6 week 2 day ultrasound...is it too early??

About 2 years ago, I lost twin baby girls at around 12weeks due to a chromosomal issue with just one of my little ones. Ever since, my husband and I have been TTC and this past week we discovered we're expecting again. According to my due date..I'm 6 weeks and 2 days pregnant and during my first appointment today, my doctor ordered an ultrasound for fetal age and fetal survey. My question is..isn't 6 weeks to early to see anything?? I'm pretty nervous about it..because all I can remember is the last ultrasound that ended in the loss of my sweet baby girls. If they don't see my baby or hear him/her I'll be so nervous the entire time until I get another ultrasound...

Some of my friends told me that it's odd for them to do an ultrasound so early..is this true?? With the twins..my first ultrasound wasn't until 8 weeks..thanks for any advice in advance!!

  • No. Earlier ultrasound measurements are the most accurate.

We had an ultrasound 6w2d last week. We saw the gestational sac, embryo (I took the technician's word for it, so small), yolk sac, and a flickering heartbeat. You will definitely see something! Good luck!

  • My profile photo is actually a 6 week scan. You can definitely see our little nugget in there.

I experienced an earlier loss last time and this time my doctor had me do hcg repeats one week and at exactly 6w0d I had the first u/s. We saw the sac and the early formation which looked perfect. I go back at 8w1d for another so I can be more at ease.

Hang in there and know that they want the best for us and our new fetus'!
  • This is actually my 6w1d sono. It says 14w due to me not having regular periods. We heard the heart beat. Good luck!
  • I am jealous. Doc put the request in last week (5week) I received my appointment letter today. Last week of Aug... 20 weeks... my first is at 20 weeks.....
  • It's normal to have an early ultrasound if you have a history of loss. You won't see a "baby" at 6 weeks, but your doctor will be able to clinically confirm your pregnancy and can tell if you're measuring as far along as you're supposed to be. Don't worry if there's isn't a heart beat right at 6 weeks; your doctor will be able to tell you if it looks like you're progressing normally.

I have a couple friends who miscarried and with their next pregnancy the doctor did 6 week ultrasounds. They were able to hear/see the heartbeat, take measurements, and estimate due date. I think the earlier the ultrasound the more accurate the measurements are as far as gestational age.
