2nd Trimester

Need help determining if I should quit job ((because of the heat))

I have yet to talk to my OB, but I just got a job which requires me to walk door to door. The problem is, where I live the weather is getting super hot, up to 115. I do drink a ton of water, like 6 bottles while I'm out but from reading around I need to be cautious, so should I just go ahead and not risk it? This is my first pregnancy, so I need everything to go smooth! Think I just got the job at a really unfortunate time, I just need reassurance that quitting would be the best option....I'm 13 weeks. Thank you moms!

Lots actually most women work their whole pregnancy. Lots of women have pretty hectic and physical jobs. Being in the heat isn't a sole reason to quit. As long as you are resting and staying hydrated you should be fine. Quiting doesn't seem like a best option In most situations because most people need income. It sounds like you want to quit and just want people to tell you it's ok?? Can you afford to quit? Do you need the income? What does your SO say about it?

  • No I agree with the above and don't think you need to quit your job.
  • No, I love my job, I just really want to make sure that being outside 6 hours is okay, thank you! It's my first so I'm just nervous about everything going well :)

Yes being outdoors is fine. If you start to feel too hot or feel faint, take a break and make sure you are drinking plenty of fluids.  I would suggest getting a pregnancy book.  I would avoid What to Expect because it tends to be a little more alarmist.  THe Mayo Clinic Guide to Pregnancy is pretty good.

  • 115 for six hours sounds extreme to me. It also kinda sounds like maybe you think you should quit. You can still find another job (perhaps indoors) before you start showing. Follow your gut. I say quit. Leave that extreme heat for someone not trying to support a life for the first time.
  • Whatever you do, do it bc that's what YOU want to do. Don't worry about what others would think. If you can still get by financially and want to quit, then quit. Live for you and your family, don't worry about seeking approval elsewhere.

Best of luck whatever you decide!

None of us are medical professionals. Perhaps you should consult a professional - say, your doctor, before making such a huge decision.

Just as a point of reference, quitting a job doesn't just mean lost income. It means lost retirement and possibly insurance benefits, stagnation in the workplace, missing out on promotion opportunities (and the raises/bonuses associated thereof)... so yeah, quitting a job is much, much more than just about a paycheck.

  • I'm not necessarily saying you should quit now, but walking door to door is going to get EXTREMELY uncomfortable as you get later in to your pregnancy. If you're going to have to quit eventually, you might just want to start looking for something else now before it gets to the point where you have to quit with no back up job, for the reasons the poster above mentioned.

  • Talked to my boss today, and she suggested another job, just for the safety of me and the baby. She was very understanding and offered for me to return when it wasn't as strenuous; also talked to OB and she mentioned it wasn't a great idea either. Thank you ALL for the advice and support :)
  • Also starting to look for back up job, so I don't leave until I find one
