Thoughts on birth: Pitocin, Epidural, c-section, Home birth?

Re: Thoughts on birth: Pitocin, Epidural, c-section, Home birth?

  • This time around I have a midwife and will be doing a hydro birth at a hospital (so just laboring in the water and getting out to push, to reduce the chance of infections) - I plan to do everything as naturally as possible, I don't want to be hooked up to any machines or iv's (we will see if my body allows for my plan to stick!)
This sounds excellent. Hydro birth at the hospital?? I didn't know you could do that? What hospital is this? Not in NYC I would assume?

We are in Texas and I was lucky to find that my military hospital had birthing tubs brought in a few years ago, only they just changed their policy to only allow laboring to take place in them.

My hospital has laboring tubs also. I'm in WV. I never got the chance to use them last time, maybe this time.

Assuming that my baby decides to stay head down and we have no complications, I will be delivering at a free standing birth center with a nurse - midwife. I won't have the option for an epidural at the birth center. My goal is to at least labor in the tub for a while because water is very relaxing to me
Same Here!  Hoping for vertex babies and uncomplicated births for both of us!  :)

FTM. My plan is to labor naturally, making use of the tub and/or shower in my room. I'm delivering at a birthing center at my hospital, with an OB/GYN.

I want to avoid an epidural, mostly because the idea of being stuck in the bed freaks me out. I may or may not want to get up and move around a lot, but as soon as I CAN'T move around, I know I'm going to want to. I'm totally comfortable changing my mind in the moment, though, if I need it.
  • On this side of pond things happen a little bit different. Usually everybody get professional midwife and if you want you can hire doula. You get induced only if labor isn't progressing naturally and at least in Norway they use oxytocin not pitocin. I've done some research on pit and usually it means more pain, more tearing and more often baby is going into distress which leads to (unnecessary) c-section. Do you know that in US suddenly most of births happen from Monday to Friday.? All days should have more or less the same percentage but on weekends it's very low. Also c-section rates here are a lot lower. My only birth plan is to "go with the flow" and see what kind of options we can take at any point of labor/giving birth. There is even possibility for me to control the flow of epidural and hospitals research is showing that if you have control over that you tend to use a lot smaller dosage than doctor would give in one shot.

This is my 3rd child.. My first was with midwives, all natural, overdue, no pain mess but induced with cervidel and pitocin. And just my experience I will never ever go with a midwife ever again!! I got pre eclampsia and had 7 different midwives.. So they nearly killed me because no one knew what was going on between the 7 of them and neither knew how to communicate. I had one who caught it, after I had gained 60 pounds, bp was 170s.. But the supervising doctor refused to intervene... And then the midwife who was supposed to be there during my labor, never showed up until the nurse was delivering her.. She got stuck and the midwife didn't do anything.. The nurse called in another nurse and they physically pushed her out. Then I hemoragged, and the dumb midwife panicked.. The nurse jumped in and gave me pitocin. Then yet again the midwife failed when she realized I had a level 4 tear.. She looked at the nurse and I quote said "I. Can't fix this" and walked out!!! I loved my nurse. That's just my experience with midwives and I know not all are that incompetent.. That's just my reason for never wanting one again.
My second, was an ob. And he was very uninformed.. His pa saw me most the time.. And she didn't relay anything I said to him.. But he wasn't bad.. And he decided at the end, that because I had a lv4 that he was going to do a. Section. (As she had never told him my medical history.. I had mentioned it while in the hospital because I had pre eclampsia again)
This time (my 3rd and last) I have a wonderful doctor. She is very up to date on everything. Had gotten all my history from previous doctors and studied everything. She's a high risk ob. And thank god at almost 34 weeks I am doing great! No sign of pre e. I'm just praying that all this continues and she don't mess up on the c section. Lol

It's okay. God kept us safe. She was perfectly healthy. So I can't complain. I had an amazing nurse. I learned something very important that day. I can trust nurses to take care of me after all! (Not that I didn't think they couldn't I just didn't have much experience with hospitals and nurses and serious sicknesses.. So I kind of thought they were the middle man.
  • A L&D nurse once told me if you went drug-free after you had the baby if they laid he/she on your stomach it could crawl to find your boob to nurse. I thought that was really interesting and if I end up going too quick and not get an epidural I would like to experience that. But...baby's head is measuring 2+ weeks ahead and she's going to be a whopper. Thank you husband of mine for jinxing my baby! Lol
  • We are using a midwife in the hospital. As I am a FTM I have no previous experience with labor so our plan is to go with the flow. The hospital has a tub room which I am hoping to take full advantage of. My midwife said I can go in any time but they recommend using the tub during transition. It is for this reason I am hoping to avoid any medication that would bound me to a bed but if I end up not being able to take the pain I am not above using some medication to alleviate that pain. Like I said, go with the flow birth plan.

Good luck to all you mommies on whatever plan you decide to go with, every birth story is amazing and every birth, although not the same, is a miricle in it's own right!
  • Yeah, we are measuring big and have been the whole time. My husband and I are pretty tall people so I do not expect a peanut here....

Due in August but will be delivering in July due to placenta previa (unless by some less than 3% chance it moves still). Third time mom, first 2 were in the hospital with a midwife with no epidurals. First was sunny side up and 3 hours of pushing but all in all not so bad. Second was really a pretty easy labor and delivery - both went fast from 5-6cm to pushing so really didn't feel the need for the epidural. Second kid was 10lbs5oz too and really no issues because of that. Really bummed to need a c-section this time, but what can you do?? If the placenta DOES move I'll do another hospital birth with a midwife again.

Yeah totally understand. I had a partial placenta previa at 23 weeks but luckily it moved up. It sucks to have to get a c-section but you can think of it like this- there is nothing else you could do or could have done to change that. They don't really have any other choice but to do surgery. I hope you have a quick and easy recovery.
  • I'm having my OB deliver... She will also be my baby's doctor since she is a family practitioner. I plan on having a VBAC and trying without an epidural but I'm not against it if the pain gets to be too much. I think I'm more nervous for this delivery than my first! I don't have a strict birth plan as I learned with my first that things happen that are out of our control and its best to roll with what you're given!

Hospital delivery with my OB and epidural. I do want to labor at home as long as possible, and as soon as we get to the hospital, my dr said they'll get the epidural started. I just hope everything goes well. Not planning on a c section, or being induced. But, if it's necessary, then I'll do it. I just want all of us to be healthy.
  • I will most likely end up with pitocin for inducing, but it's medical not by choice. Getting induced next week though at 37 weeks for IUGR. In regards to an epidural, I don't plan on having one. Even before pregnancy I didn't use medicine for much. I also don't think an epidural would work on me, just a gut feeling. I have read that it is in a similar category as Novocain (like a dentist uses) and that does nothing for me with dental work. I just clench my fists and deal with it. I don't think it's a bad thing for anyone to get it though, just a personal choice! I think the only thing I am going to be frustrated with is being strapped to a machine the whole time for continuous monitoring!! No tubs, birthing balls, or walking for me...just my left side and a catheter...Wish me luck with that!!!
  • I may be induced.  The mixed reviews on inductions (in this thread) have me concerned. Some women say that the pitocin caused them to have super long and painful labor, but others have said that the labor went super quick. I am really hoping not to end up in a C Section.

My sister delivered both children in less than 3 hours in week 38. There was no time for an epidural for either. My mother also delivered my sister and I under 4 hours. Do you think that there is a trend there? Should I assume that I will deliver like the women in my family? I hope so! I would like to deliver in week 38 to avoid induction, and I would also love to go quick!

I would definitely not assume that you will deliver like your family members. I have a really big family and all the girls had different delivery experiences, including my mother. I would say just go with the flow.
  • ^ agree. You shouldn't assume that your labor will be the same like your mothers or sisters.

With me my mum was in labor for maybe 5 hours from start to time I was born, and she said "ohh it was like lying eggs quick and easy" (thanks mom :-? )

My mom had me in six hours and my brother in four. I know in my head that my experience will probably be different, but I'm hoping so hard that it isn't!

I have 6 children going on 7 all natural no epidural. I am scared of them lol but I totally understand when one gets it I think they are brave to even accept it. I say just try To go with a plan but don't be totally off just in case everyone is different and always be open I think it's just pretty much what your body will tell you and then your accepting what it tells you. Good luck
  • Oh man, I am feeling so heavy. I really wish I could just get into my bathing suit and float in the pool or something....That laboring in a bath sounds really excellent. Damn it. We will have to try that way next time I guess.
