Breastfeeding

engorgement

My baby is now almost 4 days old. My milk came in day 2 and has been in almost 48 hours. I'm still super engorged. When he feeds, he makes my breast softer, but definitely doesn't empty out all the fullness.  I was worried about hand expressing because I didn't want to signal to my body to make even more milk, but now that I've been so engorged for 48 hours, I worry that it's going to effect my supply. Do I need to be hand expressing after he eats?

Re: engorgement

  • Your supply still has plenty of time to work itself out. I would suggest to hand express and ease your breast. If I still felt engorged after a feed I would normally hand express the rest out. No need to cause a plugged duct. Those are pretty bad. Good luck!
  • You can also jump in a hot shower and allow the heat to release some of the extra milk if your not worried about saving it. Cabbage leaves, cold and deveined in your bra should help too. Just be careful not to express too much like you said, you don't want to trigger oversupply.

  • I produced a lot of milk after each of my 3 kids. I had to pump after each feeding which was every 2 hours.
