...& people overeat/eat an unbalanced diet because they are pregnant and gain too much weight-that is far worse for your body and baby than a very occasional glass of wine IMO.
I have had a couple of glasses during this pregnancy, but I did just read that if you have wine towards the end of pregnancy, it can actually slow down labor?? Something about the uterus being too relaxed or something. So while I was hoping maybe it would bring on labor, what I found said it did the opposite so I decided to not have one!
I have had 1-2 oz twice a week since after week 20. Only red wine though, it's actually good for you and the baby. Studies have shown that babies are born smarter and healthier, but cannot drink more than that. I worked at a vineyard for 6 years, and I feel very comfortable with this, even if my doctor isn't completely on board.
I had a Mimosa at my best friends wedding 2 weeks ago. I didn't finish it, but holy jeeze it was perfection. That's the only drink I've had in my pregnancy. Can't waiiiiiit for a cold beer though!
Definitely have had glasses of red/white wine and a beer. I've even ordered a glass with dinner when I am out at a restaurant. I don't really care what others think.
Doctors say Tylenol is ok during pregnancy, but now that is being linked to potential complications.
Doctors prescribe Zofran, but the FDA has come out saying there may exist complications with its use.
What about all the processed sugars, additives, and preservatives in the food we are eating?
I'd rather have an occasional glass of wine made from high quality, all natural ingredients than put a bunch of synthetic medications that are deemed "Ok" into my body. I did the same with my first and he is a happy, energetic, sharp, and funny little boy.
Obviously it is each to his own, but the comment of a mother being "selfish" because of choosing to drink a glass of wine is ridiculous. Enough with the name calling.

I don't love wine but I do love beer so maybe every 3 or 4 weeks I'll indulge myself and have a land shark or dos equis. I usually save these days for when I'm having a really bad day, my husband and I both think its probably safer for the baby that I try to relax and drink a beer rather than be stressed out and pissed off.
I haven't had a drink all pregnancy but I am really thinking about having one today. I haven't been sleeping and have a lot of pain and I could really use something to relax me.
I'm dying for a glass of red wine and sushi! I told my hubby that will be my 40 week celebration if she doesn't make an appearance. But so far I haven't had anything no wine or sushi.
With my first and current pregnancy, I have had a Friday and Saturday glass of wine every week. I looked forward to them every week and savored them thoroughly. I've even had *gasp* sushi on occasion with both pregnancies. Feta cheese, too.
My son was born full term, no issues and this pregnancy is shaping up the same.

The closer I get to my due date the more I crave a beer. Just one. But I did find out the connection between yeast in beer and breastfeeding so I guess it's just my body telling me I need something. I haven't had one yet, and I probably won't, but I kinda want to!
I have had a glass here and there, but honestly the heartburn is not worth it for me. HOWEVER, I have heard it could help induce labor. So, I may just go home and drink and healthy glass and then go have sexy time tonight!! Contractions, here I come!!
First came love, then came marriage - Oct 31, 09 Then came a miscarriage March '11 Then came a baby in the baby carriage May 16, 12
I too have had a few glasses of wine and sips of my husband's beers. I don't believe that a little bit of alcohol is going to do any damage. I agree with what someone else said - all the crap people put into their bodies from food is far more damaging than a little alcohol. Pesticides, hormones, genetically modified ingredients, chemicals that are absorbed through the skin - those are what we should be concerned about. I don't think alcohol in moderation is going to hurt your baby now or when you are breastfeeding.
Hubby is bringing me a bottle of red wine so I can have a glass for the first time tonight! I haven't been sleeping and was going to take a benedryl when I decided a glass of wine is much healthier Than a benedryl

I wouldn't worry about the feta one bit. Almost all cheeses sold in the U.S. are pasteurized.
I'm not opposed to a SMALL amount of alcohol, very occasionally, during later pregnancy. Women in different parts of the world do this regularly without problems. However, I do think we have major moderation issues in this country and a glass of wine here is basically never 3.5 oz. I for one really don't care too much to have a small 2oz of wine. I'm really looking forward to when I can have 3 large glasses of delicious red wine, and I do not think that is safe, at all, while pregnant. I think if you feel the affect of the alcohol at all, it's probably too much.
I was looking into the old midwife rec of having a nice glass of wine when labor begins (I mean SERIOUSLY women are routinely given narcotics and epidurals during labor, a glass of wine really can't be on that scale!). Something about having a glass of red would be so special that I thought, "hey that could really take the edge off early labor!"
But then I actually read an article explaining that alcohol should physiologically act to reduce the strength of contractions and slow down labor, which I'm not at all interested in. Apparently some dr's recommend a glass to a woman who looks like she may be starting preterm labor, to actually stop it.
Just a little food for thought! I don't know how true any of it is, but it definitely makes sense to me that it would relax your muscles and slow down labor and I don't think any of us are looking for longer labors.
@audi681 Way to take a relaxed approach in such judgy and uptight times in parenting We teach the same in our lactation department. As a rule if you're feeling the effects of alcohol your baby likely will.
I have been pregnant and/or BFing for the last 5 1/2 years straight, are you telling me you wouldn't have had a single drink for half a decade if you were me? Added to the fact that I will probably BF until about 2, so by the time I am done BFing this baby we are talking more like 7 1/2 years. I am not a huge drinker by any means, maybe one a month when not pregnant, but even for someone like me, 7 1/2 years without a drink...not going to happen!
OPer: With my first I had half a glass of champagne at a wedding. With my second 1/2 a glass of wine on our Babymoon and a Mimosa on Christmas morning. With my third I have had one glass of red wine again on our Babymoon. All after my first tri.
Um, you are my hero! That is amazing that you have been pregnant and/or breast feeding that long. I am a FTM and can only hope to have the success you seemed to have had. Not to say that formula feed baby's are in anyway bad, just that I hope to be able to breastfeed my baby!
In response to the actual post, I have had various sips of my husbands drinks, close to every time he drinks, but I have not really had my own glass or half a glass. This is mainly due to that fact that I just don't want to. But I definitely plan on drinking while breastfeeding, the classes we took indicated that as long as I am not drunk it's safe to feed the baby.
I should have realized, when posting, this would be controversial. I wish I hadn't started such a debate! After reading through everyone's posts, I don't think that a glass of wine, here or there, is wrong at all. However, I have not indulged. I've decided to wait until I can enjoy it with a whole heaping plate of pasta (GD woes).
I do plan on drinking a low alcohol beer, daily, to help with breastfeeding!
Yeah, if baby's done a cooking, why not. I only had 1/4 of hubby's glass yesterday @ 35 wks, but that's a lot more than a taste I allowed myself previously.
I can't see how an occasional glass of wine during the second and third trimester could be deemed harmful, especially considering how dismally the US eats in general. I would think processed foods and prescription meds would be far worse.
In European countries, this isn't even an issue. I would think that generation after generation of healthy pregnancies, we have enough evidence to support that drinking wine responsibly isn't a problem.

Its not that serious
A glass and a bath would probably do you some good
Feel better
