Umbilical cord bleeding

hi ladies. So DS will be two weeks old on Tuesday. His cord fell off Monday. It was looking fine. But tonight as I was changing his diaper I noticed blood on his onsie. His belly button/cord is bleeding. Should I be concerned about this? I thought maybe I need to clean it with alcohol but should I call the pediatrician Monday?

Re: Umbilical cord bleeding

  • Same happened with DD2. I would clean it with q tip dipped in rubbing alcohol and let air dry. Our doc
Said it was normal. It probably fell off when there was still a small 'live' part between the stump and belly. No biggie.
  • Also, just food for thought... Here in the US people make a HUGE deal about 1. No bath before stump falls off 2. No cleaning it with anything.
Well when we lived in Switzerland and DD1 was born, we were told baths were totally OK anytime and to clean around the stump with qtip dipped in alcohol. We did that and DD1 turned out totally fine. With baby 2 we did it the american way and she's fine too. No one absolute way of doing anything baby related....

  • That's what I was thinking too. Thanks! I had our two older kids at a different hospital. And I remember them telling me to clean it with alcohol. This time at a different hospital they said to leave it alone. They did say just sponge bathing. So I was sponge bathing every couple of days. He hates it. He hates diaper changes too.

I'll just clean it and watch it. I'm assuming the only concern is infection. He had his first drs appt Monday and all he said was if it atAys goopy or oozy to bring him back. I do think it fell off kind of prematurely. It started to get loose and then got stuck on his onsie and pulled off. But he didn't seem bothered by it. He never cried and it looked pretty normal to me so I didn't worry about it

  • With our last (DD4) they didn't remove the clamp. So 3 days later at the doctor's visit he did. Her cord fell off 2 days after that. And yeah it bled a little. The hospital didn't say to clean it or anything so I assumed the new practice with babies is no cleaning. But my doctor said yes. Lol I just assumed things have changed in 7yrs since our last baby.

  • My son's bled a tiny bit for about a day. Some of the dried blood got into his diaper and freaked me out temporarily. We didn't do anything with it and it's now totally fine and completely healed.
