Kick count taking too long should i be worried?

I've tried twice now to do my kick count. I begin timing on my first kick and stop on my tenth. I was told to go to ER if it takes longer than 1 hour to get to 10. I've gotten as close as 8.

  • Every doctor gives different information on "kick counting" based on what your saying I wouldn't be concerned. My doctor told me as long as I feel 10 kicks in a 24 hour period then there is no concerns. I don't even count them, I just make sure to be aware that he is moving periodically throughout the day.

  • My doctor told me 10 within the first 2 hours of waking up. I always get that with a half hour. However the other morning my little guy started out very active and wasn't as active the rest of the day and I busy figured he was tired and didn't get too alarmed because I still felt him. Have your SO touch your belly and count kicks. My hubby can feel out little guy move sometimes when I don't. I would day no movement or a dramatic decrease means you should call.
  • Did you have a snack or some juice? That usually get my LO on the move.
  • I agree that every doctor will give different guidelines. My kick count is suppose to be 10 movements in two hours.
Also, I find my little guy has a couple of really active days followed by days where he is pretty lazy in there. Maybe your LO is just going through a lazy stage. But, I'd say with any worry, give your office a call and just speak with a nurse.
Drink some juice, give them a call, and let us know how it goes!

  • My doc said to kick count after meals. Though my baby is most active when I lie down to sleep. Idk, I feel less organized about counting this time around. I think if you are concerned it is always a good idea to call your doctor.
  • I've never been asked to do a kick count and this is my third baby. I would only worry if she stopped moving for 24 hours, because my hyper baby moves a lot, but has bouts of what I call napping and she won't move for a couple of hours.
  • At my last appt she said something about 5 kicks in an hour and do that a few times a day if I have time. I honestly haven't consciously counted at all. He is so active all the time and it seems like if I try to sit there and count he quits moving. He's most active at night as well when I'm laying in bed. one evening he wasn't moving, and I was only worried because earlier in the day I had poked myself with a needle that had been used on cows (whoops), so I asked my boyfriend to put his hand on my stomach because baby ALWAYS moves when he does. Instantly regretted doing that because then baby wouldn't quit moving and I couldn't fall asleep for an hour!
  • There are a LOT of varying opinions on the 'right' amount of kicks.  My Dr. says 10 before lunch and 10 after. For me personally, as long as I feel him moving around fairly regularly I am not concerned.

My Dr. did say that as we get further along the movements may not be as big because they are running out of room, so even a slight brush counts.

10 in one hour? My baby never moves that much, my Dr said 6 within 2 hours. The little punk usually waits until the last few minutes of my two hours to give me the movements lol. That being said, you know your baby better than anyone, if anything feels off or you are worried, go in. Momma knows best.
  • PP have mentioned when they most often feel the baby move and this is what my doctor told me to focus on. LOs have cycles and schedules that offer a bit of of consistency--- I always feel him most in the morning (either kicking me to wake up or to go get my coffee) and at night when I lay down. I do feel him throughout the day, but not as consistently and his kicks are not at hard. I find I feel him moving like a lava lamp some days and full on karate others. So, I remind myself that's normal for his life on the inside.

My new dr was really awesome last week and made sure to let me know my options if I wasn't feeling baby and to not hesitate to check into his office or go to the hospital and they'd call the nurse.
  • My clinic also doesn't do kick counts. Instead, my doc said just to be aware if baby is moving less than what I'm normally accustomed to. At 33 weeks now, baby is doing more moving around/shifting positions vs. actual kicking. I find my baby is most active at night when I'm trying to go to bed ... he or she likes to kick me on the side I'm lying on, of course!
  • My guidelines are 10 movements in 2 hours and to track between 7-11 pm when babies are most active.
  • I wouldn't worry too much. I'm 34 weeks and my baby is more at the stage where I notice him moving more than kicking. As long as you feel movement then I wouldn't worry
  • If you think the baby is moving less than normal, I'd call the doctor. I noticed less movements and weaker movements the other day and called. The nurse asked if the baby had moved 10 times in the last hour or two, and he had, so she said I didn't need to come in. She told me the movements will become weaker now that the baby has less room, but we should still feel movement.

There was a thread on the August board about reduced movement, and the mom waited to get checked because she could still feel some movement, but it was less than normal. Her baby didn't make it and she regretted waiting a few days to get checked. It's scary, and I'm sorry to mention it, but better safe than sorry!
