8 week injections - crying inconsolably

My DD had her 8 week injections this morning and has been incredibly unsettled since. She sleeps for maybe 10 mins (lying on my shoulder) then wakes up screaming. If I try to put her down at any point, the screaming starts again. I'm guessing it's just repercussions from her injections, but does anyone have any advice on how to settle her? I was advised not to give any baby calpol/ Tylenol unless she gets a fever

Re: 8 week injections - crying inconsolably

  • Why did they say no tylenol? I think I'd give some but that's just me.

  • Poor baby. If she's that uncomfortable I would give Tylenol.

My pedi told me not to give DD any medication before a fever as well but i did! Every 6 hours for 48 hours, only missed the last dose

She was a lot calmer with the medicine so idk if you'll want to go against your pedi like i did

    Good luck
  • They said she's too young for it...but she was 2 months y'day and all the instructions on the pack say it's fine (as long as born after 37 weeks and over 4kg...which she was). I'm going to give it a go and hope it works... Thanks for the advice!
  • My appt is Tuesday and pediatrician said to buy Tylenol and have it in hand as it will make baby more comfortable after. .. We are on a delayed / spaced out schedule so the shot she will have might be different than what your LO has... Maybe call and let them know she is having a hard time and see what Dr says?

My LO had her shots this afternoon too. She is very sleepy but when she wakes up she is so uncomfortable and won't stop crying. It's breaking my heart. How long will this last?
  • Tylenol for sure! The lowest dose did the trick for my babies. No point in them being miserable when a solution is out there. My pediatrician recommended it.
  • I went at 6 weeks and they said give her panadol (not sure what it is for usa maybe Tylenol?) if she gets fever or cranky and unsettled as the needles can cause soreness and panadol will take the edge off and calm them down.
  • Did anyone give Tylenol before? My LO gets his shots tomorrow & I'm trying to decide if I should give it before or wait till after.
  • I did give Tylenol about an hour before and then 2 doses after, about 4 hours apart. My LOs tolerated the vaccines fairly well and were fine afterward, other than being a bit sleepier than usual. It was our NICU nurse (she was close to 70 and had been working as a nurse for 40 years!) who recommended we do the dose before. I'm glad we did.
  • My ped says not to give it before. When you get to your appt they will take your babies temperature. They won't give vaccines if they have a fever. If you give Tylenol before the appt it could be masking a fever.

  • Update from me - I gave DD the calpol/Tylenol and it worked a treat - followed the instructions on pack and she was finally able to settle and sleep. She was a bit restless throughout the night, but at least she wasn't screaming!
  • We were in the same boat! Our doctor said "you should always avoid giving Tylenol if you can..." Very helpful. But she was good for a couple of hours, but then at 4 on the dot, she was inconsolable. After 2 hours of rocking her at the end of the bed, under the ceiling fan, my husband went out and got infant Motrin (even though I said tylenol, silly husbands). It was almost instant! She was still extra snugly, but the crying stopped and she was calm enough to eat, which calmed her more I think. Just a note, if possible, get the dye free, if there is any puke or spit up (there will be down the road) it won't stain!

Many other moms said Tylenol before shots, I guess I'll be trying that next time! This time I half fed her right before the appointment, a and gave her a bottle after. Seemed to help the initial crying to get her settled to go home.

Good luck to those who haven't done them yet! Phew!
