How much does your baby weigh so far?

I had the anatomy US done yesterday. I was 18 weeks, 6 days yesterday and I was told the baby is 10 ounces right now and in the 15th percentile range. Needless to say I am so happy that my baby boy is HEALTHY since he was originally a twin and I lost the other baby around 12 weeks however I'm just wondering if 10 ounces (a little over half a pound) is a lot right now and will my baby be big? And what size are your babies?!

Re: How much does your baby weigh so far?

  • There's no way to tell how big your baby will be based on your 20 week measurement.
10 ounces is in the normal range.
  • My baby boy was 12 oz at 19w 5d and was measuring 20 weeks exactly. Wasn't told a percentile but from what I understand they go through growth spurts at different times and the measurements are not super accurate so I wouldn't try to decipher now if you will have a big baby or not.

Ummmm, so this is my first, and at my A/S at 20W5D, baby boy was weighing in at 1 lb 1 oz. I didn't ask about a percentile, but the UT said avg would be about 12 oz at that stage. The doc isn't too concerned, saying that babies hit growth spurts at diff times and he may not continue to grow at the same rate--he did say that genetics play a role. My birth weight was 8 lb 6 oz and MH was 9 lb 5 oz, so I'm pretty sure I'll be having a larger baby.

At my 20 week appointment (almost 2 weeks ago) she weighed 12 ounces. I have zero idea if your baby will be big... Hell I don't know if my baby will be big!
  • I just had a scan at 22w5d and baby was approx 1lb and 25cm in length head to toe. He was measuring above average on everything and when I asked the doctor if this meant I'd have a big baby she said no, not necessarily, things may change, it's too early to tell. At the 36 week scan they will have a better idea of the actual birth weight and size.

Even at 36 weeks it's plus or minus 2 pounds. So that's not even accurate.
The last few weeks of pregnancy are when babies pack on the weight. So it all depends on when you give birth too.

Like @TacoSarah, I was told I would be evaluated at 36 weeks to get a better idea of baby's size closer to birth. My OB said they would factor in proportions (head size, length, etc.) in order to decide if a c-section will be necessary for a larger baby. I'm hoping to avoid that bc of recovery time, but obviously, I'll have to be fine with whatever is safest for baby and me both.

Thanks @Pontot31. I don't know that he was saying that they would completely nix the idea of a VB, just that it would give them a better idea of possible course of action. I may have misspoken. But I will definitely keep that advice in mind :-). As I mentioned, I don't want a CS but I'm also terrified to push out a huge baby

You can also say no to those later scans unless there is a medical reason. I would be afraid of a doctor who just mentioned that. Too many of them have agendas and like women to give birth on their schedule.
Your body won't grow a baby you can't birth. The baby's position has more to do with its size. If it's poorly positioned even the smallest baby will struggle to come out.
  • Baby was measuring small at my a/s but I am measuring big. DD was 9lbs 10 oz. I think this baby is just hitting the growth spurt late.
  • 6 pounds.

No but really, idk. She was 9 oz at my 19 week a/s I think.

That makes me feel a bit better (or worse, haha), @Pontot31. I'm not too worried about the doctor. It's actually a group of doctors, so he may not even be delivering my baby. My aunt is a neonatal nurse (formerly at the same hospital I will be giving birth) and told me today that they always do that scan at 36 weeks. I think if anything, he was trying to make me feel better about the fact that baby is measuring large so far. He just wanted my mind to be at ease that everything would continue to be monitored and was encouraging me not to freak out.
  • I was told mine was about 9oz at 18 weeks, but like a lot of PPs mentioned, these measurements are just rough estimations & don't really mean much. What really matters is that everything is proportional.

  • Mine was 13oz at 20w, but I'll just reiterate that at this point it has no major effect on how big your baby will be at birth.

  • My friend was told she was going to have a tiny 6 pounder. Comes to find out she pushed out a 10 pound 12 oz. just like ultrasounds can give the wrong gender at time. It's is possible that the baby can give or take a certain weight. We won't fully know till that baby hits the scale.

My nugget was to be 11 oz.

13 oz at 20 week scan.

I am guessing I will have a larger kid because DS was 10lbs at birth and usually one large baby means another will follow. Ouch :(

Our little guy was 15 OZ at my 20 week scan, and everything was measuring about 2-3 weeks further along, but who really knows? The tech didn't seem to think it was anything out of the ordinary.
  • Mine was 9 oz at the anatomy scan yesterday at 19w2d
  • At my anatomy scan on June 15th he was 12oz. I was 19w4d at that time, but he was measuring about a week ahead.

Mine was estimated at about three quarters of a pound (12 ounces) at my a/s, but there is a wide range of what's considered normal at this point ( and from here on out).
  • Keep in mind it's not exact.. My baby boy at my appointment was 14oz.. +/-.. It's not an exact weight.. But I think 10oz is ok.. As long as the baby is healthy I think everything should be fine!!
  • 11 oz this morning at 20w6d. The Scan said baby was measuring closer to 20 weeks even, but they didn't change my due date, so it must be within range. The Dr said all measurements were normal. I'm just hoping this baby takes after my head size and not my husband's! He has a big head now, but was born very small due to his mother being addicted to methadone, so we have no idea of what his birth size would have been healthy. I was on my way to being an 8 pounder, but was born 3 weeks early breech. My had a smaller babies (I was biggest at 7lbs 10, my sister was smallest at 6lbs 10), but she's tiny, so I imagine her body was like "nope, gotta have this baby now, it's getting too big!"

I'm going unmedicated at a birth center (if my body and baby cooperate) so I'm hoping this baby is nice and normal sized!
  • At 18w5d my baby was measuring big at 12 oz. I wouldn't be too concerned with their weight until they actually get here.
  • At my 19w appointement when they did the anatomy scan they said he weighed 10.5 oz and was in the 45th percentile.

  • At my 19 week appointment my baby was 13 oz. I haven't heard from my obgyn since. I'm guessing my baby is healthy. Btw, I'm 20 weeks 2 day.
  • 12oz at 19weeks 4days ultrasound
  • 13 oz at 20 weeks :) I'm excited! He's so adorable! :D I'm still waiting for the official reading of my anatomy scan, but the tech seemed unworried about what she saw and I'm stoked!
  • I was never told how much my baby weighed at anatomy scan. Is this something my midwife will discuss with me at my next appointment? Haven't seen her since before my scan
  • At 19w 4d my baby weighed 14 ounces and we found out were having a boy I'm happy and excited my baby's healthy but its weird cuz iv only gained 5 pounds the whole pregnancy and I'm only showing at night after eating all day everyone tells me I don't look 5 months but I think it's because I'm tall and the baby has a lot of room in there ,its also my first baby :x anyone else having a similar experience
  • When the Dr say your due date on track at 20 5d but on the ultrasound at the top it says gestational age 21w 5d an baby was 15 oz already at 20 5d does that mean I was technically almost 22 weeks and not 21?
  • @issysoph56 Our ultrasound tech mentioned it offhandedly.  I'm sure you could ask at your next appointment though!

This!!! mine is 12 ounces and I lost 8 pounds during the first trimester and only gained half that back.  I'm tall too so I just started getting a little bump

No. It means that's the way the baby was measuring at that time. It could have just had a growth spurt. 20 week scans are not indicative of how big your baby and are not always correct with measuring how far along you are. The early dating scans are best for that.

3 weeks ago at my 20 week scan they told me she was 11oz.
  • I had my a/s on Tuesday, at 20w4d. Baby was weighing in at 12oz, which I was told is the 37th percentile. The doctor says that if, which is a big if, he stays in that range, he'd be around 7lbs at birth. I'm not counting on that because the likeliness of him staying in the same percentile this whole pregnancy is probably slim to none.

  • At the 20 week anatomy scan they said baby was 14oz. :)

But then I heard recently from the woman who teaches my birthing class that ultrasound can be off by quite a bit, when baby is larger she said it could be off he 2 whole pounds! how crazy is that?!

  • Yesterday at my "20 week" anatomy scan (really 19+4), our little one was estimated to weigh 10 oz and was measuring one day ahead (19+5). They didn't measure from toe to head though, they took measurements of the femur, head circumference, belly circumference, etc.

I was told this would be our last ultrasound, except that little one decided not to shift position from being head down facing my back, so I have to go in again within 2-4 weeks to get a few last photos of the heart and profile. It seems like it varies a lot how many ultrasounds are recommended...
  • Just had my anatomy scan today and I'm 19 weeks 5 days. Baby weighs 12 oz. And if I may have an AW moment baby is healthy with 10 fingers and 10 toes. Was giving us the thumbs up with both hands.
