whole class.  In middle school/high school, I wasn't exactly popular with the boys and... let's just say it was very easy to find my locker on V-Day.  I still remember feeling left out, even now that I've had someone to love/give me gifts for ten years.  So we refuse, which works out great because my cat destroys flowers, and my classroom kids give me enough candy to last until Spring Break.
    ^This!!!  Hate Valentine's day!

We just had 2 die this weekend/early week from it too :/
We may know each other, then! Or this is just way more spread than we'd like to think about.
  • @Snoopylovesbelle YESSSS

Even I know common core is crap, and I'm not a teacher, and don't have kids lol.

My sister is 13 however, and they use it...

It was part of the reason (only part) that I switched my major from early ed to behavioral science in my 3rd year.

I seriously applaud all teachers not only on the job that they have and it's importance, but on all the bull crap they have to wade through to even be able to do their jobs in the 1st place.... it's insane.

UO: I wouldn't guess this is an UO but apparently it is. I seriously get annoyed seeing repeat offenders. Those making a new repeat thread (what seems like) every day. The reason I say this is my UO is because so many people seem to be encouraging it!

You are not the only one!
  • Yep. Very widespead. It sucks. It's cheap and communities are in denial and don't want to seem like they're inviting addicts in by having resources available in their towns/cities.
  • I don't think we need heroine PSAs, I think we need a comprehensive mental health overhaul in this country as part of an even broader healthcare overhaul to provide insurance with benefits including in and out patient therapy and rehabilitation services, including prescription coverage for everyone. People are self medicating because they're desperate, and those that tried drugs for other reasons and significantly altered their brain chemistry need help too. Throwing people in prison solves nothing.

    Hence my clever screen name. 8-}
  • I currently hate summer. The only reason I kinda like it is the beach and my birthday otherwise it can go away. I want it to be fall with sweaters and pumpkins and then I want all the snow

Eh, I'm not a big fan of snow, unless I'm inside and going to stay there, looking out my window at it. Fall is the best!

I feel you! I hate the 110 degree weather. Ready to dress up my bump for Halloween
  • @Snoopylovesbelle I love fall too. And I'll be honest, all the ladies with tips for wearing leggings properly got me slightly interested in them. This may or may not be coincidental to my last good pair of jeans falling apart on me.

    Fleece lined leggings FTW!

I discovered fleece lined leggings on our honeymoon. We went to Banff in November. I was freezing my butt off and bought a pair at roots :)
  • @snoopylovesbelle Fall is the BEST. This time of year I always get excited for it too! I can't wait for pumpkin flavored everything, apple and pumpkin picking, apple cider donuts, sweaters and leggings, changing leaves...
  • Here's a UO I don't carve pumpkins. I had the stomach flu on Halloween and my mom was carving them in the kitchen. The smell still makes me throw up.
  • Currently drooling over the idea of fleece lined leggings. But do they make your legs look thicker?!

    Umm by the time we're actually wearing those, everything is going to look small next to the belly. 8-}

    Eta words
  • I have like 5 pairs. Absolutely love them!!

I'm drooling over this!! I love fall flavors. I make an AMAZINGLY pumpkin monkey bread. I'm also looking forward to layers. As my belly grows. I like the more covered look rather than summer clothes!
  • @je&moeder Yeah… I told my mom no baby shower, then last night she told me she will throw one because it's more for her and the family. She wants to buy all the baby clothes and watch me open them and people want to see me, blah blah blah. I told her that she's trying to torture her poor daughter…

  • My UO. I hate Fall.
It makes me sad that summer is over. I hate the leaves turning colour. I hate sweaters.
I'm the girl wearing white past labour day.
  • My UO: my DD started her period yesterday (shes 11) i am not ready for her to grow up. 11 just seems to young she should still be playing with barbies not changing her pad. F U mother nature you are no friend of mine!
  • @sarah92544 my niece started hers this year at 9. Her pediatrician guessed it had a lot to do with the hormones put into food these days.
  • I didnt even think to ask her pediatrician
