Re: Help us choose a name!!

  • Deacon if had to pick out of the two.
  • Loading the player...
  • I've never really heard either of those names... I heard Declan but not deacon
  • Stephen Hatcher?
  • Deacon of the two.  I find Hatcher quite silly in the FN spot.

  • I agree that Deacon is better out of the two, but it makes me think of a religious clergyman which is not my first choice for a child. Do you have other candidates?
  • Is there a special meaning to either? Every time I hear Deacon I think of stodgy Protestant men making up stupid rules for women. Childhood trauma. I feel like Hatcher I could love or hate, I just really want to know if it comes from a person or if there is anything behind that choice. I like the sound of Hatcher Stephen.
  • Hatcher is not good, and I found religious titles for names at best a case of not thinking things through and at worst either super fundie religious or having no respect for others religious beliefs (and sometimes both).

    You can do better.
  • Deacon isn't that bad, but it's not a favorite. The religious reference doesn't bother me.

My mind immediately turns Hatcher into Thatcher (thanks, Shonda). Is Hatcher a family name? Or do you just like how it sounds?
  • My husband's name is Patrick Stephen.  It's one of his family traditions that the first son's middle name is the father's first name.  So my child's middle name (by tradition) should be Patrick.  Well we were out to dinner one night waiting on a table and the hostess kept calling for Hatcher and no one responded.  Finally she came up to my husband and said, "Hatcher, your table is ready."  He told her his name was Patrick, not Hatcher and she said, "ohhh, I'm sorry.  I thought you said Hatcher.  We were all talking about how cool your name was!" Ever since then my husband has been stuck on Hatcher.  He LOVES the name.  Also, it's the last name of one of his favorite hockey players.
I nixed it saying Hatcher Patrick didn't go so he needed to forget it.  Well he loves it so much, he wants to change tradition!  He said we could use his middle name, or any middle name of my choice if the baby's first name is Hatcher.
I, on the other hand, searched and searched for a name I liked with Patrick as the middle name.  I like names that are original, but not too weird.  So I came up with Deacon Patrick.  I thought it had a nice ring.
Deacon is the name of the best friend on King of Queens and the name of the star of the TV show Nashville.
My uncle is a deacon in a church and I grew up going to Catholic school my whole life, so while I surely don't want to disrespect anyone's religion, I don't associate it religiously for some reason.  I just don't think of it as a religious name.  I would never name my child Pastor, Priest, Pope.  I wouldn't even name my son Jesus.  I know that name is popular in some cultures.  Just not a name I would pick for religious reasons.  I don't know why, but Deacon just doesn't sound religious to me.

Lastly, we're open to other names.  My husband came home last night and said he likes Duke and Knox… I told him it sounded like a fight!! I don't think our baby will ever have a name!
