Anatomy ultrasound at 17 weeks

my anatomy scan is scheduled when I'll be exactly 17 weeks, I am somewhat worried that they won't be able to tell just yet. Has anyone else had theirs a little early and they could tell just fine??? Especially for girls? Because I know boys are a little easier to know early on!

17 weeks seems early to me. I know typically it's 18-20. Did they say why they were doing it earlier? Can you request a week or two later? Worst case scenario, they won't be able to see everything and you'll need to go back.

  • My midwife won't schedule an anatomy scan until 18-20 weeks but if your doctor is the one who said schedule it for17 weeks I wouldn't worry too much.

I'd move it just so you don't have to go twice, but that's just me :)
  • I'd move it just for my own comfort level. There is definitely too early but there's no such thing as too late to tell the sex. I'd push it back a week or two just to be sure you find out for sure!
  • I am having twins so i am having two one at 16 weeks and one at 20 weeks. The ultrasound tech at my 12 week said she will be able to tell at 16 weeks as long as the babies help us with positioning. I will have one 4 weeks later to confirm....but if you feel like you want to be sure and they have nobissues just request a week or two later
  • I'm having one at 17 weeks exactly too. My doctor does an initial anatomy scan at 16-17 weeks and then another at 20-21. Did they tell you if you're getting another one?
  • I will be almost 20 weeks 6 days when I have my anatomy scan, but that was the earliest they could get me into Maternal Fetal Medicine. They want to have a level US, due to complications from my first pregnancy. I'm just praying everything will be fine and I only have one follow-up with MFM in the third trimester. I know in theory it sounds great to have USs every two weeks, but I couldn't sleep the night before each one. I was too worried that they might find something wrong or his growth would stop completely. It was stressful, even though the docs and techs were amazing!
  • The place that I'm going does them between 18 and 22 weeks.

  • I'm having a boy but it was clear as day during my u/s at 15w 5d

I had a 2nd u/s at 16w 1d and my little guy was not cooperating and was all curled up so it was very hard to see "those regions" on the u/s! The tech had me lay on my side for 5 min and then he stretched out a bit.

I think if you want to be 100% sure they can see it, I would wait until 20 weeks when they generally do the scan!
  • Im 16.1 weeks and I just had an ultrasound done today that was in conjunction with genetic blood testing. The Dr. said they could see a lot, mainly because I'm relatively thin, but it will be much easier to see things on the 20 week anatomy scan. They were particularly looking at the heart and she said at 16 weeks, the heart is about the size of a pencil eraser, so it's difficult to check the structure and make sure the arteries are correctly developing.

17 weeks might still be pretty small, but it depends on the skill of the person performing and interpreting the ultrasound.
