Marijuana and pregnancy

Re: Marijuana and pregnancy

  • This is a joke right? You post about marijuana (a mostly illegal substance) during pregnancy on a board full of pregnant women who want to do what's best for their child and yet you honestly think you can control the responses you get by requesting only like-minded individuals comment? That isnt how the internet works, especially when it comes to controversial topics. Im not a pot smoker. Never have been and never will be but not because im against it. I just never have. I also live in a state where it is legal, have many friends who smoke regularly, have friends who use it medicinally for their infant child, as well as older family members who also use medicinally...but ill refrain from commenting because, well, im not a smoker and therefore not "like-minded" (whatever that means) and dont want to go against your wishes...even though what i have to say might be useful. My bad.
Take a look around the various boards. It amazes me how many women are okay with using it during pregnancy. Keep in mind, I am very much for the legalization, but I just can't see any benefit from using it while pregnant. There are plenty of other ways to treat MS.

  • I stopped when I found out I was pregnant only because sometimes I get paranoid when I smoke, just a little, but not a feeling I need now that I am pregnant, ha ha ha!

I honestly think it is fine, both my mother and mother in law smoked (reasonably) when they were pregnant and my husband and I came out healthy:) everything in moderation:)
  • @CMDD I am also in the medical field and I didn't say either way. I said that there is not evidence of it being more harmful than the other stuff we DO use. And that people need to make their OWN decisions and be supported for them

I was an occasional smoker prior to finding out. Here in florida theyvdrug test you without telling you. So i quit the day i found out. This was march 26th. I went for my first appt april 13th and popped positive. Child services was called. I am testing it out of my system here at home. I still pop pos and swear to all that is holy i have NOT smoked since march 26th!!!! I habe til 28weeks to pee clean or i lose my kids. I hate this!!! I never smoke whhen i am pg. I don't even drink caffeine. I don't smoke cigarettes and rarely have i drank alcohol in my life. And now i face losing my kids over weed i smoked months ago. It metabolizes in the fat and since i am obese i guess i am screwed. I wish they would legalize it already because i smoked for my ptsd as the pills i was on made me a Zombie :(
I'm sorry you're going through that, that sounds really scary. So you were smoking pot with your children in the home, but not while pregnant? 28 weeks seems like a long way away, hopefully it flushes out by then!
  • @BlueWaffleSpeshul I didn't say that we all had to agree. We all have different opinions. But when it's bashing someone because of their opinion, that's not supportive She got chewed out for asking us to refrain from being negative esp if you've never smoked. That's not ok.

The point is that it is impossible to dictate the responses you receive on a public forum. You can ask for everyone to be positive, but it will never happen, and then being angry or annoyed  because people didn't stick to your "rules" (not saying the OP was either, this is a generalization) is just silly. This is obviously a hot button topic and I would think anyone posting it would understand that they are likely to get at least one heated response.

i'm with you on people making their own decision. but i dont believe we have to support them.

No we don't. But we don't have to turn into "that person" who bashes them either.

I smoked before I knew but stopped when I found out. I figured that it was easy enough to stop especially as I was in the process of quitting cigarettes which I found much harder and I didn't want to be still smoking both. After going from a pack a day before I knew immediately to two a day I've totally quit and now that I'm smoke free I'm not interested in smoking weed while pregnant or around my child when they arrive. There isn't enough rresearch for me to feel comfortable doing it. Additionally my boyfriend and I are not allowing smoking of any kind in our house nor will we be allowing our child to be in the company of anyone smoking unless they are outside (bf's grandparents who live upstairs smoke weed).
  • @CMDD not at all saying you are "that person" by any means. I just see another mom asking a question and getting cut down because of it and that hurts me FOR them. People in my life make choices I completely disagree with but I still love them and am here for them as I can be.

Nope. Never smoked around my kids. My ex and i have shared custody. I only smoked when they were with him. And not in my house either. I am all for legalizing it. Alcohol does far more damage than any amount of weed. But i have never even as much gotten a traffic violation in my life. I don't allow any smoke of any kids in my home or around my kids. I felt though, after a ton of research that smoking a couple days a week would help better with my ptsd than taking 8 pills a day that made it difficult for me to function. I know the drs here test you...but i didn't know it was so early in pg. This is my ninth baby and i have not smoked weed since i was like 15. The one time i smoked lol
Anyway i told my dr straight up i smoked the day before i found out and the moment i found out haven't touched it. I do know many women who smoked through pg. I just feel when you are pregnant..it is no longer just YOUR body. Now you share your body with another life. So even if it were legal i would not smoke through pg. Anyway, i test once a week. Still freaking pos. Feeaks me out.
  • From what I have read and just general knowledge (Atleast what I would consider general knowledge), smoking anything while pregnant is not ok. I am totally fine with weed in general, I have never tried it nor do I have any desire to. However, I don't care if other people do it. You ladies can think and do what you way because at the end of the day these are your babies, however, I am going to put my "2 cents" in that I don't agree with smoking ANYTHING, not just weed, while pregnant.

There were no rules when I posted this. I wanted to create a space/forum for moms that smoked/smoke; feedback on their decision to continue or quit. I have limited friends who are pregnant or have kids which doesn't allow me to have a discussion with them in real life.
I wasn't asking for popular opinion or to make it a debate; controlling the Internet or whatever. I just wanted to speak to other mamas in my same boat.
I understand that everyone will have their own opinion on this topic as it is indeed a very hot one but again, that wasn't what the post was about.
The gifs poking fun at stoners - snoop dog and Ted are a bit snarky. Don't trust me I do drugs. He is also a make believe teddy bear so yeaaah.

I was making a joke. If we need to clarify, I used to smoke every single day (when I was young.) However, if you don't want funny gifs posted on your marijuana thread then I don't know what to tell you. If you make a post and you directed toward smokers, you're going to get smokers responses. How do you think I know that Ted the teddy bear smoked pot? Because I'm oblivious? No, it was a joke. And it wasn't directed towards you. And I truly apologize if you took offense towards it. It was not a personal attack. I don't believe it Snark is disallowed on the bump. I also do not believe that smoking pot while pregnant is in the best interest of the baby. It's similar to a cigarette and it's effects of reducing down your oxygenation rate and when you get less oxygen baby gets less oxygen. But then again, you were not asking for my opinion because I am not a smoker anymore. So that's why I didn't give it to you.

@enigmaanjel I believe you that you have not smoked, however THC can take up to three months to leave your system. The only thing that I noticed speed up the process is goldenseal root, however I have no idea if you can take a pregnant and I would not recommend doing so without your ob's advise. Plus, if you have MS it will just make it worse. I think that if you only smoke occasionally you should be good by your next appointment. There's no way to know though except to buy an at-home drug test.
  • @enigmaanjel - no guarantee that it will work, but start putting lemon in your water. It helps the liver with cleansing. I drank tons of lemon water to get depo provera out of my system.

  • I think there are a lot of negative connotations of weed in general and many jump to conclusions just because it's not socially acceptable. They automatically think it's a drug, so there for extremely harmful and is equated to cocaine. I can  say I think of it as a medicine and when used in edible form is great for morning sickness and other ailments. I wouldn't smoke it while pregnant and probably wouldn't use it for funsies while pregnant but i believe it can have it's place. It's just interesting to me that pregnant women will drink pop, eat crap fast food, not work out, are ok with taking other pharmaceuticals but omg don't even think about touching the cannabis oil!

I love lemon water. And from what i read it can take up to 67 days for an obese person. I still have rwo weeks til next appt. I know she said week 28 but she tested me witjout telling me to begin with so who knows if she pops me again. I have two kinds of at home teats one for 50 ng and one for 20 ng.
  • I haven't been smoking but having the option of edibles has been nice because I can't sleep and feel nauseous all the time. I know it's taboo but I feel better doing that than if I took medication. I read this article about studies Jamaican mommas and their children. Very interesting! norml.org/about/item/breathe-push-puff-pot-use-and-pregnancy-a-review-of-the-literature
  • Never thought of edibles to be honest. :-? But definitely worth looking into for morning sickness remedy.
  • @shellseamarie I LOVE that article!
  • @enigmanjel here's a pregnacy solution: drink pickle juice! I have no idea how or why and it could be a myth but a lot of smokers I know swear by it. Also, it's actually pretty yum.

  • From another board. I'm from Canada as well.. I've never really smoked weed, unless I was out drinking and such.... I wouldn't drink or smoke cigarettes or marijuana while pregnant. I wouldn't risk the health of my child, there's enough problems out of our control that could go wrong and if we can prevent some; or help with preventing some then I'll do it. However... I have friends who smoked marijuana, cigarettes and drank while pregnant and all have healthy babies. But it just isn't for me.

Way to go! I'm sure this wasn't easy and I'm proud of you both!
  • Oh this is beautiful. @BostonBaby1 you're my hero. And I hate you bc now I want popcorn. Two posts in a row.

I do wonder the pros/cons of medicinal versus Diclegis or Zol-whatever. More studies are needed, but it's a moral issue to study the effects of weed on an unborn fetus, so...

I am not officially saying I'm a toker. I will say I haven't toked since that little pink line showed up. Ten minutes before? I cannot confirm nor deny.

I also cannot confirm nor deny that I miss it more than my wine. Every. Single. Nauseated. Day.

    Thank you!!! ❤️❤️❤️

Since I'm not a smoker my opinion probably isn't wanted here but I'll say it anyway. I have nothing against marihuana, I've never tried it in my life and don't really want to but I think to each it's own, if you're into it, great.

I will say that just because you know people who smoked or drank while pregnant and had a healthy baby does not make it safe to use. Bodies react differently when exposed to substances.

Tobacco is responsible for 80-90% of certain lung cancers, does every smoker develop lung cancer? No, there are people who smoked their entire life and died of old age, doesn't make cigarette smoking any less responsible for thousands of deaths and other complications.

As many have said, there are sooo many things that could go wrong that are out of our control, why would you wanna add something potentially hazardous to the mix? Why risk it? It's not worth it. It's not your body anymore, it's the baby's as well.

I'm pretty surprised that nearly everyone said they wouldn't use marijuana when pregnant (which isn't always in the form of smoke) but on another thread nearly everyone said they'd have a glass of wine or so while pregnant. Is this because Drs say it's "ok" to have wine? But they haven't said its ok to have marijuana because it's not as mainstream. Are there studies that show drinking alcohol doesn't cause issues in unborn children?
I know that regularly drinking alcohol can cause severe issues in the unborn baby so I don't see how one glass would be worth it.

Note: As previously stated I would not use weed while pregnant...nor would I drink alcohol.

Yes, there are studies into alcohol consumption during pregnancy.

I quit smoking when I found out I was pregnant, however, a vaporizer is great, especially for the people that are saying anything about blood oxygen levels. I understand how awful morning sickness can be and completely get why someone would use marijuana as an aid. Also, it's very true that there are not enough studies to show what the effects are on an unborn child. You can't always believe every "study" on the Internet, and it seems as though some people are quick to believe everything they read. Not trying to sound snarky. Once more states legalize marijuana I think it will help with the stigma being taken away from it, and I think the idea of the tea for morning sickness is a great idea!

I'm surprised the subject of edibles hasn't come up more in this conversation. I was a daily pot smoker for about 8 years. Smoked pot everyday and I am a responsible adult with a great job and masters degree. I haven't smoked since I found out I was pregnant but I have thought about edibles. I have a good friend who is pregnant and she smokes one bowl once a month but I just don't want to put any smoke into my body. I don't feel comfortable asking my dr about edibles as I live in a state where marijuana is illegal. Anyone live somewhere where it is legal and have any experience with using edibles or heard any Drs a opinions on it. Quitting was easy for me to do and I can very happily not smoke...but a nice pot brownie would be a nice way to relax every once in a while...

@MillyDally People see marijuana as a drug because people in general use it for recreational purposes not as a medicinal drug. Reading through this thread most of the ones wanting to smoke or eat it want to do it because they miss the high and relaxed feeling, not medicinal use.
