Baby Names

Elsa?

Not even pregnant right now, but DH and I love to discuss names for future children (okay I love it, he humors me...) We love family names and DD is Charlotte after my mother. We have considered Elsa if we have another girl because it's DH's grandmother's name, but do you think it will become super popular because of Frozen? We already have to deal with the fact that Will and Kate just made DD's name jump in popularity!

Re: Elsa?

  • Okay. So.

Stop blaming Will and Kate for Charlotte being popular. The name was 11 in 2013, and is currently ranked 10. Here's the rankings since 2000.

Yes, it definitely jumped in popularity since the release of Frozen, but it was on the uptick to begin with.

I think since you aren't actually pregnant now chances are Frozen could be a past thought by the time you do have another. And with it being a family name, I think it's great
  • Elsa is lovely and I would not care about the association because it's not a negative one.
  • Thanks for all the quick replies!

@wassuphoes - I know, I know. Charlotte was definitely already too popular for my liking, but I always knew I would use it because my mom still goes by a completely unrelated childhood nickname (Sam) and I love the name :)

I will definitely be keeping Elsa on the short list, especially since this is just a hypothetical baby we are naming!

  • With recent talk of frozen 2 (no release date has been given yet) i feel like it might jump even more than it has already. But at the same time, it could not. I'd wait and see how the timing of things works out.
But I like that it's a family name and you want to use it for that reason.
  • Team @wassuphoes I agree completely.

  • I would give this name a few years to emerge from the shadow of Frozen, honestly.

  • I would middle name it.

    I really like Elsa.
  • I like Elsa. Before Frozen, it made me think of Ilsa from Casablanca. I like Ingrid Bergman's Ilsa better than Disney's Elsa.

Fun, pointless fact about Frozen: the original story was written by Hans Christian Anderson. The movie's main characters are Hans, Kristof, Anna, and Sven. And it was intentional, to honor him.

  • What about Elise, Eloise,Eliza. Similar but without connotations
  • I would give this name a few years to emerge from the shadow of Frozen, honestly.

This. I think you should wait a few years for the Frozen craze to calm down. Or middle name it.
  • I could never do this. I work with preschoolers and somehow know all the words to Let It Go even though I've only seen the movie once. I also say give it a few years.

  • I think it's a pretty name. I originally thought no but the more I think about it I say go for it! Frozen will die out at some point.
  • It's really unfortunate but if you give her that name you're going to have to spend the rest of your life explaining how, no, you didn't name her after the movie.

We had to let go of a name we liked for the same reason.
  • Regardless of Frozen, Elsa is not a particularly flattering name to me. If you're stuck on it and have a family connection I'd maybe MN it. Also, no amount of time is going to make the Disney connection go away entirely - Jasmine, Belle, Ariel - none of those were probably as popular but I'd immediately think of the characters.

I know of four Jasmines under the age of 3. I'm in London - I think Jasmine is about to have a UK moment
