Cohen is a bit of a loaded name and many people find it insensitive. You might want to reconsider.

Cohen is my maiden name - it's bizarre as a first name in my opinion

    Are you jewish?

No I am not Jewish, I ran across it on Pinterest and just liked it, What do you mean by loaded? I seriously don't know of any negative's with the name Cohen? I'm confused....

  • I'm not the commenter who said it was loaded but they're right. Some jewish people will find the name offensive. The daily beast article (again) should clarify things for you.

I think less people will think it's offensive than think it's ignorant.

Like I said, it'd be like me naming my kid Mohammed because I thought it sounded cool.

Enlighten me ... why exactly is this a loaded and insensitive name?
I love it. (Grabs popcorn) snarky comments about a name choice that in no way affects you. I mean really. A good friend of my husbands in law school was named Cohen. It is a beautiful name. Maybe she is Jewish. Maybe she is paying tribute to someone who was. Who cares. Adolf, that would be insensitive. Plenty of Hispanic people name their children Jesus. No one gets worked up. Of course I understand the catholic faith is strong. Still. And better get used to it. Appears it is on a few countries top 100. ETA: Spelling mistakes
You post your baby name ideas on the internet, get ready to be flamed. That's just how it works.

@inomniaparatus pretty much covered it. The name Cohen has a lot of meaning in the jewish faith as it denotes the priestly caste/lineage. If you're Jewish and you want to go with it, well then you know why other people might find it's use ignorant, but if you're not jewish and just thought it was cool, well, now you know how others might perceive it.   Names are often our first impression we make on people, and with our increasingly globalized and connected world, it's important to keep other cultures and peoples in mind, so that we may be respectful of them.

  • Mohammed is actually a very very popular name.
  • As someone Jewish and from a Hispanic populated place, I don't think Cohen or Jesus or Mohammad are anything offensive at all. I know plenty of Jesus' and Mohammad's already. To me, it's as offensive as naming your children after yourself or you'd husband (junior or the III), or after a beloved family member (& religious icon). Who cares? A name is only as much as it means to you and your family (as long as the kid isn't made fun of too badly) in which case they'll develop thicker skin.

Think you missed the point. It'd be kind of bizarre for a jewish or catholic girl to name her son Mohammed.

Mine does the same thing! Everyrtime I mention a name he pairs it with our last name and then acts like a 2nd grader making fun of it then will say "nope." Im like, kids will make fun of ANYTHING. Stop it and pick one!

We have a list going, we've gone through maybe 50 names so far.

Girls: Olivia, Abigail, Kiley, Sarah, Kealy. DH likes Bristol and I like Daphne and Freya.

    MN's- Elizabeth

    Boys: Ryan, Benjamin, Luke

    MN's- Tyler, Todd, Micheal

Our DD is Maya Marie and our DS is Samuel Joseph. DS's name is the only family name of all of these, after my grandfather. All of the MN's though are close family names.

I so badly want another girl just because I want to name her. Hahaha

We're Team Green. We've talked about names and may just choose one (already have it in mind) and name our LO that regardless of sex. Or we may go with separate familial names for each sex. Haven't decided.

  • My 5 YO DS is convinced we are having a girl and is picking out names. He has narrowed it down the Little Ruthie or Stella. I have no idea why he thinks girl, I thinks it's because of that Berenstain Bears New Baby book. I have a long list but no certainties right now. I like the idea of waiting and seeing the baby before deciding on the name.

Haha Thats kinda cute! My mother has a chihuahua names Baby Ruthie. :)

We are planning to be team green so I like the idea of waiting too. We have names picked out already (for the most part) but nothing set in stone yet, obviously.

    We like:
boy: Oliver james or Oliver lee (bf wants a jr..but I'm not hip with the whole naming your son with your exact name, you're already passing on the last name)
girl: kennedy grace or Kailey michelle

We are still gonna look at our options though nothing is set in stone

Love some of these names so I wanted to comment. :)

Little Ruthie or Stella are totally adorable! Your DS has awesome taste, IMO!

I love the name Hudson and know an awesome kiddo with the name. Great personality.

Our #1 boy name is Oliver, too. Incidentally, I also love the name Kennedy for a girl, but am afraid of the bad luck streak so I just can't let myself go with it. This is my own personal issue though and I really think I'm just a crazy person. I named my dog Sonny after Santino from The Godfather and he was bitten by a snake on a backpacking trip at a young age and he passed, so I'm now superstitious about naming babies after those who've died young. ETA e.g. Ophelia or Marlena (nn Marley)
