Ellie sounds like a forever three year old or I picture Ellie Mae. Seriously Ellie is sooooooo overdone I would look for a new name. With literally every E name using it and even Penelope which is a new one I'm hearing I'm over it and she will be Ellie last name initial.
There are so many Ellie names tO choose from, I would not use it as a stand alone name. Give your LO the option of using a more formal name. Maybe consider a name that ends in -elle like Danielle or Gabrielle.
I'm not sure why I like it so much, I want a modern girl name, spelled correctly & I just can't seem to find one I like.
A lot of modern names fall into trendy names which in turn are dated in a few years. Like Jennifer it was everywhere and now no one uses it really. I'll try with some suggestions that are not classic names
Cara Dahlia Luna Nina Bianca Flora Fiona Delaney Selah Eden Esme Aria Audra Willa Isla Estelle or Estella Helena Elin Miriam Kira Ruby Adele
Although I completely agree it is overdone, I like Ellie and I know a mid 30 yr old with the name and it suits her well. It just depends on whether you want your daughter to be 1/5 children with the name or you want her to be a little different.
I wouldn't use it as a stand alone name. It isn't a name that matures well. As a nn, it is SO overdone. Elizabeth, Ella, Eleanor, Eloise, Elliott, any name that ends in elle/ella are all going by Ellie. They're everywhere! You can find something much better.
Agree with PPs, it is such an overused name anyhow, and it sucks as a standalone. It's also SOOOO boring and has no substance. I just cannot find anything to like about this name.
My son is two and he has FOUR friends in our play group named Ellie. Two Eleanors, one Elizabeth and one stand alone Ellie. It's a cute name, but it's a bit trite. I also feel bad for the little girl whose full name is Ellie. It's cute when you're two, but it's not so cute when you're thirty and you have to put it on a resume.
If the -Ly, -long e ending is what is appealing to you, would you consider
Alison for Allie? Abigail for Abby? Vivian for viviy? Marilyn for marly? Bailey? Evelyn for evie? Grace for Gracie?

This is exactly why I couldn't go through with the name Eloise. I hate the nickname Ellie, and as expected, everyone I told said they loved it and "can't wait to call her Ellie." NOPE.
My DH wanted to use Ellie as a stand alone name but I didn't think it would age well or sound professional enough. I liked Elsie (throwback to the 1920/30s) but he didn't.
I'd pick a longer name out of the suggested ones so far if you like Ellie.
One of my dearest friend's name is Ellie. Although she does have a more formal, legal name, she has gone only as Ellie her entire life. She is in her mid 30's and has a very professional career. She has never thought about going by Eleanor. I think it's fine as a stand alone name, especially if you love it. It's not something I would choose, but I don't think of it as trendy or childish.
Re: As a standalone name...
Why not just Elle and Ellie could be her nn
