Circumvallate placenta/Subchorionic bleed/missed miscarraige

Hello all- This is my official introduction. Up until now I've just been reading everybody's stuff but now that I've had some complications and have had minimal luck finding info I thought I'd post my information hopefully to help others & offer support. Possibly meet some people who have gone through this as well. I'm hoping for a good outcome so that I can report this when my pregnancy is finished. Here's my background I'm 35 years old, I currently have a 17 year daughter who was delivered at 36 weeks due to premature rupture of the membranes. She did well, no problems other than jaundice. She weighed 4 lbs 11 oz and only stayed one extra day in the hospital. They never found out why my membranes ruptures early. In 2013 I delivered a heathy little boy full term, no complications. I was monitored during that pregnancy for complications because of my premature delivery in 1998. Fast forward to this past March 2015 I had a routine ultrasound at 17 weeks + 4 days (suppose to be my 3rd baby) and it was found that the baby's heart had stopped (worst experience EVER). I delivered my little guy the next day in the hospital via an elective induction. There was nothing wrong visually with my baby and the pathology report ect came back normal. I decided I wanted to get prego ASAP and luckily ended up prego April 2015 (I'm 14 weeks today). During my 7 week ultrasound with this new pregnancy they found a subchorionic bleed which was small and went away at 11 weeks. Phewwww I was able to breath after that somewhat but than got a call after my nuchal translucency and blood test that they found a POSSIBLE Circumvallate placenta but that everything else looks great. UGH!!!! This is horrible, I'm so anxious. My perinatal specialist didn't even feel this was important to report this to me. My regular OB called and told me about it a few days later. The perinatal specialist said its not a big deal and she's seen tons of people with this but after reading up on it Im still scared. I mean what else can go wrong?!?! Now I'm at risk for a low birth weight baby, placenta abruption and premature labor and a C section. Ugh well anyways I have my anatomy scan Aug 25th and I'm hoping to report that everything is ok and either corrected itself or it was an incorrect diagnoses. Has anyone else had these sort of problems?

Re: Circumvallate placenta/Subchorionic bleed/missed miscarraige

  • Hi Hun. I'm 24 years old and I'm pregnant with my fourth child. I have a 6, 4 and 2.5 year old. I bled excessively Saturday and went straight to the ER. They told be I had a sub. Hemorrhage as well. I'm 11wks3d. I'm terrified. The dr there said I'm having a threatened miscarriage because of this and my baby has a 50/50 chance. I'm waiting for a call from my on to try to get me in as soon as possible. I've never been through this. I've had 3 healthy pregnancies/babies. I don't have a circ. placenta but my hemorrhage has not gone away. Hoping the best for you Hun.
  • Hi, ladies! @atetschner, I'm so sorry for your loss. I had a missed miscarriage, but early on and can't even imagine what your loss was/is like. I admire you for being brave enough to do it all over again! I can only relate to the subchronic hematoma. @Latina211508, did they put you on need rest for now? Praying for both of you ladies and your sweet little ones.

  • @PlainJane8350 thank you so much. The ER DR just told me no sex, exercise, I can't carry anything over 10lbs ( can't carry my youngest). She told me just take it easy. I just made a apt with my obgyn tomorrow so I will see what she says.
  • @Latina211508 I'm so sorry! When I had the bleed they told me no strenuous exercise and no sex. I've read a lot of information on subchorionic bleeds and many women bleed quite a bit and do ok. Praying that yours goes away! Keep us updated.
  • @plainjane8350 I want another baby SO badly!!!! I'll be holding my breath until AT LEAST 19 weeks (after the anatomy scan and past the time I had my prior miscarriage). Hopefully after that I'll be able to breath a little but after being diagnosed with this Circumvallate placenta I'm not sure I'll ever be able to relax during this pregnancy.
  • @atetschner thank you so much love. I really appreciate it. I'm just hoping for the best and trying to stay positive. I will definitely keep you ladies updated.
  • I had a subcorionic hematoma at 6 weeks that bleed horribly off and on for about two weeks. I was on bedrest until 11 weeks when it finally absorbed itself. It was beyond scary as I also had a miscarriage at 10 weeks 4 months prior to getting pregnant again. I'm now 28 weeks pregnant with twins and everything is going great! I know it's hard but try to relax and have faith that it will go away on its own without any complications. Rest and take care of yourself and that little one! Wishing you the best!
  • Hi ladies I just wanted to update. I saw my ob on Tuesday and baby is healthy with a HB of 158. She said she's sees nothing to be concerned about especially because I stopped bleeding. She also said its about less than a 5%chance of miscarrying. I'm so happy my baby is ok. I see her in 4 weeks. Thank you for the positive comments. My EDD is officially Feb 8th. My only restrictions are I can't carry anything over 15lbs which includes not being able to hold my youngest at all.
  • @Latina211508 YAY good news!!!! I'm guessing they will reevaluate if the sch has gone away in 4 weeks. I hope the weeks go by fast for you!! I have to wait 4 1/2 to confirm the diagnosis of Circumvallate placenta and whether it's resolved or not. The days could not go by any slower!!!!! Well good luck to you and I hope everything goes smooth from here on out!
  • Congratulations! Did they put you on pelvic rest?
  • @atetschner thank you so much Hun. Right, these 4 weeks are going to drag. I hope they go fast for you and I hope the best for you!! ❤️
  • @PlainJane8350 thank you!!! No, I'm not on pelvic rest at all. She just told me to take it easy these next few weeks. Then she pointed out not carry my daughter at all or anything over 15lbs. If I start bleeding again to make an apt immediately. But that was it. Even though my husband and I are going to wait to have sex. I'm just still little concerned and want to be careful. But thank you love.
  • Im currently 20 weeks and was also just diagnosed with a Circumvallate placenta. I was referred to the high risk specialist because they thought it could be amniotic bands(which can cause amputations) and the doctors sounded happy that it was the placenta issue instead. The mfm doctor said we were pretty low risk and my ob said she has another patient right now with the same diagnosis that's currently 37 weeks and doing fine.

I go back to mfm every 4 weeks to monitor her growth. I'm trying not to worry, but all of the information out there about iugr and placental abruptions are really scary.

My mom shared this website with me. It has a lot of positive outcome stories! https://community.babycenter.com/post/a27904317/circumvallate_placenta?cpg=1

  • Sorry about the above posts. I cant even figure out how to delete them. :( Im not sure why it wouldnt post my entire message fro my cell phone. I decided to hop on my laptop and see if it'll work from here.

Overall my appointment went well. We are having a little boy! =) I do not have circumvallate placenta after all and no evidence of a SCH. The original SCH self resolved and I was worried I'd get another one. so that gives me some relief however they were a little concerned with my cervical length. They did not give me any restrictions at this point. They said they like the cervical length to be above 3 and mine was 2.77. They want to reevaluate next week. I'm not sure if I should start stressing about this. What are your lady's thoughts? Anyone have a similiar issue/story?
  • Mine started at 2.9, grew up to as high as 3.4, then started shortening again. When it got back down to 2.9 I asked for (vaginal) progesterone (just in case. We had a loss unrelated to my cervix, but it made me paranoid). It got down to 2.6 and they put me on "couch potato rest." Basically just keeping direct pressure off of my cervix as much as possible. I had a LEEP in '05 so I knew mine would be short. The good news is that the cervix is dynamic and can be short, but still strong. Congratulations on getting rid of your SCH, mine was a pesky like devil, and your baby boy!
  • OB called me today and put me on pelvic rest until they reevaluate. What's the progesterone do?
  • This app sucks for me half of the time, too. Here's my e-mail if you ever want to message me directly:

I was put on (vaginal) progesterone because my cervix started shortening. I know that they put some women on it in the first trimester to support their pregnancies until their placenta kicks in, though. I found really helpful info about progesterone (and the different methods of administration) on March of Dimes' website.

I was on pelvic rest, too. All of this stuff is an inconvenience, but I'd rather be safe than sorry now.
  • Thanks! Yes, I here you. Much better safe than sorry. It's only 10 months. Your due soon aren't you?
  • Yes, ma'am, September 27th! You?!
  • I still have a ways but I'm halfway there, January 18th.
  • It'll be here before you know it, I promise. :x
  • Update

Saw the perinatal specialist yesterday for another measurement of my cervix and it is now at 2.9, no funneling and cervix is closed.

I also saw my OB and she said she's not too concerned. She said we will do another measurement in 4 weeks and check on how the baby is growing at that time as well. She said in the mean time, no restrictions but don't overdo it.

Overall great news for me and my little boy. I might just get my rainbow baby after all. I'm starting to feel hopeful and excited.
  • That's great news, congratulations to you two!
  • Update
I had another Dr appointment to day to check my cervix and to measure babe. Cervix is now measuring 3.5 and baby is right on track for growth at 1 lb 5 oz. Thank God!!! I won't be getting my cervix measured again and I will get one more ultrasound to check baby's growth at 32 weeks.
