I'm swelling... Remedies?!

I am 25 weeks, live in Northern California, and we are now getting into triple digit weather. My weight has been going up & down because of water retention. I am tracking my sodium intake, don't drink much caffeine at all, drinking so much water (I pee every 10minutes it seems like) but my face, fingers, & bottoms of my feet are starting to swell. The wedding ring had to come off because by the end of the day it's too snug! Any remedies... aside from mass water consumption? ....this summer isn't going to be pleasant lol

  • Do you have a pool you can exercise in? Get the blood flowing and maybe distribute the fluid?

  • Two words: edema massage

Who cares if it really works - you're getting a massage.
  • Your doctor can prescribe you compression stockings, they suck but work for the lower half

  • How much water are you drinking?

I got two hours of sleep last night and I honestly thought that was "enema massage." Hahahaha ..oh man. That was a slightly terrifying image, but mostly I was just perplexed how a massage in that area was gonna help OP with her swelling.  :))

Anyways, OP, I read an article that suggested using an extra pillow or the like to elevate your head when sleeping to help with swelling/puffiness of the face. Like PPs have suggested, warm bath/foot soak with epsom salts, proper hydration, compression socks/tights (or even compression exercise leggings can help, obviously only in places you can be sufficiently cooled by AC), exercise for circulation, and massages - even if your SO does them. Elevating your feet can also help - just make sure they're above hip level - and avoid crossing your legs or standing too long without sitting breaks.

Someone posted on here a while back that their mother or grandmother always suggested wrapping swollen parts in cabbage leaves. I don't know how credible this source is but if you're interested:

Good luck and let us know if anything helps!

  • My 86 year old grandfathers feet and legs swell terribly bad and he uses rubbing alcohol and it works !
  • You need more salt in pregnacy, so cutting it too low while increasing water intake can make swelling worse. I'm in hot as hell plus humidity central florida and my swelling is only minor but i feel awful since the Temps have held strong. Coconut water seems to help, elevating my feet every time i feel like they are heavy and yes, the beloved epsom salts. Life saver.

If you're face and hands start swelling bring it up to your doctor!
  • I'll pass on the enema massage. No thanks.
  • Check your blood pressure! I thought mine was high so I was avoiding sodium but my MIL took and we found out it was low! I had swollen ankles because there wasn't enough pressure to push the blood back up to my heart.
  • I'm in hot as hell Phoenix and ever since it hit over 110, I have been swelling. Just my ankles really. But I've been drinking so much water during the day because it's hot and I almost had a uti a few weeks ago and it freaked me out. But my blood pressure has always been right on target if not a little low. So I can see that being why. I don't have a place to put my feet up during the day so at night I'm laying down with ice on my ankles. It's so refreshing and does help. But there's a bright side. It's only summer until the baby comes! Agh!! The baby comes right when it starts getting to live able conditions. :( pros for baby cons for mommy.
