Indulge me, please...

I have a symptom question for you ladies. I usually hate reading these and mostly ignore them, but Google hasn't been able to satisfy me yet, so, sorry!

I get these singular, sharp, (sometimes painful) popping sensations in my abdomen, usually while sitting and trying to perform a lateral move or bend forward. It's exactly like a rubber band got snapped right on my stomach. Its so sharp and sudden, that I've actually yelped out loud and in public, which was pretty embarrassing. Then it's gone with zero residual soreness.

I've had round ligament pain, earlier on in this pregnancy and totally different sensation. Also, these aren't BH contractions. I'm not worried about it at all, but I am curious about where this 'symptom' goes. Probably RLP, right?

Re: Indulge me, please...

  • I have had sharp and immediate pains in my abdomen that elicit that exact response. I almost yell out because it is so sharp and sudden, then completely gone. It's rare, so although it is different from the earlier and more achy muscle feeling, I've just put it into the round ligament category.

  • I've had this "rubber band" snap pain here and there too. @CaitLewis15 Does it feel like it's more "on the surface" or deeper like RLP? Mine feels like it's more of an ab muscle twinge, it snaps and tingles for a second before disappearing completely. I'm thinking it's just my abs adapting to all the stretching, nothing bad enough to worry about, but I'll probably mention it to my midwife at my next appointment.

  • Yikes! I don't have anything like this! I have had some pain that I am assuming is my uterus stretching though! Could this be it?

Me too, I haven't had this experience, only the feeling of the lower abdomen stretching which, sometimes, prevents me from standing straight/stretching my back.
  • I've had sharp pains like that too. They are usually pretty quick, but a bit painful.
  • Thanks, @jefinley1, I think I feel good about filing it way under the RLP category also. @MommyPhoenix, it's surface-level pain, not deep down. Like in my ab muscles, not uterus. The first time this happened I was pretty sure I was about to reenact that scene from Alien, but then it was over quickly and I went on with my life. But when it does happen, it's really startling!

  • @CaitLewis15 Yup, that's where I feel it, just on the surface, happens and stops me in my tracks for a second :-O It's definitely more an ab muscle feeling for me than deeper RLP. I'll let you know what the midwife says! :)

  • @CaitLewis15 The first time I felt it, I had a bit of an irrational fear that the baby was scratching it's way out. Ha ha it was weird. Maybe the whole part in Juno where she talks about babies having nails got to me....

Ok good! I don't see my OB for another 3 weeks. I'd love to be reassured that it's something simple, like it's just my major abdominal muscles coming apart slowly. NBD. ;)

@cbolton19 yes this exactly! And I feel bad admitting that I've read this, but that part in Breaking Dawn where Renesme (wonder if that name ever popped up in the baby name board) sort of claws her way out keeps coming to mind...

  • Definately sounds like round ligament pain, it'll probably continue to get worse and worse as the pregnancy progress due to stretching and such.
  • Hmm...you might be experiencing what I have occasionally experienced since about 4 weeks ago. I actually posted about it, bit the rubber band analogy is different than what I said. What I feel usually happens when I turn over quickly in bed frpm one side to another. It may have also happened with other twisting movement. Mine is somewhat painful but mostly STARTLING. The first time it happened I thought my husband had accidentally poked me, but he wasn't even in the house! The feeling goes away as quick as it comes.

Ligaments are rubber band like, so that could be it, or maybe it could be our stomach muscles. But glad to know it's not just us, @CaitLewis15!

  • @CaitLewis15 Ha ha yes! I've read it too. I am sure that name came up. There are way too many Twihards for it not to have come up. : )
  • This has only happened to me once and it was early in my second tri while I was sleeping. It literally felt like someone kicked me straight in the gut and it woke me up and I yelped loud! I never found out what it was but some people said ligament pain although it wasn't ligament pain as I'd ever experienced. Weird
  • Funny you bring this up! I felt it for the first time yesterday afternoon and was concerned but it wasn't painful enough to freak out. I JUST got home from the doctor and read this! Apparently it's the baby and where she has decided to rest. I was explaining the pain to the doctor and she asked if I thought it was the baby and I truly didn't believe it was. But after she listened to the heartbeat she was asking where the pain was and put her fingers right on the area in question. I was surprised she found it so fast and that's because that's exactly where the baby was.
  • @kaya1111 oh wow! That's really cool. I guess she's just putting pressure on those certain areas.

I feel better knowing so many of us are in the same boat. Somehow it really helps :)

  • @CaitLewis15 with all the drama on the bump it's times like these that remind me why I'm here! Love the support everyone gives in Oct15!! Happy I could help!!
  • I've felt these pains too. I only experienced one with my first pregnancy and I thought it was baby kicking me. This pregnancy though I've had quite a few. Usually while trying to twist or lift something off to the side. This pregnancy, the first one happened in my very upper abs when baby was still below my belly button so there is no way it could have been a kick. I've just chalked it up to stretching abs and quickly forget about them beside, like you said, the pain goes away instantly. Good to know I'm not the only one, I'd be curious to hear what an OB says about it though. I have an appointment in two weeks maybe I'll ask.
