Re: Glucose test concerns go in here

  • Just found out I failed the three hour!  Boo!  Off to the dietitian I go!

BTW....before my three hour they told me I could have water and straight black coffee.  They also didn't limit what I could drink during the three hour waiting period as they took blood.

  • I failed my 1 hour this morning (170) and will be going in for the 3 hour tomorrow morning. Oh, the joy!

All I can think is that I regret passing up any junk food this far in pregnancy, if I have to legitimately cut it out now. Wahhh.
  • Just to report back, I passed my 3-hour. Feeling grateful, as I have a few other medical issues on the go right now, and ice cream helps me cope. :). Good luck to the rest of you, and, to all those who don't pass, I admire in advance the sacrifices you will make for your healthy pregnancy. You're all great moms. :)
  • For what it's worth, I was told to fast from midnight on so I had 3 hardboiled eggs with salt and apple cider vinegar around 11:40pm. My first draw was around 8:50am. Interestingly, the lab let me do whatever I wanted between draws - the tech said some people even leave and come back!! They'd just prefer that we be back 10 minutes before the next draw so it's not late. I didn't have anywhere to go (I was dropped off by my husband) so I'd sit for a bit then go walk around or stand outside while browsing/texting on my phone, etc. They didn't deny me having any water so I'd sip my water bottle I brought.

I really felt fine during the whole thing. A little tired halfway through, but not nauseous or light-headed or anything. I actually thought the hour between draws went by quickly since I got to be outside when I felt like it, sometimes just standing under some shade on my phone. I have 4 great veins on my arms that techs always love because they have options. They didn't even have to do the same vein twice!
  • I took my 1 hour Thursday and Friday they called me and said I scored a 130 and their cut off was 130 so they want me to do the 3 hour. I am frustrated bc yes it was on the high in but technically I made the cut off?! I keep reading how people get really sick and miserable during the 3 hour and dreading having my blood drawn 3 times!! I guess I wonder how necessary it is to do it....obviously I would do it for the health of my baby but I didn't technically fail?!
  • I also ate a banana 1 hour prior which prob wasn't the greatest of choices. :((
  • I had my one hour on Friday and failed by a long shot.  The cutoff was 140 and I got a 175.  I go back for my 3 hour on Tuesday.  I passed the one hour with my last three pregnancies and am really hoping to pass the three hour this time.
  • For the 1 hr...would it skew results to eat a bagel w/ PB before? I heard no carbs the night before, no sugar the morning of...I'm going to have my mocha creamer though! My dr said to just eat normally... but I"m nervous!!!
  • My Ob has never given me any restrictions for the hour test. However I got my highest ever at 124 and I have no idea if I passed.
  • I just got the call that I failed the one hour with a 156 and the cutoff is 139. Going next Wednesday for the three hour test. Based on this thread I am not looking forward to it.

  • I learned today that I failed the 3 hour and have to see a high risk doctor in the next couple weeks. So bummed! But I would rather work hard the next couple months to control it than to have complications.
  • Just wanted to share that even if you fail the one hour miserably, there is still hope.

I got a 175 on the 1 hour and just passed the 3 hour easily.  So relieved to not have to deal with GD.

  • How did you ladies feel after drinking the glucose drink??
  • @mommabear2410 The 1-hour drink wasn't horrible. It was like flat soda to me. The 3-hour one was syrupy sweet and gross, but I just relaxed and drank it in long sips. I felt fine after both. Neither really affected me negatively.

Thank you so much for this post. I failed the one hour with a 156 and am going Thursday for the three hour test. I've been worried about it since I got the call. Even though I know it's not the end of the world.

  • I have to do the three hour test. Failed by one point on my doctors scale 70-140. But my question is I have to fast for 12 hrs, what was your last snack?! Not eating until lunch scares me and I thought the 1 hours test was kinda mean. The baby has never freaked out like that and then for hours after constant movement. I felt awful she couldn't sleep or get comfy again:(
  • Super nervous about my 1 hour test today. Only brightside will be the US in the hour between blood draw to see my munchkin ;) any tips or advice to calm myself down??
  • I did the 3 hour test yesterday. The drink made me super nauseous, especially on an empty stomach. Then I could feel when I crashed about an hour later. I was so tired, I had to go out to my car and lay down. I just got the call this morning that I failed 2 of the 4 readings, so now I have to go in and talk to the diabetes education team, and work through a diet with a dietician. I know it's not the worst thing in the world, but being 31 weeks with twins, is enough to stress about, and I wasn't really excited to get this news. But we will get through this! After all, it's the home stretch! :)
  • @LLynde5 the night before my 3-hour, I had 3 hard-boiled eggs with some apple cider vinegar and a pinch of salt at ~11:45pm. My first blood draw was ~8:48am and that fasting level ended up being 79. I passed all the readings for the 3-hour.
  • I have to take my one-hour test tomorrow at 12:45. My doctor told me that I didn't have to fast, but I'm not a big breakfast eater, so when I do eat breakfast, it usually consists of either an apple, or a bagel with cream cheese and some fruit. Should I just go ahead and fast then? I'm so nervous! I don't want to fail! :((

  • Big Fat Loser...or at least that's how i feel failed the 1 hour, go in for my 3 hour Tuesday. Anyone else weep in their car alone after getting the news? I know it's not a diagnosis but its still tough news to get.
  • I hope you all see the silver lining in being diagnosed at 28-30 weeks. At least you haven't been doing this since day 1...

Today was my turn to take the 1 hour test. I did not fast. I ate my regular foods for the most part just skipped having too many sweets. I had some scrambled eggs and a big glass of water for breakfast then had my glucose drink. I thought it tasted just fine. A little weird but not bad at all. I did struggle a tiny bit to get it all down in the five minutes cause I'm usually a sipper not a chugger. It didn't make me feel weird or sick or anything so here's hoping! I guess I'll know in a few days if not fasting was good or bad. Fingers crossed!
  • @j1d, so glad to hear you say it didn't make you vomit. I chugged mine down just fine, and feel like some sort of weird freak for being able to. I love sugar, and I miss it very much...

Nope. No vomit :) For which I am extremely grateful. I was kinda scared and sort of psyching myself out about it so I decided to get all logical and compared grams of sugar in things I commonly eat or drink and was all- this is fine! I'll be fine! I don't know if the science is at all sound, but who cares cause mentally it worked like a charm!
  • Right! It's seriously like a venti Frap! Just that you can't sip it!

  • Took my 1-hr this morning too. Nervous for the results! I ate normal (PB bagel and coffee w/ flavored creamer...not too much sugar!) and didn't mind the drink too much either. I actually took a nap during the wait (stayed up too late watching the debate, and had to get the test done before work this morning)...the lab had a nice room with recliner chairs and everything...:)

Do we find out our test results at our next dr appt?

@kim1228 my doc made it sound like no news was good news.  Typically my office has an automated test result call line that notifies you when your results come back normal. I've never been tested for anything that didn't come back normal so I actually have no idea what the protocol is for bad news! Since my next appointment is in 2 weeks though, if it is bad news, I'm cool with living in ignorant bliss for a few more days and enjoying my doughnuts while it lasts. Although I figure if baby or I were actually in danger I'll get a call before then.

@kim1228 I got a call about failing my 1-hr the very next morning. The day after I took my 3-hour, I waited for a call until the afternoon, then I called the doctor's office asking of they had my results and they did! I passed, which might be why they didn't call me immediately (no news is good news etc). They seemed to have the results in about 24 hrs.
  • I failed the 1 hr by 7 points and failed the 3 hr :( start checking blood sugar four times a day and meet dietician Wednesday

I failed the one hour by 2 points which I'm not happy about because now I have to do the 3 hour and even the 1 hour made me horribly ill with fever and everything... not enjoying thinking what might happen with the 3 hour.

I'm confused though... I've always been HYPOglycemic, I haven't gained a ton of weight, in the last month and a half alone I've only gained a pound maybe 2 and was on the cusp of underweight pre-pregnancy, no family history of GD or even high blood sugar (full family of hypoglycemics), and the only sugar I really have is in my one cup of coffee a day and fruit (and no, not excessively, I'm talking 1/2 a peach with my toast or oatmeal in the morning and some blueberries or a banana for dessert in the evening). Did anyone else with similar circumstances fail the 1 hour test?
  • 2 Sticks in to my 3 hour and I am over this. I just want to take a nap. I am so tired/bored.

I got my test results back today on my 1 hour test and I passed! Yay! 126 with 135 being the cut off. I did not change my diet before the test, I didn't fast the night before or day of and I had scrambled eggs for breakfast. So I'm thinking if your doctor is saying don't fast then don't fast! I didn't get any kind of nauseous, dizzy or sick at all and I wonder if it's because I was eating my normal foods on my normal schedule.
