Trying to Get Pregnant

IUD Removal + Conception

Hey Ladies,

I'm fairly new to the community, so here's a little bit about myself. I am a recent grad and I have a 3 year old daughter. I work at a HS with Special Ed students.

I recently went to the ER because I was experiencing a lot of pain in my lower abdomen area, turns out I was approx. 4 weeks pregnant while I had an IUD in place. I ended up losing my little bean. Since then, I've been trying again with hubby but I have some mixed emotions and feelings about the whole situation.

I was wondering how long after removing an IUD some of you had to keep trying until actually getting pregnant, if you don't mind sharing.

Thanks so much and I hope to get to know some of your stories and sharing mine along our journey.

Re: IUD Removal + Conception

  • I am so sorry for your loss. That must have been very shocking.

Keep in mind that this is a board about trying to get pregnant, so many of us have never been pregnant if we are trying for our first (this includes myself). There may be someone here with experience in this, but their fertility has no bearin on yours. Everyone is different.

Are you temping and charting your cycle? This really helps to answer a lot of questions because you can confirm ovulation and time as in the fertile window a bit more accurately. Most people on here use Fertility Friend for this.

    Best of luck!

*** warning: MC and DS mentioned ***

I had my IUD removed at the end of March and received my BFP only a month later. This then ended in a MC, and honestly, my DH and I believe that my body just wasn't ready to carry the pregnancy to term due to having the IUD in place for the entire five year duration; I have a DS who is nearly six years old and had the IUD placed shortly after his birth. I am now in my second month post D&C (first full after AF) and am hoping my body is ready, but am still quite nervous given what I went through the past few months.

I've read and read and read about the female body during the IUD phase and after, and honestly everything that I've read just states that every woman's body reacts differently and you have to give it time. Temping and charting is a must, to be sure that you're ovulating and that you aren't just 'guessing' as to what you're body is doing.

Good luck and I hope your time here is short!

  • Some people ovulate right away and conceive quickly. Other people do not conceive that soon.

Each person is different. It can take a healthy couple up to a year to conceive.

Good luck and I am sorry for your loss.
    Thank God for Raid.

  • I had my IUD removed on Monday. All the research I've done has just told me what the above two posters have said: every body reacts differently. Everything from ovulating immediately to not ovulating for weeks or even months can be "normal".

Are you temping? I started temping the week before my IUD was removed so I could see when I ovulate. So far, nothing yet for me, but it has only been 3 days after all. My doctor told me it's possible to get pregnant right away after the IUD but that doesn't mean that I will. She said temping is the best way to know what's going on with your body.

Right now I'm just trying to be patient and let my body do it's thing. Good luck!

  • I'm so sorry for your loss.

I've had an IUD removed twice. The first time I got pregnant right away without even having a period after removal and this most recent time, I'm still waiting for my period or to ovulate after 3+ months. You just never know. Good luck!

  • I am sorry for your loss. Sometimes it takes losing a pregnancy that you thought wasn't even a possibility (with the IUD in) to make you realize how badly you wanted it in the first place.

Was it Mirena with hormones or Paraguard?

In 12/03 I was on the hormone patch, removed it and was pregnant by 1/04. Baby born 9/04. Had Paraguard put in at my PP appt. in 11/04.

In 5/09 I had my Paraguard removed and was pregnant by 6/09. Baby born 3/10. Had another Paraguard put in at my PP appt. in 5/10

In 4/15 I removed my Paraguard and was pregnant by 5/15. We did lose that one though at 9w2d. Currently still TTC.

I always had my Paraguards removed at CD1or CD2 because it makes it easier/less painful. Would always get pregnant before having a period. But that's just the beauty of hormone-free. No adjustment period. You keep ovulating in the background just as you always have.

It can always take time for your body to adjust. Do get yourself a copy of TCOYF and start charting your BBT in the fertility friend app. It can help rule out so many issues and save you from unnecessary tests should you need to go see a doctor later on for help.
  • Hi.. I may not have a story to add here but I just wanted to say I'm sorry for your loss. I've had two losses last year so I can relate to your pain.
  • Hi! I'm new as well! I removed my iud last month and we are now ttc this will be our first time trying! We have been together for 10 years and now we are finally ready! I just recently started tempting and charting with the fertility friend app. I like it it's very helpful. I did get my period the same day my iud was removed and I have been checking my CM and and temp and it has been we watery and temp has been low. So I'm not sure yet if I have ovulated but according to what I've read if the CM is watery you are the most fertile. So sorry for your loss ! And I hope you get good news soon!
  • I am so sorry for your loss.

I also want to second the temping and charting. I got my IUD removed in May, and I quickly realized I have no idea what my body is doing. I wish I had started it from the beginning, because I feel like I kind of wasted time guessing, if that makes sense.

  • I'm sorry for your loss.

I had my IUD removed at the end of June and had my period about a week later. We're currently in our first month of ttc. I haven't confirmed o yet, but I'm only on CD13. I'm hoping things are back to "normal" after only 1 month, but have a realistic expectation that it may take longer to adjust. Give yourself time and keep charting and temping in the meantime. Good luck to you!!
  • Thank you everyone for the tips, advice and best wishes. I did not start charting or following my cycle. It's been about 3 weeks that i had my IUD removed and I haven't taken a test. I will start using the app and hopefully it happens soon. I realized I wanted a second child now that my life is in a better place than when I had my first. I've always wanted to give her a sibling or two but with this loss I feel a little pressured now. It's been stressful to try and recover from a loss and I never thought it would happen with the Mirena. Fingers crossed for myself and everyone else.
