Frustrated.....Reagan help

So we seem to have circled back around to Reagan. I don't love it, but I like it. I like that it's not super popular, but don't like that it feels masculine. Hubby loves it. I especially don't want her called ree-gan. Here's the bigger issue....I don't want Reagan, after the president. He wants Raegan. I personally think that'll get auto-corrected everything it's typed, and it looks like a misspelling. I wanted Rehgan to look a little more feminine and to help with pronunciation, but don't want it to look made up. So, we compromised and dropped the a and the h and decided on Regan, like Megan. With that said, I still wasn't sold, so we've tried everything under the sun, and besides Sophie, which is sooo popular, we haven't agreed on anything else. So we have circled back around.....

Which do you like?
Raegan Denise
Rehgan Denise
Regan Denise
Or
Sophie Jean

(My mother's name is Denise Jean)

Re: Frustrated.....Reagan help

  • Not a fan of Reagan. If you're not sold on it, then don't do it! Out of your selections, I like Sophie Jean the best.

  • I think if you have to try multiple spellings of something to make it work, it's time to drop it and move on.

    Sophie Jean.

I agree, that's why I dropped it. But we just can't agree on anything else besides the ever-so-popular Sophie.
  • I like Denise, Sophie and Jean.  Raegan, Reagan and whatever spelling you can come up with are bad.  Honestly.  The trend of it is very trendy. Surname, president (and it's not like it's great), masculine on female etc.

I agree, that's why we were just going to keep it simple and do Regan, like Megan, but I feel like people will call her Reegan?! And yes, I agree, masculine.

Is it more trendy than Sophie? Or is Sophie just considered classic?!
  • Sophia/Sofie/Sofia are classic vs trendy.  Hearing those names you could be referring to a 9 month old, 9 year old or 90 year old and be right.

    Have you tried nymbler.com?

You can type in names you like, ones your DH likes and it might spark some new ideas for you.  You probably will want to reference behindthename to check since sometimes they do throw some doozies in there but maybe it would give you some ideas.

Thanks! I'll try anything at this point! Lol
  • I really think Reagan by any spelling is too trendy and masculine/surname-y. Sophie, while popular, is light years better. I agree with the above suggestion of Nymbler. Also, Nameberry has a similar feature you might want to try. Just double check any name suggestions and spellings against Behind the Name. Good luck!
  • I've tried nameberry! I have tried every name that ever was!!!! You'd think it'd be easier for two people to agree on one name! If I had it my way, she'd be named Clara Jean! So I guess it's looking like Sophie, which I love, but with our common last name, there's got to be a million! Lol
  • Regan (that spelling) is one of the ungrateful daughters in King Lear. That's my very first association every time I see any version of this name. She tricks her father into giving up his kingdom, and then won't take him in. She turns him out into a storm. Makes the name very negative for me.

Regarding Sophie/Sofie/Sofia they are popular. But there is a difference between popular and trendy. Sophie is a classic name that is popular. Jazmyne is trendy. Plus popular today = far less people than popular 50 years ago.
  • I think I'd be more inclined to say it like ray-gan with the 'ae' spelling. I'm not a big fan of the name though, so I'd suggest Sophie or Denise or one of the other names for the FN
  • I love the advice that if you're trying several different spellings to make a name work, just drop the name.  I also agree with pp that if you don't love the name, keep looking.  You may feel like you've seen every name out there, but I'm sure that there are tons of names that you have yet to consider.  Here are a few for you based off of what you've given in your post:

    Anne
    Carine
    Darcy
    Faith
    Jacqueline
    Jeanette
    Joan
    Kennedy
    Laura
    Margot
    Mary
    Morgana
    Sloane

Jean as the first name or Sophia Jean.
    Naf of Reagan or Sophie.

Sophie Jean is the best of your choices. Reagan is the only spelling that looks right. Raegan and Rehgan are terrible.

  • I really don't want you to settle when naming your daughter. Sophie Jean is the best of what you have here. Try the tools that were suggested and see if anything else comes up.

  • I don't care how popular Sophie/Sophia are, it is much better than any spelling of Reagan, but if you do choose Reagan, spell it as such.

  • I vote for spellings Regan or Reagan. The others just look made up to me, and your kid will be correcting customer service reps on the phone her entire life, and all her paperwork will have the name spelled wrong.

I also love Sophie. But I agree with PP sounds like you might need to keep looking if you guys still are not on the same page.

My neice Reghan. None of your spellings but that same pronunciation.
  • Thanks for everyone's input.....maybe we'll keep working on it...:-/
  • Sophie Jean.
  • The power of Christ compels you to choose another name.

Sorry, but if you go with Regan, gear up for a lifetime of that joke. It's not a bad name. But it needs an exorcism.
  • How do you figure that Reagan is not that popular? It's super trendy! Honestly, I think all of your proposed spellings are terrible. Please move on. Reagan will be time stamped.

I absolutely love your first choice of Clara Jean! Wish your hubby was on board. Sophie is very nice, but even more popular than Reagan! I realize that Sophia is the #1 name, but let's not kid ourselves... Sophie is a half step from Sophia, and probably every Sophia's nickname, so in my eyes it's just as popular.

Also, Reagan and Sophie are light years apart in style... Seriously, you guys need to keep searching because neither of these are the one. Good luck.

  • Love the previous suggestion of Darcy Jean. I came back to give a few suggestions, with Darcy on my list, and saw that someone else had already mentioned it. I feel it may be a good compromise of your differing styles.

    Also consider...

    Demetria Jean (nn Demi)
    Dinah Jean

    Cora Jean
    Maura Jean or Mary Jean
    Keira Jean

I completely agree! I like Clara, Eleanor, Brooke, Eliza, etc; Reagan was all my husbands idea, along with Hailey! Wth?! He did mention Sophie, which I love but too popular, but like you said, as I look up all spellings of Reagan ie Raegan, it's right there too!

    Edited:
Oh, and Genevieve(Ginny) I really like too!
  • Oh husbands. My man heard Xanthippe on Unbreakable Kimmy Schmitt and was convinced that was THE name. No. No. No. I told him we can name our next dog Xanthippe as compromise and he actually agreed. God love him.

  • @DogLoverX3 and @MixedBerries88, Husbands are funny. While mine tends to have the same tastes as I in the majority of things, including names, he still threw out a few suggestions that confused me... Melody and Jennifer? Both nice names but just too dated for my taste. We grew up with all the Melodys, Jennifers, and Harmonys, etc. So all I think of is 80's.
