Parenting after 35

Elvis has left the building!

Ok, not Elvis, just my 20 month old and his crib :(  Over the weekend the zipper of the crib tent that has been keeping Captain Crazy pants in his crib broke and I had to put him down for his nap with the flap open.  Well, he seized the opportunity at freedom and heaved himself over the rail.  The thud and subsuquent blood curtiling scream was enough to send me into cardiac arrest.  He got a nice knot on his noggin but in all he was ok.  You would have thought he would have scared the $@# out of himself, but no such luck.  I can't replace the tent because I had no clue that it is now on the no-no list (by way of bumpers and such).  I now have resorted to turning the crib so the opening faces the wall with the tent still on but this is only a temp. solution.  My Mom sews so she replaced the zipper but he figured out how to open it (even when it was pinned closed).  And has already plopped his leg up on the bars and said "Out, Out"I am so not ready for him to be in a toddler bed.  He is a horrible sleeper to begin with.  It would be a nightmare with him being out of the crib.  He would rip the room apart.  I literally would have to take EVERYTHING out of his room because this boy is into EVERYTHING.  Also, getting out of the room would be hellacious, envision small sobbing boy with a pathetic look on his face screaming "Mama. Mama"

For those with older kids what did you do to transition from the crib and at what age?  I have a 3 year old who is in a big girl bed but she never tried to escape the crib so she went right from her crib to a twin sized bed.  She never gave me any trouble going to sleep.  This is all new to me.  This boy may be the death of me :)

  • Oh god!!!
I had to scroll back to see how old he was... 20 months!!! I feel your pain!!

My 3.5yo DD1 is STILL in her crib and even though she is a crazy, adventurous monkey she hasn't figured out that one can clumb out. I keep saying she will be in there till she's 5 bc the second I put her in an open bed we'll never sleep another minute...
No advice but you have my hugs!

  • Oh Geeps!! Again we are at the same crossroads! My girl has not climbed out yet but she's thinking about it. She's put her leg over the rail then thought better of it. I have no idea how much time we really have because she could suddenly decide at any time to go for it. We are getting a toddler bed ready but I hope we don't have to use it for awhile because everything will change. Right now she is such a great sleeper. When we put her in the crib she knows it's time to sleep. With a bed I know she's going to stay up and play.

Good luck mama!! Keep us posted!

  • No useful advice since my son is like your daughter. He was in his crib until he was almost 3 then right to a full size bed (we had one & it's what his crib converted too). I am thinking combination of safety gate across doorway & removing anything dangerous. Hopefully furniture is already secured to the wall. The only thing we did at 3 when he was not sleeping well was drop his nap. He would play until he passed out. He is also a night owl & still only sleeps from 8:30-5am.
  • Lol. It's not funny but your post still made me chuckle. I soooo feel your pain. My oldest only climbed out once but he's ALL boy so from that perspective I totally get it. He was a horrible sleeper. He didn't sleep through the night until he was 12 mo. We kept him in his crib until he was 3. At 3 we out him into a twin. Suddenly my boy who slept til 7am was getting up at 4am. Only it didn't dawn on him that he could just get up. Instead he stood on his bed and screamed mommy over and over and over again. 4am! Every. Single. Day.

My DD is 2.5. She suddenly started rejecting the crib around 24 mo. Just did not and would not sleep in it. Would scream for hours. Try to comin out. She's been in our bed. We have a twin bed for her but there's been so much adjustment with new baby, potty training, no paci etc. So we haven't pushed it.

I would probably do a baby gate at his door do at least he can't hurt himself. Ugh. I know it's frustrating.
